The original Chicago is quite possibly the greatest collection of musicians ever assembled. Terry Kath, Robert Lamm, Peter Cetera, James Pankow, Danny Seraphine, Lee Loughnane & Walter Parazaider.

Just watched the documentary "History of ..." and holey smokes, talk about a blast from the past. I couldn't agree with you more - for some crazy reason I always thought the horn section was more than just the three of them. As of the date of this comment (Dec 2019), three of these boys are still going strong 52yrs later. Think about that for a minute

You are right. After Terry shredded that solo and song, the "Terry Kath!" call out seems like quite an understatement. I always find myself thinking, "Terry Kath, INDEED!". I just love that Tanglewood version. Hard to believe we're coming up on 50 years since that concert. Talk about "timeless" entertainment. Wonder what music from today they will still revere 50 years from now.

Glad you did 25 or 6 to 4. One of the classics. The reason Kel probably did not see it done live is This was when Terry Kath was the guitarist. I am surprised Rich did not mention the history of why Terry was not with the band later on. I cannot believe Rich does not know the story, I bet he does. Anyway, He was one of The Best Guitarist to come out of the 60s, 70s timeframe. Inventive, Innovative and could just play the crap out of his guitar. Thank you.

So, so glad you chose this particular live version! I had recommended it a while back. The reason Kel's experience paled in comparison, is that Terry Kath left us in '78. Others have already stated that he was lost due to a tragic accident with a gun - his own fault, sadly. He was a monster player. Many are not aware that no less than Jimi Hendrix considered Kath to be one of their favorite players. The Tanglewood concert is testament to Terry at his best. Love this video so much! Thanks, guys. :-)

I'm so glad you picked the Tanglewood version, if only to see Kel getting blown away by Terry Kath's singularly insane solo! Which, judging by her reaction, she most certainly was! The moment her jaw dropped open was the same moment mine did when l first watched this, that thousand mile an hour, fret burning fiery lick was too amazing to not be floored by it. And at the end of his finger blistering solo, l too, just like Kel, let out an involuntary "whew" of disbelief at what l'd just witnessed! Love you guys! Love that Kel!! Cheers!

Terry Kath (The guitar player) actually met a really sad end. Him and a lot of his band mates were sitting around and they were getting bored. Terry pulled out his gun and took the clip out forgetting there was one in the chamber. He then said “Watch this” put the gun against his head, pulled the trigger and accidentally blew his own brains out with his friends there watching. It was tragic and a great lesson on why you don’t play with guns.

In the late 60's the Turtles played at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario in their gym complex. A friend of mine from high school was on security. Asked him if I could get on the side of the stage somewhere to watch. He said I couldn't stay there for the Turtles but I could sit beside the drum cases at the side to watch the opening act. Finally this large group with horns came on stage and they weren't much older than I was i.e. I was about 19. I looked at a drum case and it said in stencil Daniel Seraphine, Chicago Transit Authority. What a tight band and watching Terry Kath on guitar was mesmerizing. Blew the Turtles out of the hall. Great memory.

1972 - 9th grade concert band and we performed this classic. As a baritone horn player, and along with all the low brass sections we had the driving rift that opens the song and pulses throughout. We had an electric guitar join in and we rocked the house. We thought we were so cool...AND we were. This song is forever a part of me. Thank you band director Mr. Simon. P.S. - Tanglewood is my fav.

I saw these guys live 1977 Solders Field in Chicago. It was the afternoon after my parents house started on fire. It was the Saturday night at the park tour. I only heard the 1st song and I past out on the 50 yard line of the football field and woke up for the last song of the concert. I was so tired, the fire woke (my Mom)me up at about 3 AM.

According to Terry Kath's widow, this song is about a time in the early morning when the band and their hangers on had been up all night jamming, drinking and doing cocaine. There comes a time when you wonder, as the lyric says, "should I try to do some more, 25 or 6 to 4:00". This is a song they wrote during a night of partying and jamming.

July 21, 1070 was about two months before Hendrix died. Terry Kath was one of the very few guitarists (then and now) that had the physical strength to emulate the sound that Hendrix had.

One of My Favorites songs growing up Rich!!! Well Done, You're steering the Princess properly!! The song's title is the time at which the song is set: 25 or 26 minutes before 4 am. Ignore every other interpetation as I heard that from Robert Lamm himself! Much Love as always from a Canadian in Romania, Alex.

My favorite song by Chicago! I got my dad to learn this many years ago. He's been playing the trumpet since he was fourteen years old. I guess he must have been somewhere in his 40's when he learned this. Even though it wasn't his type of music, he did it for me. He's 94 now, and still breaks his trumpet out and plays. His thing is big band music, and also loves Frank Sinatra. Anyway, I loved this!! :-)

Along with bands like the Mamas and the Papas, Crosby, Stills and Nash and many others, CTA had a house in Laurel Canyon in the Los Angeles area. They walked to each others homes and played or picked up riffs from each other. It was like a suburban bedroom studio session that went on for years. This song lyric is about trying to write a song and it is 330 (6 to 4) and 25 (5 minutes later) in the morning and still trying to get the lyrics on paper.

The thing you seemed to have missed, is that the solo Terry Kath played live at Tanglewood was completely different than the one on the studio recording, and both were absolute fire. IMHO, the whole Chicago II (which includes 25 or 6 to 4) is great. Give a listen to It Better End Soon for a real diverse musical treat in a shot.

Just a note. I caught an interview many years ago with the three horn players. They actually put the band together because they could not find any rock bands that want to use brass. But they had heard several Beatles songs using brass and whole orchestras. And decided why not us too. Of course they needed some great guitar and singer and drummer etc. Not surprising there was a bit of Beatles influence in there since that was what got them thinking that brass should be in a rock band.
