To end WWII, Japan🇯🇵 had to surrender unconditionally and had to agree that Manchuria, Taiwan and all the islands/reefs/isles (in the Taiwan Strait and in the South China Sea) had to be returned back to China (at that time, in 1945 , China was officially designated as ROC 🇹🇼 ). And in 1946, ROC🇹🇼 published a map showing the 11 dash-lines around the South China Sea. And when the Chinese soldiers needed large vessels to sail over to look after the various islands (like the Paracel Islands, the Scarborough Shoal, the Spratley Islands .. etc.), US govt🇺🇲 used their large ships to help the government of ROC 🇹🇼 to transport the Chinese soldiers to the various islands, isles & reefs ( indicated within the 11 dash-lines). However, in Yr 1971, the government of ROC🇹🇼 was expelled from the United Nation 🇺🇳 and in its place, the UN🇺🇳 recognised and accepted the government of PRC 🇨🇳 as the sole legitimate representative government of China ..... And henceforth, the US govt🇺🇲 started to instigate Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia to challenge the PRC🇨🇳 sovereignty over the islands, reefs & isles within the 9 dash-lines and to show its support to Philippines, US🇺🇲 started to send aircraft carriers and warships to the South China Sea too.

Beijing did not dream up some dash line in 1950s but the first Chinese navy ship that was in the area was back in 1909 and 11 years after Philipines became part of US colony when the US defeated Spanish navy. China made the claim to these islands without US rejection and it was also the US that told Phillipines that these water are not part of their territory. On the rusty boat that parked in the middle of the sea it was formally agreed by both government from China and Philippines it needs to be removed rather than letting it rust away. It is better than having India as a neighbor who tried to force the neighbors running and Indian foreign policy, stealing land from neighbors based on border drew by the old colonial master.
