Chicago Bulls - New York Knicks | 1993 Playoffs | ECF Game 2: The Struggle within

Спорт

It was a typical Knicks' playoff victory, with drama, sensational defense, and physical play that led to ejections and heated emotions.
The Chicago Bulls mounted a furious comeback, but New York made a game-winning stand in the final minute. John Starks made a spectacular driving, left-handed dunk that energized the crowd and his teammates. Charles Oakley dominated both backboards and made clutch free throws. And the Knicks remained masters of Madison Square Garden, where they have won 27 consecutive games.
Taking another step toward dethroning the two-time NBA champions, the Knicks outwilled the Bulls, 96-91, in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference championship series last night. The victory gave New York a two-games-to-none lead in the four-of-seven-game series. And it gave the Bulls plenty to think about before the series shifts to Chicago for Game 3 on Saturday afternoon.
Once again, the Knicks' frontline dominated, outrebounding the Bulls, 45-34. Once again, Michael Jordan (36 points, 12-for-32 shooting) faded late in the game, shooting just 5 for 16 in the second half after a 25-point first half. And once again, New York's multi-dimensional defense controlled the Bulls' two-dimensional offense of Jordan and Scottie Pippen (17 points).
"We had a 14-point lead, they came back, but we weathered the storm," said Knicks Coach Pat Riley. "We're up 2-0 going to Chicago, and that's what we wanted. I think our team's confident. We held service, now the pressure does revert to them. We're going to have go into Chicago strong, but we did what we had to do at home."
Then Starks made his memorable dunk. Ewing set the pick on B. J. Armstrong that freed Starks on the right baseline. Starks put his head down and went to the basket, where Horace Grant came over to try and help. Starks didn't care. He took off, a la Jordan, and threw in a ferocious left-handed slam dunk that will be replayed on newscasts for days to come.
"I saw the opening and there was nobody in the lane," said Starks, who did another superb defensive job on Jordan in the second half. "I went up hard, in case I got fouled, and dunked it."
Not only did the Bulls lose the game, they lost their poise. Pippen, Chicago's all-star forward, was ejected with 7:34 left for throwing the ball at referee Bill Oakes after being called for a double-dribble. First Pippen held the ball after the call, then he tossed the ball at Oakes in disgust. An outraged Oakes ejected Pippen immediately.
Yet the Bulls mounted a late rally, which included a bizarre play on which New York point guard Greg Anthony was ejected for committing a flagrant foul against Jordan. It happened with 4:16 left in the game, when Jordan drove to the basket and was met by Anthony, who hacked Jordan hard in the head with his left arm. The blow did not knock Jordan off his feet, but it was enough to send Anthony to the locker room.
"I thought that was totally uncalled for, and if I had my chance, I would've retaliated," Jordan said of Anthony's play. "But I didn't want to get kicked out of the game."
Anthony saw the play differently.
"I didn't think it was warranted," Anthony said. "If you see a replay, you'll feel the same way. It was a hard foul, but I can't allow him to just go ahead and shoot a layup."
Whatever the Knicks did at halftime, or whatever Riley said, should be bottled and saved for the next time New York needs it. New York' attitude starting the third quarter was ferocious, and they went on a 22-8 run to turn a 51-49 deficit just after halftime into a 71-57 lead. A Jordan Showcase
A scintillating first half ended with the score tied at 49. Jordan showed his entire arsenal early, scoring 25 points by intermission. At times, it was spectacular. Jordan's best move of the half came on a driving layup when he glided past Doc Rivers, hung in midair between Patrick Ewing and Charles Oakley, then kissed the ball softly off the glass. Jordan approached this like it was Game 7, and his reasoning was simple.
"We have to break through on their homecourt sometime to win this series," Jordan said before the game. "The sooner, the better."
But the Bulls did not break through. Now the Knicks are in control, and the Bulls are in trouble.

The desire of both teams was incredible. The Bulls were just better enough. Both teams were well coached, played good fundamentals. While Scottie Pippen was an All Star level player at this time, he wasn't fully blossomed, in my opinion, until the following year when Jordan was retired.

Thought knicks should’ve had them this year, last minute of game 5 was the decided of the series. I don’t think Jordan would’ve won a game 7 at MSG. This was the one year Jordan shouldn’t have won the title the weakest Bulls team of the 90s to the win the title. It would have been a great finals also between the Knicks and Barkley’s suns.

@@vijaydanushkodi4980 The 93 team was one of the stronger Bulls' teams. Their playoff run was probably the third best after 91 and 96, especially on the road as they went 7-2. The only thing made them weaker was the fact they were the only championship team that didn't win 60 games, and that was mainly due to the Bulls' being bored with the regular season and wanting the playoffs to start. But outside of that, they were supremely talented and everyone was in their prime.

The league once upon a time would let the players play tough physical style basketball. And the players back then understood their responsibility of keeping tempers under control. Then the Detroit bad boys screwed it up for everyone by starting insane boxing 🥊 ring fights. That forced the NBA to crack down to such a severe degree that now you can't touch anyone without getting called for a foul. Sad but true

Now I view the league as having a lot of kids in it, they don't seem like grown-ass men like the ones here. I'm tired of the posturing and jumping around and trying to impress your homies instead of being hard nosed and proffessional. This is REAL basketball. Listen to the crowd, the intensity; its like a tsunami of noise and passion. Even the console games now aren't as fun.

He did! From a casual fan/ retrospective standpoint it's hard to see. But Ewing was just a center, centers need more help than guards. Specifically, the best guard ever. These Bulls drafted people who were not "valuable" at the time. At least not chased hard by other teams. But they knew their roles. It only proves just how much Jordan raised the level of his teammates. The Knicks biggest problem was their emotional dysfunction under pressure. You can see it in Greg Anthony, Starks, Smith, etc. This is why they kept missing a majority of free throws. But who do the Bulls have to stop you up the middle? Will Perdue? Old Bill Cartwright? They later beat the Bulls without Jordan...which proves the commentators point. Which means they were the better TEAM. But Jordan is ALWAYS the x-factor .

That's true. Think about it. Don't confuse the 2nd 3peat with the 1st. 1st 3peat he didn't have much help. Look at this game here - Pip contributes only on D, meanwhile King Grant and Cartwright were "invisible." If you grew up in the MJ era, surely you know this.

They made the defensive rules to help newer perimeter players achieve the same things MJ did by giving them much easier conditions. If he played now, it would be insane. Not just him but half of the players on these Knick and Bulls teams would crush the game today. I think Anthony Mason here would give LBJ a hard time defensively and he would score so easily on today's midgets.

The NBA has not been nearly as exciting since the 80s & 90s. Thank goodness for throw back players like Curry and LeBron. They would be Great in any era.

IF JORDAN PLAY IN THIS ERA (2018) HE WOULD AVERAGE 60 PTS A GAME , there's no way he could be stopped in today NBA , Silly fouls and techs would send jordan to the Line 20 times a game, his moves and aggressiveness would be too much for much of thses drama queens and baies NBA players , jordan got the ball , foul ! jordan to the basket , foul ! jordan fade away , foul ! today NBA its full of cry babies , that moch of them def could have played in the 90s but they would have been regular NBA players

it is more about the players and the team play other than certain nostalgic factors for me to like a team. i live in LA area and i have encountered so many blind lakers fans that really know nothing about basketball. but yea, they are annoying in a different way in related to the kobe kiddies.

Jordan's strength came from his great core power. That's why he was so explosive, in addition to a high degree of fast twitch muscle. Notice, no one has ever attempted to do Jordan's "rock the cradle" dunk in a game because you need 1)large hands 2)great leaping ability 3)an extremely powerful core because it's basically a wind up and explosion. Lebron and Kobe have never attempted it because they know they will make fools of themselves. Vince Carter even admitted he tried it & couldn't do it.

@etherodromos that was game 3 and the reason they tossed Starks was because it was his 2nd technical, and only Jordan's 1st technical. that's WHY he was ejected & Jordan wasn't

i feel like as good as marion may be, he would hurt the cavs. wally can hit big shots from the perimeter, whil varajao can get a bunch of rebounds and plays so well with lbj.

First off, I'd like to say thanks to KOrOne79 for this epic game, that's why I subscribe to your videos lol! I'd also like to add that I've been reading some of these comments and I will admit that I am a KB fan, but some of the comments from some of the Laker fans are ridiculous. To me, MJ is the GOAT, and this video was proof of his toughness. I must also add that I may be one of the only ppl here on youtube who can claim to be a MJ AND KB fan at the same time (yes, it's possible) LOL!

I wonder what would happen if Mark Jackson and Xavier McDaniel stayed with the Knicks after 92 series. They would help on beating the Bulls in 93. Pippen is afraid of the X-Man. Of course we would never know that now.

wow!! we heard it from johnny "hoop" andreis: "ewing has more help than jordan does" that tells you the greatness of jordan who wasn't suppose to be a good as he became, who wasn't suppose to dominate as he did because of he was "only" a guard. jordan did what no other guard has ever done....lead his team to championships after chapmpionships without a dominant man in the middle and without a true point guard.
