Chicago Central & Pacific, Crandic, DM&E, GB&W: Midwest Railroading in the 1980s and 1990s
C. Vision Productions takes you back to the 1980s and 1990s to view trains on four Midwest regional and shortline railroads from the camera of videographer Bob Rivard. Starting on the Chicago Central & Pacific, you’ll see the railroad’s ragtag fleet of first and second-generation EMD “geeps”, many of which being “Paducahbilt” GP8 and GP10 locomotives of ICG heritage. Other locomotives seen include CC&P’s red GP38s, along with former Milwaukee Road GP20 rebuilds. We’ll cover the CC&P over the rolling landscape of the Corn Belt between Galena, Illinois and Hinton, Iowa. Next, we head to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to cover the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway. Affectionately known as the “Crandic”, this railroad operated a small group of GP9s and EMD switchers before their locomotive fleet was upgraded. Next, the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern gets into the act, with classic GP9, SD7, SD9, and SD10 locomotives. These units came to the DM&E very early in the railroad’s existence, with many still wearing colors of the Chicago & North Western, Milwaukee Road, and Norfolk & Western. Finally, we head to Wisconsin to see the Alco-powered Green Bay & Western Railroad. Yard switching, road trains, and even a cab ride aboard GBW C424 321, are featured in this segment. As a special treat, we view the operations of the SS City of Midland 41 railroad car ferry, including a journey aboard the vessel across Lake Michigan between Kewaunee, Wisconsin and Ludington, Michigan.

The 80's/90's was a true renaissance of regional railroads in the US

I lived in Rochester Minnesota from 1981 to 1995 and it was interesting to watch the DM&E grow from the ground up with hand me down locomotives that were eventually painted DM&E blue and yellow. In the early 1990’s there was a derailment east of Rochester immediately west of the RR bridge where highway 14 does an S turn crossing under the tracks. I took a day off from my lawn service to watch the cleanup. The crew didn’t like being watched.
I really liked the DM&E and the ALCo diesels on the GB&W! It was great watching an RS-27 smoke it up!
I'm from Green Bay Wi, sure miss the Alcos. Surprised to see ex Milwaukee Road units still working after the Soo got them, the Milwaukee ran them hard and had minimal upkeep.

One Alco from the Green Bay and western currently resides at the Illinois railroad museum. I believe it is an RSD15 I could be wrong.
I forget which Railroad bought out the Chicago central and pacific railroad What I love about it is it bright red paint scheme and their logo is their own version of the Illinois central green diamond talk about staying true to the heritage of the line it operates on but I do not know what class one Railroad bought out this regional short line if anyone knows comment down below
