    That depends on how you define affordable. The Vac 700 is not really that affordable, especially the Vac 700 Iris, which is the one she's using. That one runs about $80 on Goulet Pen Company. Which is where I get all of my fountain pens and supplies.

    @@evarose5850 The best part about cheaper fountain pens is it helps you find the perfect one. I started out with a LAMY Safari (f) and now I use a VAC 700 and 580 AL both extra fine nibs. It's an expensive hobby to get into. When I got into it I scoffed at the $100 pens, not anymore lol. Fountain pen enthusiast like me get so much joy when we read someone getting their first fountain pens. It's such a wonderful experience writing with them.

    @@EckmanJones Incoming C1, M2 and possibly a Safari start set from a local store since I can get the pen, a Diamine bottle, 5 cartridges and a converter for about 40 bucks, which in my country is a STUPID god buy, it`s basically 56 fills for a 3rd the price of any pen I`m going to use, so I really have to hate it for it not to be a good buy (: The Moonman pens I`m honestly getting because I fell in love with the look of them 👀

    I think that if you're sure about the tools you'd enjoy using, you shouldn't feel too bad for spending a bit of money on them, think that you'll be using them for hours on end and it's uplifting to be using the tools we deserve. Recently I started to make a comeback to inking in my sketchbook and I discovered to my surprise that I like Acrylic markers a lot; their black ink is as deep as you can get with a fude pen or even some sumi-e inks. Happy to hear about the artbook project, looking forward to its release!

    I've been sketching with fountain pens for the past few years and I absolutely love it! If you want a thinner nib size, go for an extra fine nib from a japanese pen company. Their nibs are usually finer than most other fountain pen nibs.

  • @EckmanJones

    @EckmanJones

    2 жыл бұрын

    I've own a couple of Pilot pens with extra fine nibs, the nib size itself is pretty close to LAMY. They tend to be a bit scratchier and have a habit of catching on the paper a bit. Takes bit more practice to use than your standard feather touch writing. Thus far, TWSBI has really has some of the best nibs out there. Just for reference I own a 580 AL and a Vac 700, I gave away my ECO to one of my daughters.

  • @IshikaShanai

    @IshikaShanai

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@EckmanJones 100% agree with the scratchy comment, but as I mainly use the pens for drawing and writing in sketchbooks with very smooth paper, it rarely is an issue for me. I have the extra-fine nib TWSBI 580 (reg clear version, not AL) and the medium fine nib sailor pro gear slim, and prefer the nib of the sailor pen. So much so that I'm about to replace my TWSBI 580 for the sailor pro gear realo. The fun part is experimenting with what pens you like using and seeing how the differences in nibs, ink capacity, and aesthetic factor into what ultimately makes it suitable for our specific tastes. But also, keeping in mind, the quality of paper you use also makes or breaks your experience too as I found that cheaper paper in notebooks would cause my writing to feather, even with such thin nibs, so I switched to writing in my sketchbooks (I have the same sketchbooks by trickywagon).

    @@IshikaShanai Oh yeah definitely, I did this job where they needed someone who could write really nice cursive and I just happen to own a couple of calligraphy pens, one of them being a Lamy Joy with a 1.1 stub nib. Personally I think my handwriting sucks, but they and the wedding party loved it. I went the extra mile and bought some really nice parchment paper for the job. They paid me in handmade ink, wax sealed and everything. Strangely enough it smells like cinnamon. If it wasn't so expensive per page I would love to have a box of it.

    im no fountain pen expert but i think the skipping is because of how you hold the pen! it works most optimally with a certain hold for writing so maybe that's something to look into! Love these sketches though, going to go sketch with my fountain pen hahaha

    Hi~ Regarding your questions about a fountain pen that has a nib similar to G-nib: -BlueDew Pens, made in singapore! There are some sellers that only sell the nib unit so you can buy your own pen body that's cheaper. (it's said that jinhao's are the best bodies for it for cheaper options) -Tachikawa Comic Nib Fountain Pen --doesn't look as pretty and looks cheapish (like muji gel pens level) but is definitely easily considered as a starter fountain pen in my book. -Pilot Falcon Elabo SEF nib - so many artists stand by this pen. And i have yet to hear anything about pilot skipping and stopping. I think in terms of your needs, those three might fit the best. As for the skipping, it's quite possible that it's a matter of ink and pen compatibility as well. Usually TWSBI pens are considered "wet" pens or "gushers" so "dry" inks work best with it for a balanced effect. If it's not the ink and pen compatibility, the nib possibly might need tuning to distribute ink better -- sometimes it's also quite possible that it skips because your hand travels too fast for the ink flow to keep up -- it happens a lot with the flex pens i've tried. further information about fountain pens can be found thru the Fountain Pen Network community! JetPens might also provide good resources or tips in terms of fountain pen care. I hope this helps and I really enjoyed this drawing session 😍🥰 PS. Yes you can dip the nib in water to reactivate the ink or improve ink flow. And a LOT of fountain pen inks are multichromatic (idk if that's a term) i've seen some pretty fountain pen inks with shimmer and sheen. Sometimes they definitely go from blue to pink and green all at once when diluted in water. You might have fun checking out using a Hobonichi or a journal with Tomoe River Paper specifically for your ink art -- the paper is super thin though but hella smooth...it's favored by fountain pen users because of how much it shows off the qualities of an ink. I'm really happy seeing artists use fountain pens more. It makes me so happy!

    I'm watching this on a quiet Sunday morning, with a hot noodle and hot tea 💖 You're really on point when you said you want to draw in a fun way again. I'm a landscape architecture student, so as someone who's in art major (not necessarily art major but yeah we 'tend' to put art touches in our projects), I really get what you meant. I have to draw consecutively for a whole semester and let me tell you, it wasn't a pleasant semester 😂 It was the worst, I've never been that low before (but hey I'm stronger this time ✋😀). I haven't got anything upgraded besides my art supplies. I'm not the type who will get better by practicing consecutively, in fact it's just making my skill get worse. Weird, right? So I tend to hold myself back from drawing everyday, make sure I get the rest I need first. I thought I was suitable for a major that related to art because (they said) I can draw, but now? I don't think so 😂 sometimes I was just sitting in front of my laptop and rethink; why I chose this path? I believe it was because I'm in love with arts. I'm starting to drawing and painting again, after a pretty long (semi) hiatus period. Still trying to hold myself back tho 😂 because nothings good will happen if I rush everything, right? Sometimes it can be soooo depressing too. My last semester giving me trauma, I still remember the days I was crying over my assignments while cutting some papers and boards. It still gives me goosebumps whenever I remember those days. It was a hell. But now I'm trying to remember why I chose this path, why I chose to pursue in art. I still love arts, I still love to draw, even though it's hard. 2 days ago was when I realized all the old feelings, the fun part of arts. It was a pleasant night, just focusing on my painting, not caring about anything else. Not to mention, I wasn't on auto-pilot mode. I was conscious with every stroke I've made. It was a rough day, but after i finished it (which is so rare for me to have finished piece), I felt so alive, finally I could go to sleep peacefully. I'm trying to recreate that feelings this morning, I hope I will succeed 😂 Anyway, hope you have a good day 💖 Ps : I just realized that you upload videos weekly. I was waiting and wondering if you were on hiatus tho 😭💔

    totally relate to the trouble with just drawing for fun. i'm working toward becoming a concept artist/character illustrator one day, but i'm a massive perfectionist and tend to just stop drawing for days/weeks on end because i never live up to my own expectations. i got a new a5 sketchbook (to keep separate from my schoolwork and to just keep on me wherever i go for when inspiration strikes) with the goal of loosening up and being less rigid, and it's been a godsend! i love the jinx aesthetic of pink/blue, so i got some posca pens and like to just doodle with those in empty spaces on my pages, and it's been really helping. it's made such a difference being able to sit down in my lunch period and doodle my characters based off pinterest refs, and it's actually made me excited to draw again.

    I have a Twsbi that also skips. And I live in a low humidity area. You can use bleach to clear it out. It can also have a lot to do with the ink. I’m using Iroshizuko ink in mine and it still skips. The Twsbi Eco is by far the best from the brand. I can recommend Lamy safari and Lamy ink is lovely and not as pricey as others. My go-to is a pelikan Twist but it only comes in broad tips- it’s labeled as medium but it’s THICK. :)

    Super rec trying out a rotring isograph for those super fine fine lines and smaller works if you haven't prior! They can be even smaller than the copics and are a little more durable, w the bonus of being refillable! I fill like they might suit the intricate details of your work super well! This spread came out great, and I actually super love the texture the ink gave to the overall page (though I can only imagine the struggle-- I have a couple of Ferris wheel press inks too, and the thought of trying to do clean washes with them truly does sound like such a gd struggle)!

    I've had problems like that when I use shimmering ink because of the particulates in the ink. Sounds like the ink dried up a bit, which is odd, TWSBI pens form a really solid seal. I own both a Vac 700 and a 580 AL. Which are my daily use pens. I have a bunch of LAMY pens as well. I've never diluted fountain pen ink, but the recommended dilution is 2 parts ink to one part distilled water. It's common for calligraphy artists to dilute ink this way. Edit If this is your first fountain pen, what an awesome first pen. I started with a Lamy Safari (f). Aside from my TWSBI Vac 700 (ef) and 580 AL (ef) I also have a LAMY AL-Star (ef), Vista (ef) and Joy (1.1). I've owned a few others that I have given away to friends and family. I have so much ink because when I get a new pen, I also get a couple of bottles of ink. I have one bottle that was hand made for me as payment for some writing I did for them. Welcome to the community, we're so happy you're here. Be sure to check out r/fountainpens, that's where I found my first pen. Oh yeah not sure if you got it, but definitely get the vac filler bottle for your pen. It's worth it's weight in gold, making fully filling that pen so easy.

    Consider a Himalaya v2 pen upgraded with an Extra Fine Ultra Flex nib from Fountain Pen Revolution. MSRP is currently $53 but they frequently offer 10-20% off sales and even the rare BOGO. The materials don't feel as nice as a TWSBI but it behaves better than my TWSBI and the line variation is better than a G nib.

    Hey, i love your videos, your so talented. Just a suggestion, have you thought about getting a humidifier? I got a cheap one from Amazon because my room at uni is so dry and it was making my plants become dehydrated, but the humidifier has worked wonders to purify and add moisture back into the air. P.s these long videos are so calming to watch x

    I would suggest trying Japanese fountain pen. The fine nibs are like extra fine in other brands. A great very affordable pen would be their metropolitan pens or kakuno pens. I know you cane even get an extra fine with the metro. Not certain kakuno. Last I knew you can get both for around $20ish dollars depending were you but. I think the metropolitan still comes with a converter too. The kakuno doesn't but the pilot converters are really affordable. If buy a separate converter I highly recommend getting their con 70. It has a much larger capacity them the standard ones. I know the kakuno get take that converter, I'm 100% sure about the metropolitan. I haven't tried it yet on mine. These will get you much fine lines. There won't but any line variation though. Also a other trick I use with fountain pens, not all will, do this, but try writing or drawing with the pen Nib upside down. Many pens can do this and use it produces a finer line. I do have flip right side up occasionally to get the nib full of ink again. There will be more feedback using it this way. Also if you more line variation you could try pens with bent nibs but I don't think they write as fine though. A broad or italic nib will give you thicker bolder lines on the down stroke and finer lines with a side stroke. Otherwise you're you would have to be prepared to shell out a lot of money for flex nibs, they usually start at about $150 and up.

    Since you mentioned being heavy-handed - a lot of people new to fountain pens press too hard with them because they’re used to other kinds of pen where that is necessary. Fountain pens are so inky you don’t need to press hard and pressing hard will damage the nib by spreading the tines, which will cause skipping.

    apparently you can modify one of the jinghao fountain pens (its like $6-10 usd) to use gnibs but honestly i really like the tachikawa school-G. its kinda cheap and the body is kinda ugly and light but the nib is amazing and has pretty good line variation for a pen thats $7-8... you can refill it, if you just use a syringe to put ink into the cartridge it comes with. the sketch ink by rohrer & klingner is a waterproof fountain pen ink that comes in a few colors :) uh also i dont know if you know but japanese brand fountain pens' EF is finer than western brands' EF. i don't know why but it's a thing haha

    Quick question: since you were once using fine liners (well, something along these lines), which ones do you recommend? For some reason all the brands I tried until now don't last enough. Or maybe I use them too much-

    I find that some run out quickly if you use them a lot, but ESPECIALLY copic brand lol they dry out and run out so fast for me. I prefer Sakura pigma micron pens, they honestly seem to last a looong time, though the ink flow does thin out; but still I'd say it's pretty tough to empty those. I think i've tried a couple of other brands, not many but the Microns are great and don't smudge with alcohol markers if you let them dry out properly before colouring in.

    Hey, i know of the tachikawa school-g pen which is a fountain pen but similar to a g-nib which is under 20 bucks i think, i do not recommend the finest nib as it is cloggy. In my little experience the regular nib size is already rather fine :). I know of fountain pen safe inks of Rohrer und Klingner, the sketch inks which are waterproof. But I have no experience with that ink, so use at your own risk :) reviews are a little varied of that

    May I suggest a fountain pen from (Fountain Pen Revolution) FPR, any pen with extra fine ultra flex nib, #6. The only permanent ink (waterproof) for fountain pens is Platinum (black) for flexable line work that will not run from coloring with watercolor. DO NOT use Indian ink or other inks used with a brush…it will clog and destroy a fountain pen. I was looking for a flex solution for years and this is the only one that comes close to fine brush work. Tombo makes a very small fine flex line (not the large ones) get the soft tip that produces a very fine waterproof line for cartoon work. It will replace all your brushes for line work.

    Where was one other that claim to be fountain pen compatible. Once ink ran out the feed became welded inside the section and the whole pen had to be thrown away… I wish I could remember which one it was… I don’t.

    I definitely want to see more of these relax chill videos…though I am a hypocrite because I love everything you do lol. It’s funny that you brought up manga artist having to refill their g nib every 5 seconds cuz I have been having a very similar problem as of late and it’s pretty annoying. Maybe I need to look into fountain pens as well.
