Chill UK Highway Driving with Toyota Corolla & Openpilot v0.8.0

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is my first ever highway trip with Openpilot, and boyo it did an amazing job!
Openpilot controls the steering, as well as the gas and brake so well that I ended up using it for more than 80% of the trip, with me going both hands- and feet- free!
Initially, I didn't fancy trying out assisted lane-change in my first trip, but it impressed me so much mid-trip that I gave it a go (in fact, several goes) as well.
All in all, I'd say Openpilot definitely lives up to its claim of "making drive chill", and is well worth a try if you do a lot of highways.
Kudos to comma.ai and its community!
There are not many videos about Openpilot experiences in the UK. Hopefully, this video might help provide a reference point and convince more people on board :-)
* Route: Roundtrip between Eltham & Maidstone via A20 & M20
* Vehicle: Toyota Corolla Touring Sports 1.8 (MY 2020)
* Setup: Openpilot v0.8.0 running on Comma Two

Hi, is it the corolla hatch or the sedan? And does Open Pilot disengage below 16MPH? or at a certain a speed?

Hi, great video. Are you mounting the Comma Two as high as possible in your Corolla (of course after considering to open the stock camera cover (slide down) and to unmount the Comma Two (slide up))? Reason I'm asking is that this is the first time I noticed from your Comma Two screen, your bonnet occupy around 20% (the height) of the camera view.

Hi, as you noted there is a gap about 1-2 cm wide between the mount and the bottom of the trim cover, because otherwise the front-facing camera won’t see me properly for driver monitoring to be effective. Openpilot will perform a calibration procedure before its first drive and this is still well within the margin I think.

@@ukopdriver Thanks for the reply. Good to know that about the C2 positioning and how it could affect driver monitoring (DM). I am from RHD country as well (malaysia). Have yet to receive my Corolla but will definitely pay attention to the DM performance later. How the DM performed for RHD?

@@wangmat9219 DM works OK if you switch on the RHD toggle in the settings - that tells comma two to monitor the opposite half of the front-facing camera. That said, I’d prefer it if comma actually flips the smartphone in their mount for RHD users, just so the camera gets closer to the driver which will definitely further improve DM performance. I might do a video about it in the future.

@@ukopdriver just received my Corolla and tested with the OpenPilot. You are right, DM is not as smooth as what I've seen from US (KZread videos). Need to sit straight-up with our body slightly inclined to the left.

Cool. Or you can try sitting a bit “laid back” so your face goes into the camera view.

Does the Factory RSA still show signs in the gauge cluster for you? That's my only concern with putting one in my 21 Corolla Hybrid. I live in BFE with boring long straight highways and not much scenery, so this would be a real lifesaver for helping prevent driver fatigue.

Assuming by RSA you mean “Road Sign Assist” (?) then yes I believe it should function just as normal with or without Openpilot connected / engaged. From my experience though, I’ve really only seen RSA picking up speed limits in the UK (i.e. no stop or give-way signs) just for your reference.

All factory systems will work the same other than cruise control once it is set and any lane keeping systems when Openpilot is engaged. Any other factory system not to do with these will be completely unaffected.

Soooo .... Been eying up one of these for a while. I'm also in the UK and have a 2020 Corolla Hatchback. So good to see it works. How was your experience getting it shipped? Were you stung for import tax etc? What was total cost?

Hi, they ship it via DHL and it only took one week to arrive. Received a call from DHL but no tax levied.

Indeed I was eventually charged with the duty. DHL sent me the notice by post about 2 months after I received my comma two.

Hi, Interesting video. The question is if this is more relaxing than driving without Openpilot? The driver seems pretty tense and not at ease with Op.

  • @ukopdriver

Haha, that’s probably because it was my *1st* drive with OP on the highway :-) But even then, I was massively impressed and definitely felt the chill. Now I’ve become quite used to the system and much more “at ease” with it. Simply put, if without Openpilot I start to feel fatigue after about an hour on highway, with Openpilot I’ll probably be able to do 3 hours or even more.
