I love watching your videos so I joined to help support your adventures. I lived in Chiang Mai for a few months in 2018. I plan on coming back in July/August for a few months again. It was a wonderful city with lots of hustle and bustle at the time. Sad to see so many closed shops but it will bounce back. Try some fried chicken from the chicken man at Nimmana Haeminda Road 9, close to lotus express & SP Chicken at Samlan Rd Soi 1 in Old City. Rose's Roadhouse for western food was good too.. Those were a few of my go to places to eat. The monks trail up Doi Suthep to Wat Phra Lat is something I really enjoyed. It is quite a hike though. I suggest looking it up on Google to see if it might interest you. From what I remember there is a hidden temple half way up the trail but honestly I may be confusing that from another hike. Hope you enjoy your time in Northern Thailand I also found the heat to be really rough between 11:30AM - 4PM. I tried to avoid doing a lot outdoors during that time of day if I could.

Go for a hike at Doi Suthep national park, coffee at Ristr8to and do check out Bua Thong waterfall (also called sticky waterfall because the rocks are well sticky ). I was at Chiang Mai in 2019. Lovely place. Stay safe Ken . From Malaysia.

Been to Chiang Mai on 3 occasions. Must visit Doi Suthep up the mountain. There are many more temples on the way up. Maybe cooler there. Enjoyed your videos . Cheers.

I have been there... 7 years ago. Oh, it was bustling and the restaurants and bazaars there were usually packed. So sad to see most of them are closed now.

Tuk-tuk are a ripoff but it is essential for tourists who don't know where to go because they are your personal guides. If you know where to go, just take the 'Song Taew' which is the red bus, it will cost you only 20 baht for one short trip around the moat area but you have to share the bus with other people.

100 baht for TUKTUK is actually very reasonable. Song teaw is very cheap but it takes much longer since you have to go through all the stops with other passengers

@@tpitpitpi 100 baht is not reasonable for short ride. It's better to take Grab taxi for 100 baht with air-conditioner

The "little thing" is called the "moat". The Chiang Mai Gate is the one in the south. The eastern gate is the Thapae Gate. Looks like Ken found the road with the khoi san restaurant near the mosque near the night market. I think that's the same restaurant Mark Wiens visited. At 11:05, if Ken looked to the right that would have seen the big mosque near the Night Market. 😁 Covid or no covid, the night market is deserted during the day. There's usually a lot more people after 6pm or so. At the end of the video you are at the Chiang Mai Gate, and on Saturday evenings that location is the northern end of "Walking Street". Mainly touristy stuff but also all sorts of street food, and arts and crafts. Look for the little red stall selling Fish Maw Soup - the first year I was there the sign read "Fish Maw SOAP". It's sort of been corrected since then. A couple of things worth looking for are: animals (mainly elephants and dragons) made out of rope and little clay figurines of children which come in pairs. People put them on doorsteps, there was a pair at a drinks stand on the beach in the South in an earlier video (I made a comment about them). On Sundays there is a much bigger (and overwhelming) Walking Street in the middle of town. Pretty much the same stuff for sale, but look out for the guy selling handmade wooden and PVC Thai flutes from a cart. They're well made are actually in tune, unlike some you find elsewhere. It would be interesting to find out how the Walking Streets are faring these days. 17:00 - this is the OTHER kind of Thai sausage - it's full of herbs and lemongrass, and is made in a spiral. They sell the halal equivalents near the Khao SOI place earlier. The kind I like is different - it's fatter, with rice and glass noodles inside. You will find them every evening (the halal ones) at the night market at the Chang Phueak Gate on the north side.

If you are looking for clothes - one word - Warorot Market. It's fairly close to the Night Market. This is where the locals shop. Just tell the driver. The whole area around there is interesting. One of my favorites is an interesting wholesale toy store, if you want souvenirs. Lots of shops selling cloth.. there's a sort of locally made cloth that they use for all sorts of things, it's got interesting patterns. There's a shop to the west of Warorot, that sells straw items. A good souvenir from Chiang Mai is a straw hat. They kind of look like the English pith helmets ("topee") you see in old movies and you usually see mahouts wearing them. They're quite cheap, especially if you buy a half dozen. They make great gifts...

Wow I enjoyed this video so much! I last visited Chiangmai in 2008 and there were people all around the town, the streets, markets and everywhere, and it was so lively. Now it’s so quiet but the view along the moat is still beautiful and peaceful. The friendly vibes are unchanged. Your commentary and exchanges with people are pleasant and informative. I didn’t know Chiangmai has a 700-800 year history. Tuk-tuk, khao soi, fruit shake, Tapae Gate ... it was so nice to see Chaingmai in 2021. Enjoy your travel!

Hi, Ken..Thanks so much for the video. Is been 2 years I had not travel Chiang Mai. This indeed sad and shocking to view so many shops are closed at the busiest district in Chiang Mai. You are very fortunate you able to flag a tuk tuk. In Chiang Mai most tuk tuk are pick up vans convertible. God Bless you as always and do have pleasurable trips.

The official name for a waterway like that is called a ‘moat’. Normally found around a castle but in Chiang Mai it lines the old city.

Ohh i thought it like canals system like in Ayutthaya, maybe it was used for city defence in ancient time as Chiang Mai is considered close to Myanmar. Having moat around the city can give good defence.

Aaa...great that you manage to try khao soi and you like it. That aunty at the shop is very nice. Chiangmai, being a touristy area, was a bustling place before the pandemic. Now, it's rather very quiet. Oh gosh, still no luck for you to hunt for the 7-11 tshirt... don't give up hope. Ahh...remember this 'terusan'..(what, moat??) This was what Mat Saman of Kedah copied fr Siam ..even northern Perak built this kind of canals but smaller...along the trunk road.. First impressions of Cheingmai::pub, pub, pub all along the streets.. farang, farang drinking, backpackers' hotels...I was resorting to snacks to halal snacks & hot drinks from Lotus tesco from 7-11,,,for 3 days....Then, after asking around, moved to the big mosque area...many Muslim restuarants there, but mostly ethnic Chinese, not ethnic Malays like in the South...So I had the bests of two worlds...Muslim and Chinese. They say their (Muslim) ancestors came over from China.....

My strategy was markets in the morning, temples and tourist sites in daytime, and night markets in the evening. It's also nice to stroll along the big river east to the old city.

I think the tuk-tuk driver was very helpful. It was a good way to get an intro to the city. Certainly worth thinking of a route to do another tour that way!

mobility options in chiangmai : song teow 30B flat price any destination. rent a motorbike . rent electric scooterboard , rent bicycle , there is a bus system circling the city 30B flat price, some free busses operated by central shopping malls ...... never go for tuktuk

Thank u so much for the video, Ken. It answers my longing for the trip to Chiang Mai again. There are so many local markets to enjoy in this town. They were so lively before the pandemic. Weekend market is my fav one. Maya is my fav mall as well as Niman. There is a small market beside Maya mall that opens in the evening, but I don't know if it is still running during this pandemic or not. By the way Chiang Rai is also a recommended place. It has a weekend market at Thana Lai. This weekend market is great since it has a live music where you can join the locals to dance. But once again, I don"t know if it still goes like that or not, since the pandemic still there.

So nice to see you in my favourite place in the world. Make sure you go to further north go to normal tourist places and visit the Hall of Opium at Chiang Khong. North is super hot this time if the year. Best time to go is December to Feb. Now is burning season

I like how you request "Thai people only, no farang". Awesome! Another way I learn on how to eat like the locals, are by asking, "i'm hungry, take me where you go to eat everyday"

@@FoodandFootprints amazing Scooter trip, it's been really hit by the drop in tourists. Pai had a amazing walking night food street. Anyway we also shot out vlogs on a osmo pocket, looking at the osmo pocket 2 at buy when we get the chance. Our channel is For Riel, from Cambodia if you want a look. Ps we have a drinking game when Ken tells everyone he is 190cm. I'm 187cm, 130kg with a huge beard so I also stand out. Well I subscribed and hopefully will catch up one day.

Ken goes on a tuk-tuk ride . searching for local Thai food.... Coconut milk , chicken , noodles...... The closest thing the dish you are eating that i can relate to is Laksa ( in Malaysia ) but i can see some fusion and extra ingredients in in the mixed. The market looks pretty hot as you were perspiring. The hunt for the 7 Eleven t-shirt continues...LOL.. Stay safe, happy exploring.

I love the idea of hiring a tuktuk for a day in Thailand. I can't drive but I love the idea of exploring Thailand in a a tuktuk.

Nice and interesting vlog Ken. I love this kind of street videos where one can see the latest scenes of the city. Perhaps you can show us Mae Salong and Ban Rak Thai, which are 2 small hill stations near Chiang Mai that are inhabited by descendants of the Chinese nationalist soldiers. Both are famous places for the best Chinese tea and coffee grown in Thailand. A Cafe and Tea house vlog there would be wonderful. Keep up the good work and stay safe!

Good video. I envy you, Chiang Mai is my favourite City and it hurts to see it so empty. I think tuk-tuk driver is worth keeping in contact with, price was not so bad considering the circumstances. In past four years have stayed in Chiang Mai seven times. And yes, not a river, a protective `Moat`.

We visited Chiangmai Mai in March 2018 .. it was bustling with lots of tourists .. the night market was great .. can’t remember the sou but next to Hard Rock Cafe .. small pubs were friendly and had good music 😀 will definately visit again

Hi Ken, for khow soi gai try Garden Restaurant at the bottom of Loy Khro road on the left, wonderful. Also i recomend going to Mae Hong Son, its a lovely place in the mountains, stay by nongjonkhum lake its amazing, Pier bungalows are always my choice there, also you could stop of at Pai for a while on the way, enjoy your trip, loving your vlogs thanks.

Ken, I love that you put how much things cost in USD, but could you also put how much it is in Baht (or the local currency) so we can get a sense of what the exchange rate was at the time you make your purchase? That Chicken coconut curry looked awesome! Thanks for sharing!

What you called a river is actually a moat. It was digged up to protect the city from enemy. That why you see after the canal, there is a high wall (fortified) and the old city looks like square in Google Maps.

I was in Chiang Mai at the end of Jan 2020 and Bangkok during Chinese New Year 🧧 just before the pandemic. It wasn’t busy but certainly a good number of people in the Main Street market. There’s a fantastic elephant 🐘 rescue there that we bathed with elephants

Hi ken, from malaysia here. I miss chiang mai, 2013 i was there. Was travelling around thailand. Took train to chiang 22 hrs journey at 3rd class seater and was cheap around rm50++ Stayed there 2 weeks. U should come on december and january coz thats weather feel like cameron highland. I did mountainbiking there. Tiger temple visited. And stayed with orginial chiang mai people there... I miss chiang mai.... Weather on dec.jan. the people.. More chill and calm than phuket..

The shop Khao Soi Mae Sai is about the best one, close to the Kad Suan Keaw mall. The brick towers are called chedi, they are ancient temples all around Chiang Mai, the temple city.

I've often walked past it.. It's pretty busy when there's a band playing. There's a shop next to it selling T-shirts, and since it's at the Chang Phueak Gate that's where I often get off the Songtheaw to walk across the moat. There's an extremely funny sign a couple of shops down, it's a hardware store called "Nana Screw". You can see it on Street View.

@@iskandartaib haha. BTW I am from Bangladesh. I went to Chiang Mai in 2017 and I absolutely loved it. A bit laid back, very different from other conventional popular thai destinations.

Go to the north gate food market at night time as it”s usually popular with the locals. Also not very far is Santitham which has much more local vibe than the usual touristy spots in the old town.

The sausage you eat This is Northern Thai sausage in Thai called "Sai Oua", made from pork mixed with pork fat + curry paste and turmeric. Chiang Mai during the day is not much interesting. There will be only temples and attractions. But Chiang Mai will be lively and crowded in the morning. And evening - night. Especially on Saturday and Sunday there will be a walking street market. And various night markets open in many places Chiang Mai is famous for its morning markets, cafes and night markets. Street food restaurants at night rather than day. Na kub P'Ken🙏🙏😁😁

@@KenAbroad 6-8am Recommended markets are Warorot Market, Chang Puak Market, Gate Muang Market (the market where you go to walk in this video clip), 7-11 shirts in the shopee lazada app, if you stay for a long week, you can order in the app and send it to the accommodation. And as I suggested, you can see that the cost of the transportation is high. You can ride a tuk tuk in this clip for 250. You can go a few places but the price is the same as you rent a motorcycle for a full day. And the food of the North, especially Chiang Mai, there are many things that may be a little strange to you. Both raw buffalo salad. Grilled curry paste with pork brain, various curries, Thai food in all 4 regions will be different There is still a lot for you to try.😁😁

One absolute must see - it's the cutest thing you will ever see in Chiang Mai. On the north-west corner of the moat is the Chiang Mai Provincial Public Library. There is a fence around it, with several fence posts. On the posts are those clay figurines of children I mentioned earlier that you can buy at the Saturday Walking Street. Except these are painted, and most of them are sitting and reading. They're all different, too. It would be really interesting to see these on a KZread video. I saw them the first time I came to Chiang Mai - some years they need re-painting, some years the paint is fresh, but they're always really cute. You can see a few of these on Street View, but they're worth a closer look. Within a 10 minute walk of the library is an old, interesting mall called Kad Suan Kaew. It's so local that the English movies they show at their cineplex are all dubbed in Thai. It's supposedly haunted - there are entire areas within the mall that have been abandoned, sometimes people make videos of these abandoned places - supposedly there's a large auditorium with a stage, even. It's attached to a hotel (the Lotus) which is also a little weird. Once a week, at night (I think it's Thursday night) they have a "Blind Market" in front - it's essentially street food in the dark. Lots more interesting stuff near this area - the "upmarket trendy" part of Chiang Mai is called "Nimmanhaemin", lots of trendy little cafes and restaurants. Also some higher end condos and such as well. Might be some AirB&B's in the area. There's a mall to the northwest of the moat called Maya, I go there to watch movies. There are American movies that don't reach Malaysia (usually art movies), and there are some Japanese and Thai movies they show there. Don't forget - tomorrow is Friday, watch out for the special school uniforms. I don't think you'll see them elsewhere in Thailand - at least, not in Bangkok.

@@KenAbroad Yeah, I've been visiting once a year for a few years now. Usually right after Chinese New Year. Just remembered something about the MAYA mall - it's right on the northern edge of the city, so there's a fantastic view of Doi Suthep (the mountain to the north of Chiang Mai, with a temple at the top, where you can take a tour - songtheaws leave from the Chang Phueak Gate) if you go to the balcony in the back of the mall on the floor with the cineplex. The next floor up is only open in the evenings, it's an open air park with 3 or 4 restaurants and bars, usually with 3 or 4 different live music acts playing at one time (I don't think the farang tourists know about this place). I think they call it "Nimman Heights" or something of the sort (you can see Nimmanhaemin to the west). Anyhow, one day, when I got out of a movie (around 3pm) there was a huge crowd, mainly of teenagers, waiting in line at the escalator leading up to the open air floor. There were people handing out posters, souvenirs, etc. I asked what was going on. There's this girl singing group in Tokyo called AKB48 - they've got "sister groups" all over Asia - and there's one based in Chiang Mai, called CGM48 (you can look it up on Wikipedia). I happened to be there just before they were supposed to give a performance, or maybe it was just one of the singers (Sita) who was supposed to sign souvenirs. I didn't hang around long enough to find out, but I did end up with a poster and a free CD.. 😁 I remember the name of the singer because the big Siamese cat at the hotel I always stay at was also named Sita.. 😁 I think it's the name or a character in the Ramayana (or Ramakien, in Thailand). If you search for CGM48 on KZread there is one of their performances on the top floor of MAYA.

I’ve always considered khao soi to be an ‘upgraded’ laksa since it has the regular noodles and the crispy egg noodles 🤣 Yeah it’s sad to see that a lot of places are closed, but it’s great that you’re giving locals business!

Did you try the laksam in Kelantan? That's my favorite kind of laksa. There's supposedly a "thai laksa" or "laksa siam" that you find here in Malaysia, but I wonder if it's really Thai. Might be like Nasi Goreng Pattaya - in Malaysia they know what you are talking about, in Pattaya they don't.. 😁

So jealous, but i will be there in a month or so. So many places to see. A lot of small animal farms. Insect farm was my favourite. Elephant reserves like elephant poo paper are good. Chiang mai zoo is ok. And go to pai ofcourse and explore the area on motorbike. Mae hong song and lampang are great too.

Visit Wararos market for your T-shirt. It across from Khao Soi Islam where you had Khao Soi.
