CHEVY MALIBU INTERMITTENT NO CRANK NO START P0615 DIAGNOSIS & FIX
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In today's video we take a look at a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu with a 2.4l 4 cylinder engine. The customer complaint is that the car intermittently does not crank or start. After the owner lets the car cool down, she can restart it. Using a scan tool we find the trouble code P0615 stored in the ECM. This code is described as a starter relay control circuit failure code. The symptoms this car has and the trouble code remind me of a car I worked on previously with the same symptoms. That car turned out to have a faulty fuse box. Could this car have the same problem? Follow along as I show you how to diagnose and test this condition!

You're a great diagnostician, Eric, but you're an even greater person. God bless you, Eric.
I'm a Mechanic by trade myself, I love to see and learn issues I've never ran across and even gain more knowledge. I appreciate what you and God Bless 😎
You have saved me hundreds if not thousands of dollars and valuable family time that I would have spent replacing damn near every part on my truck until I came across your video and the fuse box issue and it put me in the right direction in fixing my issue. Thank you very much!
Awesome diagnosis! You did a great job explaining everything too. You're a natural teacher. Thanks!
I never got a code but had no crank no start after warm up. Took fuse box apart heated the wiring and checked continuity on all wires. Identified discontinuity on one wire ,magnified and found broken wire, soldered and so far so good 👍 thanks

How did you get the fuse block apart did you have to remove all the fuses and relays?
You are very good at this. I can see most of things you do is electrical work and flood cars. Most mechanics don't want to bother with electrical stuff, but you do. It just shows how competent you have become over the years. you inspired me to learn wiring diagrams after Tundra Fuel pump video. Thank you, awesome content.
Eric I could listen to you all day!!! Great info thank you!
Love the explanation and detail with the wiring diagram. That stuff right there is gold for DIY's like myself.

This has been super helpful- I sent to my mechanic after an intermittent no crank no start issue. My mechanic found several cracks in the fuse box leads, and we now await a new part with a way forward to fix the car! Thanks so much for this info and a great video.
This is the kind of diagnostic video i wanted to watch. You show everything in detail! Thank you.
Great video. Your troubleshooting skills are right up there with the best of them. They are so good that they can be applied anywhere. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Great diagnosis. Your explanation of the wiring diagram was excellent, too.

Couldn't agree more... Comments stating how much a video helped someone, is a motivational reason to make more videos, and gear them towards the DIYer. Excellent explanation as alway Eric!
This is amazing. Back in the 90s I used to own Ford Tempo that had similar issue. After engine heated up it shut down. It was intermittent issue. Mechanics couldn’t figure out what the issue was. It became process of blind part replacement that costed money. Now, that I see this video it was eye opening how it is truly easy to misdiagnose the issue. Thank you Eric for sharing all these valuable information. 👍
Great video as always Eric, and big up for you going back in time to remember the first problem and linking it to this issue. Keep up the good work as always Eric, keep the videos flowing, really look forward to them, always great content.

You SMA and Ivan are the ones who "fix" the problem. Great tech tip with the heat gun! I've used mine in the past to locate a problem. Another way to temporarily repair it would be to run an external wire from the relay socket to the wire going to ground. Not the best way to repair it, but better than having an intermittent problem until a new box is available.
Nice job. Should be a recall and a free dealer repair. Difficult diag, intermittents are the worst.
Many starting/drivability issues with the malibu stems from the faulty fuse box. Great diagnostic !
Genius craftsmanship, a true practitioner.

Wow! I am so impressed by your diagnostic abilities and your detailed explanation of how a relay works in relation to the ECM and what it does internally, how a fuse box looks like taken apart, and so on and so forth! Needless to say I subscribed to your very valuable channel!
I remember that video. I always keep it in mind because my youngest daughter drives a Chevy Malibu and you never know with this model fuse box. Thanks a lot.
I applied what you taught me on a pin-drag test for a Silverado ABS problem, similar year to yours. It cost me 0, abs is back in business. It's a similar story as to the fuse box issue. Thanks a million.

Very informative and thorough. Thanks for taking the time to lead us thru.
You should have your own shop.. you are worth the dealership price. Nothing worse then going to the dealership, who you think should know how to fix issues like this, paying high price diagnostic only for them to give you a dumb response, hold your car for weeks then end up having to return it for them to charge you more money. You a real hero... you should post a wallet tag so people can donate money to you... not cause your doing it for money but cause people like me really want to show you how much we appreciate you.. im literally writing this while sitting in my 10' malibu that WONT crank and furstrated of why I cant solve this issue... then I come to you tube and my hero (you) save me with knowledge.. appreciate you .. 🙏 YOUR FAMILY SHOULD BE PROUD... I’m so glad I came across this video after the car was in the shop for about a week and a half and they could not figure out what was wrong with it. My sons car is a 2012 Chevy Malibu and the mechanics could not figure out what was wrong with it. It was the same issue. No crank no start but you could jump it to get it to start. We ended up purchasing a new fuse box, direct from the Chevy parts dealer in town. When we took it in for service to Chevy, they did find the exact same code, but they said that the fuse box was on national back order. We were able to go directly to the parts department and pick it up the next day. The parts guy had it brought in from Arizona within the day we picked it up and took it to the service writer. He was stunned that we were even able to get this part. I guess service dept and parts dept do not talk to each other at that location. So if you take your car in and the service writer tells you a part is on national back order. Just call the parts department on your own and do your own research. The part was almost $500 and it was just around $200 for them to install it. We took the old fuse box apart and found the fractured copper wiring. Thank you so much for this video.
Great video. Usually videos like this get confusing at times but you made it very clear to understand. Keep up the good work! Subscribing to your channel for sure. Thanks bro!!

😊😊 first of all I couldn't find anybody to sort that wire up under the junction block but I ended up having to buy a new junction block AKA fuse box and that exactly what it was KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DOING MY 2011 CHEVY MALIBU LTZ RUNNING LIKE IT'S BRAND NEW THANKS AGAIN YOU TAKE CARE!!!!
Great job explaining the issue, Great work!
That's really smart of you to know the power probe was too sensitive! Thanks alot. U the man yo!
impressed that you found time to not only read but also answer my comment . I didn't think of the wire under the relay pin because i'd be worried about over flexing the female connector in the fuse box but if you were going to replace the fuse box or for a road side emergency I could see it.But it would suck if decided to solder it and it didn't work right because of a lose pin fitment problem. Great work I regularly watch south main auto and fordtechmakuloc because of their knowledge and thought processand I'm going to add you to that list. THUMBS UP EMOJI
Very useful and helpful .thankyou for so much headaches and pain and aches. You saved the day again. 💪
I have learned a lot from this channel!
As an ASE master tech since 1978, working on everything especially electrical. I used 4 home made jumper wires to connect the relay to the fuse / relay center. At this point, I can check voltage drop across 30 & 87. I can check the coil side to ground to see ground or ground plus drop across the coils internal resistance. You are correct in the way the computer spends 4-5 minutes checking each circuit. But if good when cold, it passes the test and moves on to next. TBS are generated by a high fail rate, parts sent in and engineering looks to find the root cause. It they have 40-60 dealer techs per day calling with a similar problem, they will give then 2,3,4 items to check. Once again, if a tech finds this issue, then they are sent a replacement and shipping label to get the fuse / relay center assembly sent back. If the get a number, then it is re-designed, new part number for the part and included into the “TSB”. You can use a jumper wire to bridge the break as that would stand the expansion & contraction. But call the dealer, ask for the service manager and be honest about having video, VIN numbers and ask if the regional service manager can call you or speak to the technical hot line. Now, there are more than one dealer out there, just like customer service at any company from Ford to Summit, sometimes you get a person that is good and will to help, sometimes they act like you are bothering them, and get no where fast. Also, the back of the owners manual has a GM customer service number and they maybe able to get you to the right folks. I worked on contract labor for Raytheon but was in the field as an ACDelco service rep. We had the power to make phone calls, send photos or video into the department that handles fuse/relay boxes. Locally, you will have a warehouse distributor that sells Delco parts to the dealer as well. They to know how to get an ACDelco service person who may take interest in your finds. I know it’s a lot of work on your behalf and no one at GM is going to send you a new Corvette for finding this issue but don’t give up!!! ACDelco ex-Market Area Service Manager, but one of 56 nation wide who did hands on classes and held technical seminars for shops the warehouse distributors invited to attend. Yes, some of us were ASE Master Techs and had L1, P2 as well and owned a tool box and made our living once fixing cars, but not all are the same. It is hard to find someone to spend 243 days per year in a hotel holding seminars, teaching and dealing with returns. Plus, they have cut most of those jobs! Great video and just remember that using a headlamp bulb that draws 4amps May heat that circuit better than a heat gun. I will tell you, Thanks for your efforts!!! Parts on national back order as it is being redesigned and beefed up perhaps. So the 2013-2016 did not have this problem! DK, Omaha, retired!
Excellent demonstration!
Thank you, my wife has, 2014 malibu I know this problem is coming I just purchase Top don phoenix pro I just want to say thank you I work on my family cars, and I would have bought a new fuse box and that would been very costly I been working on cars more then 20 years and you are never too old to learn something from younger generation. God bless !
Very nice work finding a non-obvious fault. Few shops are skilled enough to find intermittent electrical failures, especially something as subtle as a cracked wire in a fuse box. My sister-in-law's car is having a crank but no start problem and perhaps this will explain the problem. I'll try some of your suggested troubleshooting tips. Thanks.
If I was the car owner you would be fixing the box , really good video !
I used to use Heat Guns and Freeze Spray when I used to repair Medical Equipment back in the day. I had Patient Monitors that would stop working. I would heat up the capacitors and the display did not work and when I hot it with the freeze spray the display would work again. So I was able to repair unit with a couple of dollars of parts instead of replacing entire circuit board. Great catch on your part with this issue.
Good points! I’m working on one as well and it’s doing the same thing. I will test the box . Thank you for this video!
Hello. Thank you so much for your video. My granddaughters needed their car for school. We were at wits end. My husband changed the starter and checked the battery and the relay.
