That was excellent breakdown of your build. I like your choice of parts. Ever since I first heard about peanut port heads and low rpm grunt, I have wanted to build a similar combo. Personally I would like an overall combo almost exactly like yours, put it in my 78 Malibu, drive it to the track, foot brake bracket race it, and win rounds, NO QUESTION ABOUT IT. I got to get this thing going, thanks.

Wow, flat tops with 236 peanuts will yield about 8.5:1 compression. With the 268 cam you should be able to run 87 octane. I built a similar set up about 15 years ago, 12cc dome pistons with 781 heads and a 270/.520 cam. Ran high 13's in a 1971 Chevrolet SS. Very mild but fun setup.

I think YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED ! The more I drive this combo the more I love it ! Maybe the 268 cam would be a better choice but you are still going to have a lot of fun ! These heads are going to give you great throttle response right where you need it most in that heavy truck .When GM designed these heads it wasn't just for emissions . They knew the large oval ports weren't getting it done for throttle response on their trucks. Now these heads are done above 5,000 RPM so if you were building a truck that you were going to race then the 781 or 049 would be a better choice. Good luck with your combo and let me know how you make to !

@dtread9543 more of an FYI thing, 781's, 049's, and any other aluminum head, well obviously none of the aluminum one's that are too big will give you more torque everywhere in the curve than the peanut ports. I'm not poo pooing the peanut ports. Im just trying to keep things in perspective about small ports making torque, power, or throttle response. the comes a point where small is too small, and that's the case with peanut ports and bigger cubic inch engines. I don't know about 396's, but 454 cubic inches for sure. like I said, I'm not poo pooing them for any type of use. I used them on a 489.

Not bad if you own a 454 already but. A well prepped setup can make 550. Doesn’t take a lot for a small block to make 550 and is a lot lighter. I know the throttle response and very low rpm torque is incredible on the peanuts.

Dan, thank you for making this video. I'm new to big blocks and didn't know which way to go. All I knew was that I wanted a budget build. My plan was to add a cam, aluminum intake, carb and headers. I'm currently working on a 454 build but didn't know which cam to use, intake and carb and If I should add different heads than what I have "peanut port." Now I have something to go by and mimic your build. It will be going in a 1970 Chevy Nova with a 700r4 with 2500 stall converter and posi 12 bolt with 373 gears. One question, do you know more less what kind of horse power your motor has? I'm not looking to go racing, I just want a driver with good mileage and reliability with the sound of a nice rumbling cam.

Victor you will NOT be disappointed in your build ! When GM designed the PP head it was not just an emission head . They wanted better throttle response and torque in the RPM range that you spend most of your time in . That sounds like one heck of a combination your going to have. The low gear in the 700r4 , converter , and 3.73 and the grunt that your motor will put out will surely impress ! The only issue will be keeping rear tires on that baby ! lol. I would say my motor is an honest 425 -430 HP ,maybe a little more. Thanks for watching and the comments !
