Chet Baker plays "Candy" (Full performance and interview, 1985)

Subscribe: goo.gl/dPj1So
Long unavailable video of Chet Baker playing a relaxed session in the Sone Record library (Lidingö, Sweden), with the highly compatible support of French pianist Michael Graillier and Belgian bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse.
It features not only Chet’s sensitive and distinctive interpretations of classic jazz themes by Bud Powell and Miles David and great popular music standards by Rodgers & Hart, Cole Porter and Mack David, Joan Whitney and Alex Kramer (the title track), but also a guest appearance by Red Mitchell, the celebrated bassist, then resident in Stockholm.
After Red undertakes a short but fascinating interview with Chet, the two join forces to play a most delightful version of the enduring Rodgers & Hart ballad, ‘My Romance’.
This session has been described by American reviewer J. Hughes as Chet Baker’s finest recording and performance in jazz trio setting. He adds, “These musicians find the same wave-lenght and attack this repertoire with poignant spontaneity and amazing improvisation.”

When I think of Chet Baker I think of the true emotions and beauty that lie within his art. His unique phrasing, effortless speaking through the horn. And his ear, and the way he heard and found notes that others did not know existed. Although my dad taught me about Maynard, Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman and all the great big bands I had to find the greatest jazz players on my own, and in Chet I found the finest. There will never be another player like Chet Baker and it makes me cry, it makes me sad and it makes me blue. Love you forever Chet.

Having the ability to listen to music as Chet Baker does must be a sort of superpower. Just look at how he pays attention to the piano playing my romance. In his mind, there is no sophisticated musical theory just a real understanding of the music and what it conveys.

I may show off a little, i saw him 4 times in Barcelona and at Ronnie´s in London, I hope people today may enjoy listen to him, there is still hope good music can still be here so everybody can relish it. long life to real honest music. During his solo on candy he does not miss one note. Not even a hesitation. Although we all know these notes are out in the atmosphere and he has the realm them in and suddenly compose a beautiful continuous melody how he does it without searching or looking for notes is too incredible for me to fathom. There are very few musicians that have this many marvelous ideas just come to them at a moments notice and execute them precisely and rhythmically. He was the best I have ever heard on any instrument.

Chet could really do it all! He was best known for his West Coast type of cool jazz, but he was bluesy or soulful, at will, even operatic with his instrument at times, and his pitch was right on, phrasing in his singing and his breath control were as you would expect from a brass or woodwind player, in full control! As a musician myself, I can understand going off the score and just putting it out there in whatever way you felt! I "composed" music all the time when I was playing the piano solo, too bad I didn't have some of it recorded because I could never do it the same way twice, and I never wrote it down! If I went off on a tangent when I was playing with a combo, they followed along just fine, they had good "ears" obviously! Some of it, I know, was good because I'd have people ask me "what WAS that, it was beautiful" and I didn't name it so I didn't know! Music, is often 'feelings' -- how you feel at the time and have let it all hang out! Some of it is better than other times! Sometimes you're really "on" and other times, not so much!

An exhausted cow hand from a jazz musical called: 'High Chaparral', uncle Chet. But I love his music, trumpet as well as quite remarkable voice, sometimes scatting his instrument. Please, mister candyman, fly me to your 😊moon... Those were days... Forecast of eternity...

Chets genius was his ear. He had no training in harmony but he could hear and replicate changes with little or no study or even memorization. Hardly a technical master his playing is still pure and clean. His piano player accompanists marveled at his ability to get into the essence of the changes with little or no rehearsal of practice.

Chet's trumpet endurance was ridiculous. He seemed to never tire during a set. Was it the Bach 6C mouthpiece? I doubt it. He just had the "chops."
