Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Vol. 3, The PRC & Black Hills: DM&E’s Beautiful West End

Ойын-сауық

In our final edition of Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern coverage, C. Vision's cameras take you to the far west end of the DM&E system. Beginning in Pierre, we immediately cross the Missouri River to cover the remaining miles of DM&E's mainline to Rapid City, over the infamous PRC Subdivision. Trains are seen traveling through the isolated, scenic area along the Bad River between Fort Pierre and Midland, climbing the steep grade of Wall Hill, and traveling through the beautiful Cheyenne River Valley, near Wasta. Next, we will take a brief look at a portion of the old "Cowboy Line", between Chadron and Crawford, Nebraska, now being operated by the Nebraska Northwestern Railroad. Last, but certainly not least, we will explore the Black Hills Subdivision from Dakota Junction, Nebraska to Colony, Wyoming. While in South Dakota, this route follows the eastern edge of the Black Hills from one end to the other, making it one of the most scenic stretches of railroad in the state. Bentonite is this railroad's lifeblood, and we see many trains of the heavy clay operating across the hilly terrain of western South Dakota. You won’t be disappointed in the variety of motive power assigned to these trains, as locomotive models GP7, GP9, SD7, SD9, SD10, GP38-3, GP40, GP50, SD40 (SD40-3), SD40-2, and SD60 are all seen in service. With coverage beginning in 1991, and extending into the Canadian Pacific era, this program brings you the complete DM&E story, showcasing the many changes that have occurred since the railroad came into existence in 1986. As an added bonus, a brief look at C&NW operations in the Black Hills is also included.

Thank you for sharing, Chris! The MRC and then the PRC always have my imagination as we travel west on I--90 for vacations and other events in Rapid City. Such beautiful scenery and now historic trains you have documented here. My favorite era on the DM&E was the late rainbow era when the SD9s and SD10s were still running, along with the ex-MILW SD40-2s. A few shots of them here. Thank you!!!

You’re very welcome. It was great to be able to showcase several different eras on the DM&E (and CNW) in this video. And we were able to collaborate with multiple videographers to create this show. The PRC and MRC are both fascinating pieces of railroad. If only the Milwaukee was still in place west of Kadoka… Thank you very much for the comment.

It absolutely was! That’s the Pierre Inn & Suites. There is plenty of lodging available along the tracks in Pierre. If you’re ever in the area, we’d highly recommend spending a night or two in South Dakota’s capital city. Thank you for the comment.

Wow! Thank you for telling me about this! I am a huge trainspotter and nothing would thrill more than to have trains go by me that close to where I live or lodge! May I ask when was the last time you stayed there was? And are they affordable for a budget-minded traveler such as myself? And what city and state was this so I can search for them on their website? Thank you again!@@CVisionProductions1

That would be Pierre, South Dakota. And yes, they are generally affordable. Although, prices have increased over the past few years. While filming our DM&E and RCPE programs, we stayed in Pierre often. That was several years ago. We’d recommend exploring your hotel options before visiting, as there are many to choose from.

I wonder if all those old Consolidated Paper boxcars and other wood chip cars ended up at the Consolidated Paper mill in Wisconsin Rapids? I’m sure most of that bentonite found it’s way going to Winona-Adams-Butler-Chicago.

Those Consolidated boxcars more than likely did end up in Wisconsin Rapids. And you are correct on the bentonite routing. The routing for that traffic is much different today, as we’re sure you may have guessed. Thank you for the comment!

Ahh... the classic won't MU well, pull the plug and operate the power independently. Have had to that on the DSRC many times... Also have stalled only to try again in a lower throttle and walk right out and up the grade.

Ahhhh, yes. The stall scene at Spring Creek. That leader was definitely the only one putting power to the rail as they approached. The crew knew exactly what to do, as they were moving almost immediately. It also appeared that the power was being operated separately on that 470 being pulled up Wall Hill by 471. Thank you for sharing your direct experiences with similar situations.

In all the Videos 1-3 plus Cowboy line Video What was those Box cars used for? Don't seem like they were used for general merchandise to me it look like they were used as hoppers cars or gondolas.

We’re guessing you were seeing boxcars (with doors open or removed) that were utilized to transport woodchips from the Black Hills. The woodchips were contained using makeshift paper doors. You may also have seen boxcars (doors closed) that were carrying bagged bentonite. It was once common to see bentonite being transported in open-top hoppers, but that is no longer the case in the modern era. Today, most bentonite moves in covered hoppers, but there are exceptions.

Seems like the entire DM&E line is restricted to 10mph, reminiscent of the ol’ Milwaukee Road western rail!

Much of the DM&E was 10 mph, especially in the railroad’s early days. Today, these lines are a mix of 10, 25, and 40 mph track.

Those are woodchip boxcars cycling between Whitewood, South Dakota and Consolidated Papers in Wisconsin. They were painted and lettered for Consolidated. By the time we captured them, they were nearing the end of their lives. Thank you for your inquiry.

Yes, things were a little rough out there. In total, there was over 200 miles of permanent 10 mph track on the west end of the DM&E right up until the railroad was sold to the CP. And there wasn’t much improvement under the Canadian Pacific flag. RCPE has made quite a bit of progress in upgrading the track, but they still have a long way to go. Thanks for watching.
