Chicken Heart (Plawv Qaib) - Hmong Short Film

Фильм және анимация

Chicken Heart - Written and Directed by Hau Sij-hawm Yang
(Qiab Plawv) - Short film
Would you ever date someone if they had the same last name as you? Knowing full well that it is taboo within you're culture, facing the reality of being disowned, and leaving your family for the one you love. You hope that one day it will all be okay, but sometimes it never does. Is losing everything really worth it? Would you rather choose an easy life without them, or suffer the hardships and pain in a life with them?
Chicken Heart - Hmong Short Film is a modern take on the topic of some Hmong taboos. Although there are many taboos within the Hmong culture, this short film only shows two common taboos which are, same last name relationships/marriage, and the common belief that Hmong men with the last name Yang may never eat hearts of any sort or else they will go blind, death, and/or mute. This belief is due to the Yang clans past ancestors whom committed a horrendous act of murder on a death and mute man many years ago.

I don't get it with Hmong culture...it's wrong to date someone of your same last name (who might not even be related to you), but it's okay to marry your blood related 1st cousin (which is illegal in the United States)?!!!

For those who don't understand about the same last name thing. Just ask yourself this question, why do we have the same last name even though we r not related by blood. Too many decades ago, we all scattered to many places, we don't know the true story but please respect each other as if the same last names r all from the same dad.

Yet we have the same surname as the Chinese or Korean yet we don't identify as either. Moreover, a majority of Hmong choose not to identify as Chinese/Miaozu yet continue to have their surname.

Great portrayal of a contemporary conflict in the Hmong community. I just want to correct the pronoun in the dialogue "peb" (you plus 2 or more) to "wb" (strictly you and another person). Also, nouns are usually before adjectives. So it'll be "plawv qaib." Overall, incredible job!!

I’m glad to see this reality exist within the Hmong community. I’m aware of the same surname prohibition but I’m against this unwritten rule of couples dating someone of the same surname even when there’s no familial relation between the two families. This is one aspect within the hmong culture that needs to change. It’s better to have our hmongs marry and stick together than have them marry off to some other race of people especially those who are not hmong. That guy should’ve man up and marry her and taker her with him. I see this depicted in a film and it just angers me. We’re the same ethnic group of people but the custom oppose their own Hmong people yet it allows a different ethnic race to marry a hmong person. I can understand this guy’s sorrow having to dump her. I agree with that guy calling him a chicken as he should’ve man up and marry her regardless of the opposition.

Yes and no. I would like to because at least when we get married I don't have to worry about changing my last name. I mean feeling disowned hurts but I have to choose my own path and my own happiness I can't let my family control my life and control my happiness. It's my life and my choice. To me if it meant to losing everything I had I am willing to because I am with the person I love. I would like to suffer the hardship and pain in life with them.

This story was wrong when the title said chicken heart...I thought it was a movie about the yangs, actually the boys can’t eat the heart....if they eat they will go blind not taboo. Before do this movie they should asked the true..this story should called dating the same last name not chicken heart. I am a yang my parents told me that yang boys can’t eat chicken heart or they will go blind, but the yang girls can eat the heart, nothing wrong to the girls, not eating the heart to date or taboo. They should made two separated movies chicken heart and taboo are not the same. It didn’t make any sense since the beginning to the end.

Does it make sense if Hmong, we don’t care about our last name, if we could marry our same last name then it’s just the same we don’t have last name and it’s the same you trying to take our Hmong last name away. Have you ever heart or known there is a group of people any where on earth doesn’t have last name, if you do then please let me know, otherwise we are a little bit crazy for love when we still young but reputation means nothing to our future. Leadership only good or famous for better blood line. This is an acting or a movie but it could confuse our people specially the new generation. Our last name only can tell who we are, if you love Hmong or love yourself as a Hmong then do not destroy our only best we known.

Chicken heart is a supernatural taboo. Marrying your last name is a relationship taboo that brings embarrassment to your family. Like pointing to the moon and get your ear cut comparing to sleeping with your mom or dad. Two different thing.

Sorry to say from a Yang family. But this video makes no sense. Why we don’t eat heart is not because of taboo. I’m a little offended by the mean of this video. Why because this tells me that this younger generation don’t know about their culture. Other than that great movie and acting bravo.

Hmong Yang people have a taboo about eating the heart. They say it has a curse on the Yang family that can make them go blind. From my understanding it came from a story where a mentally handicapped kid accidentally ate the heart of his father or something, mistaking it for a pigs heart. That person then went blind through heaven's curse or something like that. Since then, the Yangs from this line created the taboo of not eating the heart. --- something like that.. it's been a long time since I heard this story... prob got parts of it wrong.. but that's the jist of it.

this topic is stupid it's not just about taboo. the main reason you don't marry your own last name is to try to keep from inbreeding. why is there a question about it? do it if your life depends on it but know that your kids are put in the high category of defects. you might as well marry your brother or sister while you're at it.

Props for trying to make a film but PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE MAKING A FILM. When you're hmong, you can not date and marry your own last name. It is taboo and considered incest to the eyes of Hmong. Its a simple rule and there are and is many people out there for you to date and marry. Honestly this film should of gone a different direction or should of have been more directly stated that dating and marrying same last name is a no no. Ive seen it in real life of same last name getting together and marrying the U.S. law way. It is very awkward for both family involved because they dont know what to call each other. Some and or most families disown and cut off ties of their own children because of this. This film is a little bit confusing, storyline wise and message wise.
