The $820 one is good enough for me. Nice sized and you can even turn that little dressing room next to the bathroom into a bedroom. Plus the neighborhood is nice and clean and quiet, that's what you mostly pay for, the location. It's good to keep on the low end of your budget as long as it is comfortable for you because if you can be happy with less room and paying less, you will always be happy as you progress in your career because you'll have more spending money rather than spending it on housing.

No way. The $1250 one bedroom is the way to go. It is less money per square foot, and it has a pool. Large living spaces, thick soundproof walls, natural light (meaning windows), gas stoves, hardwood floors, outdoor spaces (like a porch), proximity to stores & restaurants & public transportation, plus Pools & Fireplaces make life really good.

I live in East Rogers Park. It is the absolute best neighborhood. The parking isn’t horrible and it is the most diverse neighborhood in the city. The lake is at my back door, lots of stuff to do and you can be downtown in 25 minutes.

I lived over the North Side ( Roger's Park ) when I first moved to Chicago in 2019. The North Side has alot of relatively cheap and big apartments ( mine was a 1 bedroom, 900 square ft for 975 bucks.) It's nice looking over the North Side but the vibe sucks. Neighbors who don't speak, the looks, and just the overall vibe wasn't welcoming to me as an Afro-American. I bought my home over the South Side after staying up there for a year and I love it! It's good to be back in a neighborhood with friendly neighbors and a good welcoming vibe. Yes you may find a "cheap" apartment, but the microagressions and culture shock and even attitudes from the Blacks who do live up there ( got sick of hearing, " oh we don't go to the South Side ), isn't worth it. Please try to find an apt in Hyde Park.

That’s interesting. I’ve lived in Rogers Park since 2011 and have had no bad experiences with racism or micro aggressions. It’s really mixed with a heavy African population and everyone is really friendly with everyone. The only issues I’m having is the alcoholic and bums with no jobs that like to loiter around and beg for money every time they see you lol

@@thechigirl2498 great that your experience has been different there, however I could recount many in just the short year that I was there . The beauty of life is that two people in the same place can still see and experience it differently. Maybe the fact that I'm a 6'5 Black man with a hulking statute afforded me the not so " friendly" and welcoming vibe that you receive when I would walk the neighborhood with my dog and my normal Southern affinity to greet was met with stares and sometimes people crossing the street. Maybe I just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, when I heard two white guys yell the "N" word from their car to a fellow Afro-American driver in front of my apartment building. Oh well, I guess we both see/saw two different sides of the same place because I mean in the same vain, I didn't encounter the bums with no jobs and alcoholic panhandlers ( well except at Howard Street station) LOL.

I moved there in April and I'm right by the beach. It's nice, but the parking availability is absolutely non existent, and I've gotten several parking tickets because of this reason. Also, the old buildings come with mice and no matter how clean you are or how many holes you seal they still manage to get in. There are alao a lot of addicts and transients in Roger's Park as well. I'm definitely moving back to the west suburbs.

6:10 Listen, this is a dealbreaker for me. I once moved from Bed-Stuy to a less diverse neighborhood in Brooklyn. It wasn't even about the people but rather the culture. No restaurants where I could get Caribbean food. (Yes, there's DoorDash, Grubhub, etc, but sometimes you just wanna walk into the spot and get your meal!) The library didn't have a diverse selection of authors (vs lots of James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, etc in the one near me in Bed-Stuy). No Black houses of worship in the area (vs the Black church right down the street in Bed-Stuy). Long story short, I moved right back to Bed-Stuy ASAP lol. There was nothing the other neighborhood actively did to make me feel unwelcomed per se, but... everything in Bed-Stuy screamed "I love your Blackness!"

I've been looking for apartments for ages in chicago. My advice is get a job that pays way more then minimum wage of you expect to afford to live alone. Also if you want a nice apartment that's not the size of a shoebox or in a bad area find a trusting roommate because prices are ridiculous. One months rent while on minimum wage even in a studio is more than half of your monthly income

My advice for the parking situation especially in the areas you're looking at is to either get rid of your car or keep it in a different neighborhood. No joke. I know things are different with the CTA during a pandemic, but I'm the before times I had a couple friends who would keep their cars at a friend's garage or parking spot and just use it for driving out of town out to areas CTA didn't cover. Wrigleyville gonna wrigleyville 🤷🏿‍♀️

The North Side is very diverse. I grew up on the South Side and moved to the North Side as an adult. Lived on the North for over a decade now. It’s actually more diverse than the South Side. I live in a neighborhood and building that has Latinos, Black people, Arab, White and Asian. I think the issue is that if you live in a predominantly black area and move somewhere where there are lots of other types of people it can feel jarring. And it’s also all about WHERE you live on the North Side. Wrigleyville is hella white. But Edgewater, Uptown, Rogers Park? Not so much.

I once lived a few blocks from Fenway Park in Boston, home of the Red Sox - and on game days I simply left my car in it's spot and took public transportation. Otherwise I could not have found a legal parking space when I returned. Easy-Peasy solution - and I Never had a Problem. Just hold onto your parking space like gold, and only use your car when absolutely necessary. Also, keep a folding chair in the trunk, so If you need to move your car for street cleaning, and if it's a safe neighborhood, do this late at night, scoping out an empty nearby spot and setting your chair in it for a minute to save it while you move your car. That's what we do in Chinatown, and it works. Unlike Boston, Lincoln Park is pretty much color-blind, so you will be a welcome sight there.

It's a bit lower if you are talking a one bedroom and stay away from these new high rises that have gone up in the last 7 years or so. With inflation the prices have gone up, but still. The village also gives you some protection from janky land lords. Most of them are are on the up and up but you get one or two that need to be gathered. Usually newer ones to the area that need a dose of how things are done here. They get gathered real quick.

Lots of black people on the Northside. It the price that will keep you away. Try Ravenswood, West Rogers Park, Andersonville. There are better prices and parking over there.

There's lots of diversity on the north side it's too bad you didn't see anyone of color but then again you were looking at places when most people are at work. I suggest you visit the neighborhoods that are appealing to you on the weekend or evenings to get a better idea of the area. Also where you were looking seems close to the lake and since there is plenty of space, lots of people seem to hangout there. Anyway happy apartment hunting.

I’ve lived in Lakeview. I couldn’t take it now I’m looking at either hyde park or argyle. Mostly high rises. Just subscribed. I’m from Bronzeville, but parking is shitty up north, periodt. Chicago is the most segregated city, which is good and bad. There are pros and cons to it. Omg! You guys walked past my gym, I think you’re on lakeshore and waveland.

Yall remind me of me and my wife when we were apartment/ house hunting. I like yall energy, so I have to keep it real with you. 1. Being coupled up in an apartment usually creates babies (idk if yall already have kids, but i feel like yall already subconsciously thinking about it while you're looking for "safe" neighborhoods. Do yourselves a favor and don't move into a studio. 2. Up north ain't for us. There are very few Black people. The few Black people you see will likely be homeless or they will be straight from the movie Get Out. There are few regular Black folks up north, but because everyone is busting their ass to pay high ass rent, your interactions will be limited and socializing will likely not happen. On the off chance that you do socialize with other Black folks, you will catch stares and more (police presence on weekends and after cubs games is ridiculous, and someway, somehow, in a sea of openly drunk white people, they will find a way to fuck with you). And it's unavoidable. There's no recognition or real acceptance of Black culture up north. No matter how many Black lives matter signs you see; no matter how many times they play hip hop and rnb at their bars; no matter how upstanding and brilliant you may be, your Blackness makes them uncomfortable. The only way they can be comfortable with Blackness is if you act like one of the characters from Get Out. For the love of God, don't submit yourselves to that type of treatment in the place that you live, and please don't bring yall current/ future babies up in some shit like that. 3. Unfortunately, there is barely any solid advice I can give you on what you could or should do. Rent is high everywhere 🤷🏿‍♂️. Idk if yall are in a position to pull this off, but what my wife and I did was buy a house on the north end of the Austin neighborhood (west side). The house was converted into a 2 flat. I moved my sister and niece in downstairs (being an actual landlord takes time and a lot more money, so I'd suggest renting to family or friends). Now we're splitting one mortgage payment of 1860 down the middle. 930 a month gets us a three bedroom with in-house laundry and a huge backyard. If you can pull off a similar two flat arrangement, I can testify that it is a definite steal compared to that bullshit they're trying to sell you up north.

I’m so sorry but where are you finding $800-$1200? I live in Irving park and I just got a place for $1250 2 bedroom. But it was a wild card. Right now all 2 beds are going for like 14-18k it’s insane. I had a good place in Lincoln square but the landlord kicked all the tenants out. The market is horrible right now

So this video randomly showed up on my feed. I live in Chicago and am pretty familiar with this area. I worked for an apartment finder service a long time ago and we did a lot of rentals for that guy who showed you the apartments on Pine Grove. (Not so) Fun fact: he was rumored to be a huge racist. So I hope you didn’t try to rent anything from him!
