Chevrolet Caprice Classic REVIEW (B-Body/Impala/Box)- My First Car!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I review and rate my first car (1978 Chevy Caprice Classic 350 V8).
My second car reviewed here- (1992 Mercury Cougar/Ford Thunderbird)
• Mercury Cougar REVIEW ...
My "Box Caprice" was very similar to these other B-Body models:
Chevrolet Impala, Buick LeSabre, Buick Estate, Oldsmobile 88, Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser, Pontiac Parisienne, Pontiac Catalina, Pontiac Laurentian, Pontiac Safari, and the Chevrolet Bel Air (Canada).
Mine was a sedan, but they were also available as a station wagon and a coupe. They were popular as taxi cabs and police cruisers as well (9C1).
The "Box Caprice" gen ran from 1977 to 1990 (77-90).
This car was the number 1 seller when it debuted in 1977. It won Motor Trend Magazine's Car of the Year Award, and Car and Driver gave it a 10 Best win in 1983.
Was it worth the hype? Was it a good first car?
Find out in this car review, which includes Caprice ad and car commercials, Caprice crash tests, an overview of Caprice problem areas and common issues, and more.

I had a much nicer first car than many, but even enthusiasts with junkers as their first cars seem to have great memories of them. I suppose it's FINALLY getting that sense of freedom away from the folks! And the B-Body was SO GOOD for GM!

Loved it Brad! Brought back lots of memories from a time when your parents pick your first car, but I had to shell out the $$ from my early farm jobs of baling hay, raising pigs for market, and weeding beans before the days of Killer Roundup. My first was a 1966 Oldsmobile Delta 88. A boat for sure, but with 425 engine it could really move! At least mine was a 2 door coupe so still had a sporty look. I loved your comment about 'driving like a waterbed!' And the pics of your parents and you at 14- priceless!

East Coast Classics there were so many good ads but that one was my favorite. Not only the cheese factor but how nonsensical it is the more you think about it! He gets a promotion and then immediately jumps into the new Caprice as if he was not only expecting a new car, but THAT one! So do all upper level managers in this company get Caprices immediately upon promotion??

  • @hullinger

@@RetroCarsForever I remember that commercial from your youth and I also recall thinking that a Caprice isn't what I would be wanting if promoted to VP. Not a knock on Caprice, just higher expectations, that's all. Your videos are seriously kick-ass and incredibly well thought out, put together and narrated. Just an outstanding job and I hope you feel good about them. It's always amazes me when videos like yours don't bring the views that they deserve. @@hullinger I'd love to see in the ad guy be like- "I'm super happy to be promoted and all, but could you have sprung for a BMW or something instead? It's the 80s and I'm not an old man!" LOL Thank you for the kind words! I'd love more views, but I'm also just getting started on consistent car content. Even though my channel's been around awhile, it's never been focused or marketed. Now that I'm focusing on a certain subject/brand, and plan on putting out videos at least twice a week consistently, I hope to see a steady rise over time. Another comment, if I may. My dad bought a 1977 Caprice Classic in 1978, off the lot; it was the family's first car. There are more pictures of that car than there are of me, but that's neither here nor there. Anyway, we had that car for 30 years, until 2008, when my dad got his new truck. When Ecology Auto Wrecking towed the car away, I couldn't hold back my tears. That was 30 years of family history literally rolling away. I'm the youngest of 3; all my brothers and I learned how to drive in that car.

Strong debut. Enjoyed this very much. 15 minutes? Seemed shorter. Loved the flow, use of old commercials and magazines (your Subscribe pointer is great!) worked nicely. And you're a natural on camera. Just like the cat! You and I bought our first cars the same year! Yeah, I was a later-bloomer when it came to owning wheels. My friends always drove. Or I drove my brother's car (sweet '79 Nova) or I took the bus. It was just never a goal for me. Until it was a necessity. Mine was a used rust-colored 1982 Toyota Tercel. Always threatening to fall apart but never did. I used it for work and to drive to NYC every month to hang with friends. Strangest part about that was driving along the highway and seeing newer, shinier cars abandoned in the gutter. But Etta just ignored them and got me through. I called her Etta. I miss Etta. Wow-Tangent! Anyway, entertaining review! Look forward to the next!

And weirdly, most car content/reviews I see nowadays are WAY longer than 15 minutes, and they're typically not edited much, if at all. 15 minutes was my maximum runtime goal. You can't beat a Toyota for reliability!

My first car was a 1984 Honda Accord LX. 5 speed. Bought in 1991 when I turned 16. The funny part is there a guy I met through Radwood that has the EXACT car and he's selling it. I came close to buying it a few weeks ago, but just couldn't bring myself to pay the tariff he wants. He has it for sale in Seattle. The shipping cost from Seattle to Houston played a big part in taking it out of why I didn't want to buy it.

My stepdad had one of those, and he still said it was the best car he ever owned! I test drove one recently and was floored at how good they still feel. But I hear ya on shipping...I've considered it a few times on some rare cars but always passed. A few grand or so seems to be the going rate, hard to justify that cost when you can just wait and one should pop up nearer to you. Plus I hate not being able to see the car in person first.

This was my first car too when I got my drivers license in 1992. Mine was a '77 2dr (aero)coupe. It had the 305 V8. My Grandfather bought it new in the fall of 1976, and it became became our family car when he died in 1988. The car I thought I was destined to get handed to me was my Mom's ''81 Monte Carlo, but the Monte's engine was shot by 1990. I learned to drive on the Caprice. It stalled a lot, it was hard to get started because the engine would flood. I thought it was a boat, and I didn't appreciate it. I was embarrassed of it at high school. Until this day though FWD "smaller" cars have always felt inferior to me. I compare everything to the Caprice I learned to drive on. It was the car I was driving home from school in during the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993. We listened to NYC radio stations in New Jersey and since they were broadcast from the top of the WTC all the NYC station went out when the bombing occurred.

Awesome review, I like the editing between old school TV ads and the dialog. The comparison to "today's standards" is 100% unfair unless you compare it to "today's classic car standards" or at least make it clear every time you compare. Caprice was definitely a luxury vehicle and sports cruiser (impala) it depends what model they got. Other than that you are in for a successful series. You provide great engagement and facts to the viewer. Great job!

Thanks! As for comparing old cars to new...My scale was set up for modern used car buyers (as all the cars I've ever bought were used, and this is the first in a series of over twenty ownership reviews). So while not comparing to anything BRAND new, a lot of the other cars are much more modern (the bulk of them from the 90s). That said, there ARE checks and balances in my categories that would hurt the score of a new car. The "Purchase Price" category gives a score of a 1 for any car that costs $35k and up...That's the average price of a new car. The "Specialness" category is also where most new cars would falter. And the long term reliability of most brand new cars is going to be rough...Things are so complicated and difficult to replace compared to the old days, and that's something I def factor in to the "Reliabilty" category. In any case, thanks for your thoughts, and for watching!

Slight difference- F40 was "heavy duty" whereas F41 was "handling." Both will firm up the ride and handling, but "heavy duty" was more for towing and "handling" included a rear sway bar and was better for corner carving. And of course there's also the "9C1" which indicates the police package that will also firm things up.

LOL, I am kicking myself that I didn't buy something like this in 1997 for $2000. Looks are subjective, so I vehemently disagree with the 5 out of 10 scoring....for me, looking through the eyes of when these were brand-spanking new, these were simply gorgeous, and to me, still are. We Americans are a rather disposable culture, which can be good and bad, and the general public seems to value the latest and greatest, but damn, I'd love to have your former Caprice! My first car was a Civic, which did turn me on to small Japanese cars, but my fondness for this car will never die. Looks are super subjective...My scale is pretty wide, lets say the most beautiful car in the world (like an Aston Martin) is a 10, and the ugliest (say, a Pontiac Aztek) is a 1...I think the Caprice is def somewhere in the middle. Still sharp, handsome cars though. As for the $2,000 in 1997...That's about what I bought mine for, around that time!

Tip. Buy smart. Get one that has been maintained and not abused. There are still decent originals out there, you just have to look and be patient. As far as reliability, they can be as reliable as Toyota's and beyond. If you don't do the work yourself, look for a mechanic that know's how to tune a carburetor-still a few out there-and you should have few if any starting issues. I knew a guy who had an '86 Caprice-305-that lasted over 300,000 miles with few issues until it snapped a rod. And this is only one personal example. I own an '83 Impala as a regular driver and if looked after, can theoretically last forever.

As a lover of the 77-79 Caprice and Impala, I'm offended at your comments about these cars. You're making these cars out to be hard to start when in fact YOU simply don't know HOW to start a carburated engine. You don't sit there just grinding on the starter, or pumping the gas pedal while the starter is engaged. You have to set the choke on the carb first (even if you have an electronic choke) and then engage the starter. It should then start right up, even in cold temperatures. If you set the choke properly and it still won't easily start, the carb is out of adjustment. Those are facts. When started CORRECTLY, they fire up immediately. Here's a vid of one of my 79 Impalas with a properly tuned carb on it. Notice how easily it starts? It was 17 degrees out that morning. Notice how the idle increases all on it's own? That's the electronic choke properly doing it's thing. No sir, these cars ARE NOT hard at all to start. kzread.info/dash/bejne/f32BvMelndKYeZs.html

Good tip. I do remember that a mechanic friend and I spent some time adjusting/cleaning our carb, which helped. But it's still a pain to deal with compared to the fuel-injected cars that typically don't need any of that hassle. I definitely learned how to start the car the longer I owned it.
