Not much to go wrong on an air hammer bud. Even a soft hammer is good enough for awhile. Not a harbor freight shill, don't own this hammer, and plenty disappointed with a decent amount of dumb tools from harbor freight. Basically comes down to moisture removal and oiling before putting a tool away. Maybe he more $ is less sensitive to proper use, but this is a great deal imo. May be disappointed in time for semi-occasional-hobbyist use after I get one for honda ball joint and bearing removal, but I bet it would be quite good for quite a while. t.buys american whenever possible, as in +200% cost over chine shit for an "I need it for this task, may need it in the future, so why not". I do have several other chief tools, purchased for specific projects, that sit until I need them again (infrequently) and they're just fine.

@@anon58973 well I’ve had my snap on air hammer rebuilt a couple times but I use it every day so just cause it’s a simple design doesn’t mean it doesn’t wear out if it wears out in 6 months it ain’t worth it to me I can get a few years out of my snappy and before it needs a rebuild and the rebuild is cheap and fast, I doubt your gonna walk into the store get them to rebuild the chief or give you a kit to do it yourself. I think your thinking everyone is a hobbiest which is not the case for me hence why I said use for 6 months then let me know how it is

It’s really hard to test an air hammer because there’s not a real good way of showing how hard or fast it hits. Like this video the snap on had a fresh edge on a new chisel and threads to help hold it on the bolt. The Chief fought a blunt edge and no threads ..... but it shows it can compete even with those against it.

We were trying to drive out kingpins from the forklift at work... using heat and good old hammer and punch, wasn't budging those kingpins... I recommend the chief air hammer to the boss man so he sent me to go grab one.. the price went up to $139 and Harbor freight didn't have any accessories (hammer, chisel). Ended up getting an 8 inch hammer bit from Matco. I'll tell you, this chief air hammer is a beast !! It took a little bit of time but it drove them kingpins out 👍👍 for the price, compared to snap on.. can't be beat.. another great tool from Harbor Freight!!

Nicely done video, Clay! Got a question for you about the air hammers, after you put the chisel in the hammer. I was told not to push the trigger without the chisel against something because the chisel could come out, of course thats with the spring retainer instead of the quick change chuck. Of course I do the same thing you did holding the chisel when testing to insure it's installed correctly. Thanks for sharing....

It can also knock the end out of the gun if done too much. The hammer hits against the end of the barrel along with the chisel - not good! The test would have been better with fresh bits, or sharpened bits in each tool. That, or using a hammer bit, or a ball joint splitter. It was good of him to do the comparison.

Mr Clay, I used the big chief a bunch the last two days breaking some welds on our shop gate and I had to bust the head and nut off a stainless 5/8 bolt (not the head size, a real 5/8 x 11 bolt on a stuck conveyor shaft. The hammer is solid, it survived an air line full of water and a couple knuckleheads at the controls. The trick is to use a real Mayhew chisel. The chief brand are ok but you run back to the grinder about 3:1 vs a USA made part. Thanks for the review, I normally buy Astro but didn’t want to be stuck using an oddball .498 shank chisel. Tool junkie that I am, I may buy the Astro anyway 😁

I think that the price point is going to get it in the hands of a lot of people. Also the warranty for the Chief and how many times you'll have to use it. Great test Clay my only downside was not giving the Chief a sharp bit on the bolt cutting test. I think it would have done it just as fast. Mac used to make a devastating air in the 90's that was so strong it destroyed itself if you weren't careful. I'm trying to remember the p/n but I think it was a PH8060 with the 4" barrel and you could feel how much more power it had over the snap on. I regret getting rid of mine. I had more problems with destroying my bits then the gun. But they changed it and the newer design wasn't as badass. Interesting vid though let's see how it holds up oh and what was the warranty on it? That's something to consider in the mix....

Our engine guy was using his snap-on air hammer a while back to knock out some frame rivets on a 2500, and after a while of slow progress he asked to try my matco since it was only about a month old then, and it knocked em right out. He said he would get one if he wasnt planning on retiring in about a year haha.

Tighten your vise I can’t stand watching it move side to side. Get a pointed bit and a 3/4 plate of steel and drive it in. Fresh bit first each. The flattened bit hurt the chief on the bolt vs the fresh cutting edge the snap on had. Then it was flattened worse and hurt the snap on on the rebar test. Not an easy too to test but you should use a fresh bit on each top on each test and make a guide to hold the bit from slipping off
