thanks so much for the video, you can open the key fob using the physical key as a screwdriver as well as for the battery part. there's no need for external tools. my key fob wasn't reading so I just took the battery out and put the same battery back in and it worked. again thank you so much

Today my 2018 Premier Bolt didn't read the presence of the key fob, and started honking. Yipes! Fortunately I had read the manual enough to know where the "pocket" was, put the fob in, and it stopped. BUT I didn't know the best way to pry open the fob to replace the battery, so your video was just what I needed. Have had the car only since September 20, 2018, so expected the battery in the fob to last longer. Now I'm carrying a backup 2032. By the way, I was worried when Rite Aid only had DL 2032 batteries, not CR 2032s. Looked up the difference, and the web page I read said it was generic (CR) vs. brand name (DL for Duracell). Hope that's correct! Thanks for your clear, helpful video.

Glad it helped. It's worth noting that there's a problem with the Bolt such that the key fob will sometimes not work even when the battery is fine. It's happened to me a few times. Sometimes waiting 10 minutes will fix it too :-) But if you need to get going, the method shown in the video hasn't failed me yet.

Thank you for posting this! It gave me the confidence to crack open my Bolt's key fob and change the battery easily in a couple of minutes! Saved me a trip to the dealer and probably a lot of money, too! Now that I have a new battery installed, I hope to avoid embarrassing theft alarms and urgent calls from GM who wanted me to know that my Bolt was being "stolen". Frankly surprised that an 18 month old battery would need replacing so soon.

@@whatisron .... yeah, maybe the installer touched the battery at the factory and compromised it, reducing its lifespan. See comment below by Greg Kent about this.

  • @whatisron

@@macmancapecod the issue with touching batteries with bare hands isn't that fingers are conductive -- you're just not handling the batteries long enough to matter since fingers are poor conductors. The issue is that fingers can be oily and that oil can potentially create a bridge between the positive and negative side of the battery. In theory, this could lead to a trickle current that depletes the battery. The odds of this aren't too high if you are working with clean, dry hands -- so, it's a good idea to clean your hands with soap beforehand (or use latex gloves if you're really concerned). Be sure not to use tweezers though... they *are* very good conductors and using tweezers to grasp a battery by both sides completes a circuit and will drain the battery rapidly.

No need for a screw driver to replace the battery. Insert the key back into the holder about a quarter inch and twist or pry the two halves apart.
