The Lava Lion reminds me of a Baku - a Japanese chimera that has the head of an elephant, the mane of a lion, the body of a tiger, and the tail of an ox. According to Japanese myth, the Baku comes out to devour people's nightmares similar to a dream catcher from Native American cultures.

so you play as an alien creature that goes around destroying the entire ecosystem, and once your done with the ecosystem you destroy a nuclear reactor, and when people try to escape in a space shuttle you destroy that aswell? thats pretty rad if you ask me

I always found amusing that you are basically playing a fight between two eldritch horrors in the middle of a nuclear holocaust, but the game thinks country music is the most fitting background for the occasion.

Very interesting concept but yeah it’s cool

It's a shame this game never got an actual release. It's very unique! And I especially love how the bad(good) ending blames you for leading the Eaters to Earth!

A particularly brutal detail they added for the shuttle boss is that once you blow it up, for a few moments, you can see humans falling from it. Yikes!

Ah. The video game heroes we all know and love, Mario, Sonic, Link, Crash Bandicoot... Skinless Flying, Lovecraftian Rat Creature from my Stress dreams...

A shame this game was never released into the arcades. It looks like alot of fun and very original in concept. Hopefully one day, HAMSTER will emulate this game and release it onto home consoles.

And I actually got to play and complete this game emulated on my uncle's arcade cabinet. It's a really fun game with fast-paced action and originality. Though it's a pity, it's never released on home consoles. At least it is playable physically at The Galloping Ghosts Arcade in Chicago, where a prototype cabinet is built.

At first I thought it was a prehistoric game, control a creature before the age of the dinosaurs etc. I kinda assumed that it may have been the premeisis, till the more outrageous designs came in and then seeing a city and space shuttle, and that there's some kind of alien ecosystem parasite (eaters) So much for my earlier theory!

Strange creature warfare. A lot of shoot em ups have strange body horror themes.

when Joe and Mac developers were asked to create a shooting game like Biohazard Battle (Genesis)

It looks really hard, or unfair. The creature is quite underpowered. Congratulations for playing it so well.

There have been plenty of irredeemable protagonists like Alex Mercer and Kratos but nothing comes close to this. You're The Thing alien on steroids. Its a type of storytelling only Video games can get away with, no one will watch a movie or a TV show where the protagonist is an unfeeling monster that brings an end to all life in existence. I know, this doesn't look that interesting of a game but there's not many games where your main character is an Eldrich Abomination. Even Godzilla has feelings, this thing on the other hand is evil incarnate.

Acording to Pearl | ASE-PRL, getting a time out on the last boss results in a good ending.

The main character is more disgusting than most of the monsters

One of the most underrated shooters. The power up system and endings regarding gameplay are unlike any other shooters of its time.

I think that's the first shoot em up where you can manually shield yourself from projectiles with your tail

You are mistaken. There's two old arcade games where you either ride a dragon; or are one where you can use your tail to accomplish just that.

Thinking the whole thing is a metaphor of how mankind is "killing the planet" right now. The beast is humanity, it eats itself, and the planet will eventually regenerate now that mankind is gone.

And then there's EATER, who is pretending to be EATER while EATER pretends to be EATER to thwart EATER pretending to be EATER.

You seriously played this game without the power up mechanics?? That's some absurd gaming dude. Just the thinking makes me feel the creeps. Oh, BTW, if all of you who didn't play this try it on emulator, I suggest you to take a breath about the title: Why is a chimera? Well, if you aren't one in the beginning, you just make yourself one. Thats were the jaw launching comes in. Whenever it hits an enemy, it deals damage and, the most important part, takes ADN from the prey. Depending on prey, you have an upgrade. Some gives you a scale armor, other makes you a porcupine launching tracking needles, others just heal you. And also, there is like a 2 slot memory for the upgrades, so, if you know where and when pick some upgrades in the right order... You can unlock a unique form. There are just 2 or 3 of these ones, so they are kind of OP. Also, if you hold the shoot button, you charge the bar around the HP, and make a "super" that deals screen damage to everything... In most cases. Why? Because the transformations. Some of them, be it normal or combined, have a unique super attack, depending which form you have. It's a pretty fun game when you know how to play it. Also, if you play with a homie, in 2 player mode you can have some laughs and spice assured. Just the coincidental (or not😂) steals of ADN to mess a transformation and probably making him evolve to the "bad transformation" (yes, there is one. Search for it playing, you will notice it the moment you read the transformation's name)

This game is like the entire "SCP-682 VS The Backrooms" compilation! The Lava Lion looks cool.

Spore because its an evolution based game The Visitor because the Eaters assume the characteristics of the creatures they eat X Multiply because the Eater has a tail which can be used to fling at the enemies (or actually, the good guys)

The bird voice sounds like Ecco the dolphin hurt screech.

This game feels like a creepypasta

The concept looks pretty interesting. But I am confused by the large size of the player sprite, in shoot'em up it usually causes big problems. Also the boss theme sounds very simple and obsessive, after two listening laps the song stuck in my head a lot. In general, if fix some points, the game would be great, it's a pity that it was not released.

Between the horrendously disgusting protagonist, its lack of flying animation, the strange enemies and their fast, bizarre movement, and the fast, upbeat soundtrack, this feels like if the weird side of youtube was a video game.

this was only the unreleased prototype of the game, if it was finished maybe it wouldn't be so bad. Also that thing is an Eater, a parasitic monster thats the epitome of evil, so evil that every creature instinctively tries to kill it
