Children of Bodom - "Hate Crew Deathroll (Live)" | ROADIE REACTIONS: REWIND

I revisited one of the most important metal bands of my teenage years, and had no idea watching this would be as emotionally taxing as it was. I hope there are some others out there that can share this experience with me, and possibly others discovering the excellence of Alexi Laiho and Children of Bodom.

Legit, he's the only person outside of a family member dying that I really felt upset about. COB were the first "extreme" metal band I got into after the usual Iron Maiden/Metallica thing. This band holds a special place in my heart, and always will. Nice to see Janne doing things again with Warmen, they have Petri Lindroos on vocals and guitar which is cool

@@MethicalYT actually.. their personal life is something we don’t know shit about. He seemed genuinely happy with her and if you read his last interview from December, he was excited about future and had been spending some quiet time in 2020 (like many of us). I wish his partner would have tried harder to keep him away from alcohol, but I mean.. An addict is an addict. He was a grown man who made his own decisions.. I don’t think anyone could have necessarily done anything more. He was loved and had a lot of people who cared about him.

The sound itself may be original, as in they didn't edit anything to fix wrong notes and stuff, but professional DVD releases like this are always mixed and mastered afterwards. I have seen cob many times in the 2000s and tbh. they never convinced me live. (I like their studio work a lot!) Alexi used to say that the drinking etc. esp. in this time never affected the performances, but thats not true ! What I have heard about the last years is that alexi was more professional on tour and that the quality improved. but just hearsay, I havent seen them for a decade. we all know that drinking and excessive behavior is part of the whole thing. but I think that artists also have the responsibility "to be in shape" for a good performance. it´s a thin line and cob is, i dont like to say it, one of the few bands I have in my mind that crossed it more than 1-2 times.

I was soooo waiting this, thank you Tank from bottom of my heart 😍 My first touch, as a teenager, with metal music was Stone (Roope's ex-band). Stone is one of the biggest reason why Finland have so many metal bands. I was musically a little pit lost between ages 16-26. After that I founded my musical interest again, it was mostly metal and classical. I was over 30 years when I founded COB 🤩 Now I'm almost 50 years old and the death of no other celebrity has touched me so much than Alexi's death. First 2 weeks I cryied every day... And here we go again 😭 Even I'm from Finland, saw them only once on stage, precious memory 😊 and I have this dvd, it's one thing what "I will take with me if house is burning". I know some people criticized these "reactions", but I don't feel the same. As a fan, I see if some reactions are false. Atleast for me, in this pain of mine, it was great relief to see and hear people who shared their memories of Alexi. And found out how much people appreciated him, not only as a musician, but also as a person who was so funny, humble and warm hearted. He was so down to earth. Always had time for fans and shared his passion and knowledge to a novice musicians. He left us way too soon, but I think he lived his life as fullest. Made his dreams come true and still was his own self. Some people criticized him earlier how he changed their music during years. What I loved about COB that they was evolving all the time, always something different. One thing what make me even more sad, is that their last album Hexed is one of my favorite. How much awesome music Alexi took with him, we will never going to know that... Hugs 😍

Awesome band, and Alexi, pfffff! so magnetic, and powerful, the friend with who i was there told me while we were staring at him: "Alexi is the sexiest creature on earth while he is on stage" and hell yes he was. @@TankTheTech yeah that lead in the chorus is difficult to get down on it’s own. I say that as someone who’s trying to get the string skipping down at that speed, I can’t imagine how much it would’ve taken to get that same part down while singing.

  • @AgeofJP

    @AgeofJP

    3 жыл бұрын

@@metalftw9652 the most insane thing is that most of his solos are still leagues above in difficulty...once you can play the chorus you just have to play it so often that you basically play it by muscle memory, then get the vocals down individually and combining the two at this point isn't that hard. It's just a matter of time you have to dedicate to every song individually and it is generally only dependant on your confidence. Also a great way to get better with that is by simply not looking at your fretboard (unless you jump like 10 frets)...compared to playing and singing this chorus, the first solo took me like two more years of learning completely new techniques and developing the left hand dexterity required to play at that speed. And even now it would take me weeks if not months if I were to learn another solo of his, the stuff he wrote and performed when he was 17 years old...I'm so sad he's gone but he left a great legacy and created thousands of new guitarists. I've spotted many younger bands where the lead guitarist plays an ESP Alexi signature model and that's when I know... "One of us"

I would put Alexi's instrument domination 1st and Marco's 2nd, but vice versa with vocals: Marco 1st, Alexi 2nd. As bands and genres, I always preferred COB, but with Marco's training and talent as opposed to the screaming vocals...Marco.

Awesome show and thanx for sharing your history with their music. Unfortunately I only saw them once, at a small festival in 2005 in Sweden. The only thing I remember is that I thought it was awesome even though I had a really bad hangover from the pre party the day before!

I was 15 years old watching Uranium. Juliya was interviewing Alexi and Janne. I though Alexi was the most beautiful man I had ever seen in my life. THEN I heard the song Needled 24/7 and my mind was even more blown away. Soon after that I discovered Sinergy and was in musical heaven. I had many important moments with this music like blasting Follow the Reaper when I got my drivers license. Whenever I listen to that album I remember that time in my life. I ran my first half marathon while listening to Something Wild etc. I have a friend that lives in Finland and is heavily involved in the music scene. When I was pregnant with my 1st child, she had Henkka send me a personal video congradulating me on behalf of the whole band for the baby. I was broken hearted when I heard the news and cried and cried... I love seeing the emotion in your eyes for I also have feel it in my soul. Thank you for doing this video \M/

Wow. That definitely took me back. Listened to them a lot back in the day (Sixpounder is a personal fav), but haven’t in a good while, and I think I’ve avoided them recently for similar reasons. Gonna be throwing them on my playlist for the day, though. Got a long drive to make, and despite the few tears that will definitely flow, I could use a good neck workout. Thanks so much for this, Tank. You do awesome stuff, and it’s a pleasure to be on this musical journey with you.

Wow Tank. I do no usually comment often at KZread, but... You discovered them the way I did. It was not a friend, but my finnish cousin (I'm half finnish, half german), where I listened to Follow the Reaper first. I think it was... 2002. I was 14. A year later I discovered that Hate Crew Deathroll was released, when I was visiting my family in the summer. Hate Crew Deathroll was the first song, and is with Angel don't kill and Bed of Razors my favourite from this band. Really loved it. I sitll have the first Merchandise in my wardrobe, a black T-Shirt with "Hatecrew Deathroll", Size M, although today I'm size 3xl :D Keep up your fantastic work Tank and greetings from Germany!

Hey man, I feel this entire thing so hard. Alexi Laiho is one of my 2 biggest influences on guitar, and Children of Bodom is also one of my big 3 for my metal tastes. I hadn't hard listened to them in a while (some songs on various playlists still but thats it), and when I woke up and saw the news I was shattered. So at work I decided to front to back their whole discography, then got home and played a bunch of riffs on my LTD-Alexi 600. I don't think its even hit me fully, 3 months later, that I won't get new music from my guitar Idol anymore.

also fun fact about his guitar, He actually used to use a Jackson RR model, but while on tour his guitars were stolen at the airport. Jackson said they couldn't get him new replacements in time, but ESP said they could make some for him and get them to him quickly. After that, he stuck it out. And yeah, the smaller point of the v is a bit longer on the ESP to avoid shit from Jackson.

I remember seeing a Finnish TV ad for Something Wild in 1997. I was just so intrigued by the cover art (and I've had heard 'Deadnight Warrior' already), that the next day I went straight to the bank to withdraw some of my saved "monthly allowances" (I was about 9 yo at the time) and bought the album from my local record store. It had the original cover with the old blue logo (drawn by Finnish black metal musician Janne Sova), too bad I lost it years ago. However I feel you, this hit me also like a ton of bricks, and I think mainly because they've had so huge influence on me on many levels. Back in the day, they were heavy as fuck, but more importantly, the aspect that stood out was the TRUE no fucks given attitude considering your art and music. Not many bands or artists have that. Anyway, love your channel (I'm a music/gear geek myself). Keep it going!

Your reaction now was almost exactly the same as mine when I watched this video at the day of the news. So much emotion man.. That being said, I must point out the fact that about 30-40% of what you said about his sig esp was correct 😅 Anyway, you said you haven’t seen this show, so you definitely should take your time and see this whole gig, I think there is a complete playlist of the dvd (each song in a separate video, but from the same source including all the speaks and stuff) on YT in HQ. This particular concert is the best Bodom live record there is imo. That time period the band was at it’s best for what comes to the live shows.

@@TankTheTech Sorry brother, didn't mean to be an asshole. You are one of the best YT at the moment! (Y) 1. The guitar is ESP, not LTD. They sold that particular ESP Alexi signature -model for some time, but haven't since. The alexi LTD signature scythe is nowhere near the real ESP-lineup -version of it. Those two guitars really couldn't be more apart and he never played a single LTD-guitar on stage. He also had more sig-models over the years (like you said), but that's a whole different story. Alexi signature-ESPs (not LTDs) has been on the market over the years all the time. 2. That mike is his signature thing and the guitar indeed has a battery and an on/off -switch. It is true that the passive EMG-HZ mic is basically on the guitar, but there’s a twist: the guitar has an EMG F-ALX -set, which icludes some EMG-mic (like I said, i think it’s basically EMG-HZ) and preamp! The pre-amp switch is located under the volume-knob, it’s very small and kinda impossible to notice from the video if you don’t know it’s there. I could say something about the differences in ESP CS USA and the original ESP CS in Japan (in whitch the og scythe is made in), but that might not be relevant in this case.

Been a Bodom fan since '05, now over half my life. COB headlining tour with Trivium and Amon Amarth was my first metal show, ever. And that's all it took. Saw Alexi and crew 6 more times in the span of 9 years, finally got to meet them on their 15th Anniversary tour. Both Roope and Alexi signed my Jackson RR5 flying V! They were all such cool guys, and they absolutely blew the doors down at the show that night - I decided then and there that would be the last time I saw them live because I would never have a better experience than that night. 10/10, could not copy again. As much as I love my Scandinavian death metal bands, there is none that I screamed, growled and headbang'd with more note for note than Children of Bodom. Legendary in my mind and so many others, rightfully so, Hate Crew is tattooed on my heart forever. RIP Alexi, and thank you. \m/

Thank you for this video, a very naked and honest reaction! I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart. I relate to your feelings very much and wept quite a bit, I myself couldn't write the article I wanted to at the time of Alexis passing was released, it was too heavy. CoB and Alexi Laiho was very influential to me too, I believe you and I are about the same age/teens around the same years. 97-03 was truly one of the best eras of deathmetal (not speaking of metal overall) CoB meshed the trash with the melodic scene. The camo pants got huge bc of them (then the blue or woodland, now it's black n white bc of Sabaton lol), I started wearing makeup bc of them. Alexis metal cover of Vivaldi was one of the first videos I descovered and fell in love with on KZread. I got two older brothers, one playing bass that got myself into wanting playing bass and I later starting posthardcore/metalcore bands (as everyone else in the hight of warped tour years 06-12 lol), before becoming a father. The oldest brothers was playing extreme solos on his first electric guitar that was a Jacksson, to this day my favourite metal guitar brand. I was actually supposed to go to this specific gig in 06 but got really ill and missed both CoB, AFI, Wednesday 13 that played around the same time. Some fun fact about the venue, which I've visited and worked at countless of times. Arenan and Klubben is located in Fryshuset(Freezer house), which is a old warehouse turned into a school by a guy who in the 90s wanted the youths and especially skinheads(neo nazis) to have a safe youth club to go, that was free from that belief, and that belief could be turned around by meeting ppl from other cultures. And yes they still have that focus on anti racism and ppl leaving gangs and a kriminal lifestyle. Arenan is their basketball court, that houses some of Sweden's best basketball teams especially female teams. Fryshuset is mainly gymnasium (equivalent to the US senior high school), privately run, where one can go the normal lessions + focusing on ex sports like basketball and skateboarding, arts and even music (with focus on pop, hip-hop, rap, rock and metal etc) and music production. PS reach out if you have a hard time finding a copy of the children of bodom dvd, I would gladly help out! With best regards, another bearded stage tech and stagehand in Stockholm.
