Chicken Cafreal from Goa (Herbaceous, and spicy!)

I love exploring regional Indian cuisine and dishes that don't appear on mainstream restaurant menus as often.
This Chicken Cafreal (originating from Portuguese colonies in Africa, and later brought over to Goa) features tender chicken braised in a herbaceous, spicy, and tangy green sauce that will have you licking your fingers!
Perfect served with roast potatoes or a side of French fries :)
INGREDIENTS
4 skinless chicken thighs
4 skinless chicken drumsticks
3 cups fresh coriander (stems and leaves)
3 inches fresh ginger, sliced
8 cloves garlic
2 Thai green chilis
5 cloves
1 tbsp coriander seeds
2 tsp black peppercorns
2 tsp cumin seeds
2 inch cinnamon stick
Juice of 1 large lemon
Salt to taste
¼ cup canola oil
1 cup water
METHOD
Cut 2-3 slits on each piece of chicken and set aside.
To a blender add coriander, ginger, garlic, Thai chilis, cloves, coriander seed, black peppercorn, cumin, cinnamon, lemon juice, and salt to taste. Blend until smooth.
Pour marinade over chicken, and mix to coat. Marinate in the fridge for 3-4 hours.
Add oil to a large wok/frying pan on medium-high heat. Once hot, add a few pieces of chicken to the pan at a time, ensuring not to crowd the pan. Brown for 3-4 minutes on each side, and transfer to a bowl. At this point, the chicken doesn’t have to be cooked through.
Add any remaining marinade to the pan, and cook for 3-4 minutes. Then add in water and bring to a simmer. Lower in chicken pieces, and baste with sauce.
Simmer for 20-25 minutes or until the gravy reduces and the chicken is completely cooked through.
Serve with potato wedges or french fries and a wedge of lemon. Enjoy!

    Hi Vijaya, adding on to your comment in the video when you talked up the idea of finding and promoting local Indian recipes....I came across a dish a short while ago that I'd never heard of: Chicken Chettinad. I looked it up (at other, far inferior cooking sites of course!) and found that the Chettinad seems to have everything in it except the kitchen sink. Furthermore, since it seems to be South Indian, perhaps we should look forward to your tackling this dish soon! By the way, for full disclosure I haven't yet made your Cafreal. OTOH, I HAVE made others in your repertoire....keep up the good work!👍

    Yes it's very good. I only put one pepper in cause i don't like it too hot. But i loved it.

    I just love your videos. For me, I dont know why seared cilantro just kills me. I tried an asada recipe with cilantro marinade and I about died when it hit the pan. We enjoy your recipes a couple times a week and always have yogurt and spices on hand. I wish you and your family well.
