Chevauchée, 1355 AD ⚔️ Battle of Poitiers Part 1 of 2

★ The Battle of Poitiers in 1356 AD was a major encounter of the Hundred Years War. But little attention is given to the Grand Chevauchée (raid) of 1355, conducted by the Black Prince - the son of King Edward III. Chevauchée of 1355 was, in hindsight, the 'Grand Prelude' of sorts to the Battle of Poitiers that took place just less than a year later.
Although no battles were fought and no territory conquered during the Chevauchée of 1355, southern France was utterly devastated. The destruction of the rich countryside and urban areas, and the atrocities against the civilian population are among the most brutal military campaigns of the medieval period.
This video is part 1 of a two-part mini series about the Battle of Poitiers, 1356 AD.

    It's odd how over fifty years before Agincourt the English army travelled on horseback- though mainly fought on foot. The Black Prince had trouble with joining his forces with Lancaster due to them being on either side of a large river. Poitiers was the greatest battle of the Hundred Years War in my opinion- it showed that apart from the archers, the English men at arms were far superior to their French counterparts. The Black Prince's encirclement of the French force was a brilliant tactic and brilliantly realised. He captured the French king, he faced three separate French forces- though some retreated back to their castles when they saw the effect of the English tactics.

    I watched in paralel "HistoryMarche" and "Kings and Generals" not being decided which one is better. Finaly, I came the conclusion that both are extremely good, well documented and as fair as anyone can be about facts and people who lived well before our time. It is a refreshing spring of knowledge and professionalsm that I thought has dried out in this era of history revisionism and political corectness. Thank you!

    Chevauchée was a strategy already in use for ages. Rest did it too. The oddity is here... he was allowed to go unchecked. Hence the deathtoll kept mounting. The idea of a Chevauchée was to quickly weaken and force advantageous battles to take place. Here the opponent just didn't react. Though to be fair there were reasons for this. I do agree with the sack of Limoges being horribly excessive but that was in a much later stage of the Black Prince's life. But sickness seems to have made him a bit erratic and unstable by then. There he did end up being genuinely cruel.

    I'm sorry, but I don't think this channel will ever make it to 500k. Their are few history channels who ever get that big, because of the small audience. The only way is probably to make simple history videos, where you either explain one event shortly, or simplify a lot. For example, this videos information, that I am interested in, could be condensed down to a few minutes. Ofcurse it's still excellent work, and I would love to see this channel get really big, but it's unlikely to get over 200k.

    It is my understanding that "Ich Dien" was adopted in tribute to the bravery of the blind King John of Bohemia, who lost his life in a forlorn cavalry charge at Crecy, his horse's reigns being held by attendants. +Chronicler13666 All those channels are fantastic, I'm also glad to have found a new one with quality. If you're looking for others, Historia Civilis has similar videos, and as far as I know was the first channel to get big doing graphical depictions of historical battles like this. Though he has a pretty tight focus on Roman and Greek history, that does let him go more in depth than others, with more attention paid to minor engagements, tactics used, and the strategic & political situation. Some of his videos are entirely about the political drama that caused various conflicts to happen. EpicHistoryTV is another one to check out. They come at things with a bit more of a "big picture" view, but have great animation and depictions of historical battles in their videos. They also cover some more modern conflicts than these others do (though BazBattles did recently join them in that).

    -Kings and Generals - most consistently producing videos. They don't do many battle videos anymore, which is a shame (6 in the past 2 months) but they're still pretty good in the other stuff that they cover. Check out their older content for consistent battles, covering a whole range of eras; click on their channel's videos, go by "oldest" and enjoy. -Historia Civilis - Their series on Alexander and Rome especially are excellent. -Dovahatty - He covers the Roman period but in a pretty hilarious way, portraying the Germanic tribes as "Germs", depicted as goblins where the Romans are "chads". -Eastory - He made a name for himself by covering the Eastern Front in WW2, and being able to see how that frontline changed, the numbers killed/captured in a way that really brought the period to life in a way that I'd never encountered before. -Epic History TV - Watch them for their Napoleonic series. Their narrator speaks so slowly that he puts me to sleep, so definitely up the speed on their vids, particularly the earlier ones. Also watch the video covering Francis Drake's circumnavigation of the world as well as Alexander the Great's translated speech during the Opis mutiny. -History Matters - Formerly Ten Minute History, he did sell out by abandoning that format and instead doing short, 3 minute videos that answer specific questions (which are fairly interesting), but I'd highly recommend his old 10 minute videos. -BazBattles - This got me into youtube history channels, but their videos are monthly at best. Check out their vids on the Crusades. -Invicta - You really have to sieve through their content because most are Total War gameplay videos. However their series on the Roman siege of Jerusalem is fantastic. I only wished that they focused more time on stuff like this. Also check out their vid on Odaenathus. -Montemayor - Barely a handful of videos, clearly a guy slaving over it in his spare time as opposed to most of the above doing this for a living, but unique insight into events like Pearl Harbour. -Extra Credits - Again, diluting their quality with silly videos but there are gems to be found. Check out the series on Admiral Yi, that will get you into it. The narrator is very annoying though; it seems like they've digitally altered his voice to sound androgynous, which is needlessly bizarre (they've since got someone else, who I find even worse; a try hard). -Historigraph - Naval battles in WW1 and WW2. -Hoc Est Bellum - A small channel, but their coverage of the Ionian revolts is interesting. -History Explained - Only a few vids so far but he focuses on the Ancient Egyptian and Babylonian kings. -Syntagma - Covers the Romans. His first video got 5.7m views, which is insane (he only has 75k subscribers right now). It covered Cynoscephalae, -History Uncovered - Check out his vid on Eugene of Savoy, essentially the saviour of Europe from Islam. -Sam Harris (not that one) - He only has one credit to his name, but he shed some light on Sulla and his exploits that I wasn't aware of. Fascinating man. Also just discovered this channel due to my fascination with this era, brought on by my reading of Harlequin (great book) from Bernard Cornwell (he did Sharpe and The Last Kingdom), the first part of a series that covers these events through the eyes of a fictional archer in the English army.

    Absolutely agreed. I've been thinking about making specials since I first started making these videos. The only question mark I have for myself is: "How to frame them". Namely, how to make videos interesting that don't contain set-piece battles. I think I've got something figured out, but for now I will mainly focus on events which contain battles.

    Actually very difficult to do, as fighting a split force requires either splitting your own, or fighting consecutive battles with a single force. There are a lot of risks involved, and if any one battle lasts too long, your risk having your battle-weary troops caught between a battered but holding enemy and their fresh reinforcements. Exhaustion is one of those 'human factors' that armchair generals always seem to forget about...a victorious army is actually a vulnerable army, if there are still battles to be fought. Men are tired, horses are tired, entire units may be rendered combat-ineffective by casualties....and French nobles of the time had a bad habit of just leaving the army entirely after participating in a victory, considering their obligation of military service for that year fulfilled.

  • @1987MartinT

    @1987MartinT

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@joshuamarvin7400 Yeah, forgetting the human factors is a classic military blunder. No matter how good your plan is it still has to be carried out by human beings. A surprising amount of commanders forget this. For example, the American commanders in Vietnam, when they planned Search and Destroy tactics, failed to take into account how draining fighting over the same terrain over and over again would be for the soldiers' morale. One of the reasons why the Schlieffen Plan failed was that the soldiers were expected to march continuously for 6 weeks in a row. Things like traffic jams, dead transport animals, blisters, heat strokes, and plain exhaustion weren't taken into consideration.

    I hope you use Professor Clifford J. Rogers' take on the battle rather than what until recently have been considered correct, such as what you can read about in the Osprey book with the same title. It will also be interesting if you manage to identify all the different military tactics involved in the battle. In modern maneuver warfare theory, the battle can be broken down into specific maneuvers. For instance, the English started with the positioning of the Black Princes' division on the left side of the slope where the battle took place. When the French advanced banners against them with their crossbowmen in the front, the Earl of Warwick in charge of the Vanguard to the right, hidden behind hedges and woodland, charged along the road and struck the French crossbowmen in the flank. As a result the French cavalry to the rear on the French left, charged against the Earl of Warwick and his mounted men-at-arms. The Earls of Warwick turned around and retreated back the same rout he came from. The French cavalry had taken the bait. When he came to a narrow passage between some hedges he dismounted his men and formed a wall of lances with the archers positioned on the flanks protected by the hedges. The French cavalry turned to the left of this passage along the road to get behind them, but the Earl of Salisbury and the rearguard plunged this hole on the road between the hedge on Warwicks right and the marshy woodland to Salisbury's right. When the French cavalry tried to push their way through, the archers on the opposite side of the marshy swampland completely annihilated them with enfilading fire. This was just the start of the battle. There are many more phases. The French attacked first with the crossbowmen, than the cavalry. After this the first division of dismounted men-at-arms, than the second division and finally the third division of dismounted men-at-arms. The English was always one step ahead of them. When they used crossbowmen, the English used cavalry, when they attacked, the English flanked them with enfilading fire, when the French second division broke and ran off, the English mounted up and chased after them, turned around, dismounted and struck the third division in the left flank and surprised them with cavalry and mounted archers in the rear. The battle have several of the points in maneuver warfare theory. - Tempo (the English dominated decisionmaking and the French were unable to cope with this. This started when they attacked the crossbowmen and annihilated the cavalry, the second cavalry force on the French right and the first French division of dismounted men-at-arms. At this point the battle was won, because the English had the defensive position and could maneuver freely with heavy cavalry and mounted archers, which they did) - Schwerpunkt (the battle didn't have this, but battles in medieval times rarely do. Alexander at Gaugamela used such an attack by concentrating his hypaspists in one area on the field and pushed them straight through the lines towards Darius, the Center of Gravity) - An attack on the Center of Gravity, the enemies center of strength, usually their commander, but also their combined-arms approach in detail, to facilitate a domino effect by utilizing a dominant weapon system against the enemies weaker system. (In this case it was heavy cavalry against crossbowmen in the open and dismounted men-at-arms with lances and protected archers on the flanks against cavalry. Once they had taken out the French cavalry their own cavalry could maneuver freely and create a deteriorating situation they could not control and defend against) - Surprise based on deception (the attack on the crossbowmen and archers flanking the cavalry (which happened two times during the battle) and the English cavalry force going around the third division and attacking them in the rear are all examples of this) - Combined arms tactic (this would be dismounted men-at-arms defending the archers and the archers killing and wounding the enemy men-at-arms in order to make the melee easier for your own men-at-arms. It's also infantry defending the cavalry and enable the maneuver of striking them in the flank or rear with cavalry) - Flexibility in terms of well rounded and redundant (men-at-arms fighting as heavy cavalry and dismounted men-at-arms and archers fighting as infantry and as mounted archers or dragoons. Redundant will be that all the three divisions had their own men-at-arms and archers, and this was crucial to the outcome. The breakdown was around 5/12 in the Main Battle, 4/12 in the Vanguard and 3/12 in the Rear Guard.) - Decentralized command because changing situations outpace communication. Only knowledge of overall intent is needed ( the initiative of competent commanders such as the Earl of Warwick and Salisbury and other commanders at the right moment, was of immense importance for the outcome)

    Thank you thank you. I also recommend the article Rogers wrote for a Spanish magazine. The English version is called The battle of Poitiers 1356. Yes, unfortunately the videos can't be too long if you want to entertain the general public. I on the other hand, have no problems with longer videos. In fact, I prefer longer videos if they are full of details. But that's just me. Breaking them into smaller parts around 12 minutes long is probably best. If you do a good job you'll grow as big as Historia Civilis, BazBattles, Kings and Generals, Epic History TV and Military History Visualized. If I knew how to make great visual content I'd probably make my own channel, so you should make as much as you can out of your talent. I wish you good luck and hope that in 6 months time you'll have around 25k subs and 100k in a year.
