Well they started with 2 guitarists. Ville Friman and Ville Vanni. Vanni left, and Markus from Omnium Gatherum replaced him. Incredible guitarist. Friman soon found it hard to tour so they got Jani Liimatainen to go clean vocals and 2nd guitars live. Eventually Jani joined full time and insomnium now has 3 guitarists. (All great in their own right) Friman just tours when he can. This Song is one of the few songs now showcasing all 3 guitarists together in a video. So it’s cool to finally see that is what I think he’s saying. That’s it in a nutshell. Essentially they did an Iron Maiden lol

@@RossDoughty The music video has 3 guitarists (not including the bassist). Insomnium has had 3 guitarists for 3 or 4 years now. This was done because one of them (the dude who's been the main songwriter until the Winter's Gate album, Ville Friman - seen at 2:55) lives in the UK, and not in Finland like the rest of the members. Ville could not tour all the time, so Jani would help out on tours instead. They figured it was only logical to bring Jani in permanently. Now, Insomnium officially has 3 guitarists: Ville Friman, Jani Liimatainen, and Markus Vanhala - but I think only 2 of them tour, Markus & Jani. Funnily enough, Tank actually touched on this a bit at around 4:00 while I was still typing out my comment. :P

I was lucky enough to ride the melodeath wave in the 90s and follow ALL the Finnish bands as well as the Swedish! Insomnium had my heart from the very first listen in the early 2000s. They were such a breath of fresh air by the mid 2000s when metalcore took center stage. (In 1994, Amorphis- Tales from the Thousand Lakes started my love of Finnish metal!!!) For 20 years Insomnium has been my #1 go to band and I always look forward to anything they release! Im lucky to have seen them live a few times also!!! Their emotional intelligence and technical skill, as well as just clever arrangements of sounds, just shine through. I read a commenter say once, "the band with the crying guitars", and I completely understand what they meant. Rich and deep emotional sounds that are just seeped with emotion. Thanks for giving them your awesome commentary and a platform to recognize and celebrate their greatness!!!!!

"Melodeath is the fucking best Dude" - yes, yes, and a thousand times yes!!! Insomnium never fails to deliver. They are as reliable as the Sun rising in the East and setting in the West. For what it's worth, their 2nd and 7th album where also concept albums. They're good like that. Cheers!

Listening to Insomnium has gotten me through some incredibly difficult times, including the death of my dad 7 months ago. The band holds a special place in my heart and this reaction vid is just rad. Awesome song and awesome reaction!

Such a great band! I stayed up until 4am every night on 10,000 tons of metal cruise to watch their sets!

If I recall correctly, Ville recently moved back to Finland to take a job as a biology professor. That might be why he appears in the video as it's now easier for him to meet up with the rest of the band.

Yeah that's right. He's been working in my my hometown of York, UK at the University of York but his personal site on weebly states he's going to be moving to work in Helsinki.

Can't wait for the album to come out! This song is a real earworm.

Pre-order already done on Day1. With Artbook and everything. Saw them live for the first time a few weeks ago and it was amazing. I just love their vibe.

I actually met my girlfriend in Insomnium gig this year. We were headbanging there together. This is so so good. Vintage Insomnium as you rightly said. 1st of December is gonna be tough choise between them and Amorphis cruelly playing in same day in different cities both with amazing support too.

It is truly a classic Insomnium piece, and as song writer Ville said, kinda stuff he comes up when he picks up guitar. Interesting to hear how the whole album goes, if this is in happiest part of the scale we are going, once again, dive deep. On Artbook version, there is also an extra EP and Niilos short story “Anno 1696”, which he teased a bit when he read whole Winter's gate -novel on a live stream few years ago. That version is on CD only, so pretty much had to pre-order everything. Another part of waiting anxiety is how they utilize visitors of the album, Sakis Tolis from Rotting Christ and beloved Johanna Kurkela. While waiting, another dark evening with Winter's gate.

Oh this was really nice. I hadn't heared of Insomnium until today, but i will check out more of them for sure. To return the favour, i suggest you check out "Seven times eternity" from "Pertness". A quite unknown/underrated metal band from Switzerland.

Best band in the world! They seem to have an endless fountain of haunting and amazing melodies. My life changed when I heard them for the first time when they released their 2nd album Since the Day It All Came Down back in 2004.

The fact that Jani and Alexi was kind of "enemies" before makes this guitar appropriation even beautiful

A concept album and Insomnium remainds me always about their 2016 masterpiece 'Winter's Gate', which is 40 minute long album with one song. The story is about vikings on Ireland. About the song 'Lilian', I liked it a lot, but now knowing that it will be a concept album I am even more excited.

Omg this wonderful band is even here (I subscribed to this channel only a week ago or so).. I know them right from the release of Shadows of the Dying Sun album, still one of my favorite release..

Insomnium is one of the best bands in all of metal, no doubt. I'm really looking forward to this album. I'm hoping that, as a concept album, it's anywhere near as good as Winter's Gate was. It's a high bar, and one that only they can meet. I saw it pop up in those suggestions- have you listened to the new August Burns Red track yet? It kicks ass, too.

And what a nice thing to do for Alexi I mean, from what I hear he was a phenomenal dude, and it's nice to see his fellow Finnish bands giving him small tributes here and there. just got to see Nightwish live, and they had a picture of him up there near the end.

@@TankTheTech They are coming out with a new album in 2023 and I think they just dropped a new song recently called Atrium. I know you are really more geared to featuring new music rather than going back and looking at a bands older material so maybe have a look. They are also touring North America soon in Novemeber and I will be checking them out when they hit Toronto.

I love most kinds of metal but I definitely agree you, Melodeath is definitely the best. Insomnium are probably my favourite band around outside of Lovebites and Sylosis. Their sound is just so good but it also feels uplifting to me while listening to them.

Really sick song. I think I've watched some of their stuff here and there but I never looked too much more into them because I've been trying to check out too much stuff. I had no idea that Ville is a doctor so thanks for that heads up. O.O I really enjoyed the video and I'm intrigued by the story behind it, so I guess I'll been looking up about Swedish witch trials at some point. Do you know if the short story is available to read somewhere? I found something written by him on goodreads but I don't think it's the story associated with this song. Though I guess of course I have no idea if it would have an English version either XDD

Insomnium, IMHO, are like Nightwish to me. Allow me to explain that, as one is melo-death, and one is symphonic. The similarity is in that I don't think either band, apart from one or two "odd" tracks, has put out a bad album, EP, or single. Even the odd tracks from both bands are still eminently listenable to, although they don't hit as hard as, for example, "While We Sleep" from Insom, or "Ghost Love Score" from NW. It has to be something in the water in Finland, man... as one of the big three of metal (Finland, Netherlands, Germany), maybe it has something to do with being coastal so all that cold Baltic/North Atlantic salt water can seep awesomeness into the drinking water of all three nations

They were one of the Major Bands that got me to Metal….my Favorit Track is „Last of the Heroes“, unfortunately there is no Offical video or so….but from the Track „Break away“ there is a official Video, highly recommended….They were a young Student Band with Lots of Talent, undortunateley they decided to study and become Great Experts in science and medicine so they were and are pretty under the radar….i would highly appreciate it of you would do a Reaktion on Sturm und drang, keep it up and Metal on, Love you 😊

Insomnium are great! 🤘. Hey man, I wanted to ask you, being that on other occasions you have commented that a large part of the audience of your channel is from Germany, I wonder if you have not heard the band Obscura? is a technical/progressive death metal band from germany precisely, and they are one of those bands where everyone is an incredible musician. If you don't know them, you should seriously give them a try! In my opinion, they are a band that draws a lot from the legacy of Chuck Schuldiner. Although some of their best songs (imo) are old, their recent material is very good too, and they are still promoting their latest album. His most recent video "The Neuromancer" is a good sample if you want to hear something recent.
