Chicken Plucker: What is causing it not to spin

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It is that time of year when we harvest our Cornish chickens. And to our dismay, the chicken plucker was not working. Follow along as Hon does some trouble shooting and get it working again just in time for harvest.

Ours did the same thing we took of the gfic plug and put a replacement 3 prong plug on and it fired right up. Wish we new we could have saved the money on the capacitor but we have a extra now. The reset breaker on the gfic plug was the hole problem with not starting up

Found out earlier this year the entire problem is the seal at the bottom of the plucker under the disc. It didn't seal filling the gearbox with water and then filling the motor internals with water. I could barely get the stator out of the motor itself it is so rusted. Before our next harvest I'm going ro build a plucker. Amazon one is junk.

This happened to me. replaced the cap, and finally took the motor assembly apart. Totally corroded after 4 uses. I am very disappointed with the company. I am thinking that maybe a bench grinder will work as a replacement.

When the motor finally quits I'll probably scavenge what I can of this one and do a barrel style where the motor is mounted off to the side and use a washing machine motor.

I am having the same trouble. Have you figured out why it clatters? Mine was doing that when it would turn. It has plucked hundreds of birds, so, has had some hard use, but would like to keep it going a little while longer.

The problem with ours was the seal on the top of the gearbox under the disc leaks water that in turn collects in the gearbox and inside the motor.

would it be using a start or a run capacitor? (help is appreciated) I have been trying to fix one of these for the past week now. so far I've replaced the obvious that was clearly wrong such as the main switch which one of the connectors had been broken off and a couple wire connections which were corroded and I even attempted to replace the capacitor but I had ordered the wrong capacitor. I got a capacitor with matching specs to the one that was already in the machine which was a 60uf 250v capacitor but I was unable to determine whether it was a start or run capacitor so I got a run capacitor being that they're more common. but the machine still sits there and hums and even manually spinning will not get it to start.

If manually spinning doesn't get it running with either a run or start capacitor, then you've got something else going on. Unfortunately, based on what you said above, it sounds like your motor has become weak, or your gear box has too much drag for the motor to spin it. Since you said you had corrosion in the wiring, that usually means you have corrosion in the motor. If you have the same amazon plucker as ours, then I'm leaning towards building a new plucker. I have not been impressed with the quality of our plucker. Even though it's done 150 chickens now, I highly doubt we're going to get to 300. It's definitely a case of you get what you pay for, and we paid for a "made in china". I'm sure in the next year or 2 we're going to strip ours for parts and rebuild it with better components. Wish I could have given you better news but I hope it gives you a direction to go and please let us know what you find.

@@southernyankeehomestead3230 thanks for the reply! yeah that night I tested a few other components and came to the conclusion the motor was bad. I may go as far as stripping the motor down but I don't believe these are easy to disassemble.

@levi strnad they are easy to strip down, but finding parts and getting them back together is an exercise in futility. I've done it a few times and only trip motors now to separate the metals for recycling.

What’s the name of the circuit breaker. I need to order one for mine

The number should be on the side of the breaker. It will be listed with voltage, and amp rating... So for example 240VAC 5A. that would be 240 Volts Alternating Current at 5 Amp. Once you have those numbers you can plug that into Amazon. A quick check for 5 amp circuit breaker on Amazon had several possibilities and I can't recommend a specific one because I don't know your specific plucker.

It sounds like your bearings or the motor has gotten tired/wet/corroded. The only other thing I can think of is to pull the rotating plate off and see if there's any feathers wrapped around the shaft binding it up.

Too late for this advice now but before using this type of plucker, put a diverter pipe on discharge to a perforated bucket no moisture to motor anymore.. if replacing motor offset motor from machine using belt and pulley. IMO putting motor right at discharge is a horrible design!

Well it is in the planning phase for the next one to do just that. Once this one no longer spins we will be robbing its carcass to build an improved one.
