I was wondering around Paris very late one night in the '60s (yes, what was I thinking) and heard this haunting music coming from a club and followed on in. There was Chet on stage and only a scattering people still left in the club. I was blown away...and still am. After the set we talked for awhile. Such a sweetheart...and a fun way to have found his soulful music.

I saw Chet four times in Paris, France in the 80's, around the years this video was shot. Well, 3 times and a half actually, as he canceled one of the concerts at the New Morning after arriving 1 hr late and trying two or three times to sing "I remember you", but he was too high, or not enough, I don't know, so he just grabbed his overcoat and crossed the room to get out of the place, and next thing you know, we just heard an announcement "Mr Baker is refunding all the tickets or you can come back tomorrow". Course, the next day concert was just great. The sidemen were the same as @Ronnie Scott's, no drums either, and the atmosphere exactly the same. Also, one or two years later, I had the luck to see Chet on stage with Archie Shepp on ts and Horace Parlan on the piano. An album was recorded from these concerts. I still have mixed feelings about this concert, though, as their styles were radically different and Chet Baker seemed so old and so weak and it didn't seem like they had a great complicity. Great memories all the same. A great album to listen to, recorded in these days at the end of his career is "Chet Baker sings again".

I’ve heard Baker in 1986 in Basel with Philip Catherine live without having heard anything about him until that evening...and I thought, well, the guy can play and sing. And never stop listening to him regularly until this day. Best record for me: It could happen to you with Kenny Drew.

I saw him play the Schlachthof in Munich in 86 or 87, absolutely incredible.

This is superior Jazz. No overplaying. In the pocket. Searching and melancholy and yearning. Behind the beat just a bit. Chet is (was?) a master and sorely missed.

@@masonklein Sadly not (it's a long story) but I have the memories. I was very close to the stage and poor Chet did not look well but my lasting memory of speaking to him was how much of a gentleman he was. He's just completed a set and I saw him on his own at the bar and took the opportunity to talk to him. A lot of so called stars would have palmed me off but Chet was really engaging and charming.

I used to work at the hotel at which he often stayed in the early 80s until he could no longer afford it (at least, that's how I read it) and then he moved to a different hotel, which is the one, so I understand, where he later passed away. Quiet, calm, unassuming and sad, so sad, so lost. No reason to name the hotels, but his sadness, the way he seemed so lost still gets to me. I don't think I'd run into live recordings before. I've only listened for a few minutes, will listen to the rest tomorrow or later. The sadness would get to me too much right now.

Hello, yes it was in 1986. By the way, I know the hotel you refer to where Chet died in Amsterdam. He was apparently sitting on a windowsill and fell to his death. When the police arrived, they estimated his age as being much younger. It seems that the facial 'creases' he had developed over the years had smoothed away and he'd regained some of his looks from earlier years. I like to think that he was at peace and the demons that had followed him over the years had gone away.......

I'm a therapist and whenever I hear Chet play, or see the expression on his face, I wish I could have known him; given him the space to open up and express his pain. I know that that same pain is what created his amazing music, and at the same time my heart opens for him.

Such an incredible Talent but cursed with demons. There will never be another that can handle the horn as effortlessly as he does, to delivers such a fabulous performance. LIfe is sometimes cruel and there are too many "If Only's". His rich legacy will continiue to discovered by passing generations - Not a bad little collection to be inspired by. Chet had a deep soul... intermixed with decades of inner turmoil of which I can relate to 24/7 365 & 'Art Pepper, Bill Evans & So many others were fighting demons incl. 'Charlie 'Yardbird' Parker & Billie & Sarah, etc...

Entropy made audible. Like the beauty in a carved mountain worn away by the rivers and winds Chet is the space between the bars and the silence between the notes. He is timeless and part of the Universal Consciousness.

The man lived a hard life. There are legends of fans coming to listen to him blow at the field of the Italian prison where he was sentenced for drug use charges towards the end of his life. To see him performing and looking this good with an entire band is a blessing.

I'm 40 yrs old guy living in Korea and all my life I have always been listening to music, literally all kinds of music...jazz, classical, opera, afro-cuban, indian, you name it. But the first song of this DVD, Ellen David, is my absolute favorite. This is.... music that is expressed in the purest way I think. I owned the DVD but it is so nice to have this precious film on youtube so that I can listen to it whenever I want and I can recommend this beautiful piece to my friends easily. Thank you.

how those three musicians could play so good escapes me. That is real music with capital letters. I have had the honour of seeing Chet 4 times, 3 in Barcelona and one at Ronnie Scott´s back in ´86. I like jazz, but chet is different, he is the one that has something nobody else has, one piece of advice, listen to Chet on lps, they sound great, I have more than 20 lps by him, the cds do not count, but the lps are so expensive, thank god there are still some people like us that love good music. Let´s have a drink to ourselves. Long live to good music, greetings from down south Barcelona.

There will not be another jazz assembly of such collective greatness in this world again as there was in this moment in time .. One of the many gifts the maestro Chet Baker left to this world.

This is utter bliss. Chet you are missed.

I heard Chet in the early 80's in Manhattan at Fat Tuesdays ... He played and sang beautifully. Between sets Chet sat down with my date and me and was very cordial, the conversation friendly and warm. Michel Legrand came in with his group and then Hal Galper dropped by ... Bud Shank showed up .... everyone jammed and the last set was memorable. It was a Wednesday night .... not as frequented as the weekend so management allowed us to stay for the three shows and served fried chicken. Armed Forces Radio recorded the second set. I felt fortunate to be there.

This reminds me of an old friend, Bert Dahlender, who played drums with Chet occassionally. A fantastic drummer and person who is gone now.

i can't even count the amount of times i've seen and played this clip on youtube in a very special moment in my life: my period of time when i was doing my masters five years ago. i used to listen into chet when i was doing my assignments and advances for the thesis. the only worry was to have was the approval of my teachers. just getting hooked up on studying and writing. this was a beacon of hope, inspiration and well being. i hope someday to visit amsterdam and pay my last respects to the last places he saw when he was alive, including the hotel he fell 33 years ago. such a tragic death. beautiful memories this music transports me into.

I can just tell you I play this over and over. Its a classic to me.

The best jazz concert i've seen so far......MUCH LUV & RESPECT Mr BAKER ....wish u was still around but anyway will hold on to ur music until i stop to breathe R.I.P Brother

Although Kind of blue is still my favorite album, Chet Baker is my favorite artist. One big regret is that I never got to see him preform, even while I lived next to Amsterdam. I was too young to understand his music then. I discovered him too late.

Sort of same here, I suppose. I used to work at the hotel in Amsterdam at which he often stayed before he moved on to the one at which he passed away. I was in my early 20s. I knew who he was, and I did sometimes listen to jazz (there was this 11-to-12pm show on Dutch radio, I think, or maybe it was after midnight; I don't remember what it was called), but it takes a while, I guess, before you really start listening to jazz, with more understanding. But back then, Richard, we also didn't have KZread. These days, we can discover all sorts of wonderful talents that might have passed us by back then and we wouldn't even have known. I think I was always a bit more partial to Miles Davis and I suspect that it's related to the lack of sadness in his playing (also the purity of his notes). But I've only listened for a few minutes now and I'll listen to the rest later. I don't think I'd run into live video of Chet Baker before. I did go to lots and lots of concerts, mostly classical, and dance performances, mostly modern, in those days, and even unusual concerts at the Stedelijk etc, but somehow, I never made it to the Bimhuis. Weird, yeah. I think I know what you mean. Potdorie, Richard, ik keek hier nog even naar en ontdek vervolgens dat radio-presentatrice Meta de Vries een jazz zangeres was; ik betwijfel dat ik dat toen wist.

It's never too late to know Chet. Dear Richard van den Berg. Now I am 61, and luckily my father make me know him when I was a child. You know that Chet was also actor in many Italian Movies... but unfortunately, Italy, was also the Country where he was violently beaten, because in the early '60 heroin was not so usual. In my Country prisons our dear Chet was jailed, in Lucca Tuscany for less than 1 year. Chet was so handsome that was easy to be engaged in many black and white italian Films. That's why, a young 6 year's (old/young) child started admire a so sweet talented human person, and artist, as CHET BAKER was. Is. Still. Forever. And ever. Grazie Chet, di essere esistito. F@B.

That documentary completely ignores the late 60's into the 70's, especially the fusion scene! Don't overlook Tony William's Lifetime, Return To Forever, and Azymuth (great band from Brazil). Really interesting stuff for your listening enjoyment!

Such an amazing talent, One of the best trumpet players ever to inhabit this planet, such an emotional feel and beautiful tone, my favourite that's fo sho. So sad the dragon took him down.

I love how video starts with a man sitting, having a long face , where you couldn't exactly describe what he feels. Then we hear the countdown from the left as this man turns his head toward the man signalling. Pale and radiant blue color, signifying studio light, reveals that a man is probably sitting on a podium , or a cultural scene. He grabs the root of his trumpet and quickly starts playing. His emotion from before, we couldn't figure out , yet now, playing oh his instrument, he gives us all the full spectrum of his emotion but for the cost of hiding the words behind music, which is all in all, a perfect trade, and so is this beautiful craftsman of sound.

in James Gavins definitive book on Chet, 'Deep in a Dream', Chet was disgusted by Van's drunken performance and wanted him off the stage.

I absolutely love Chet

Same as I cannot speak Arabic, I cannot understand this form of Jazz. But I love to listen to it. I remember when I was very young listening to BBC Radio 2 on a small transistor radio late at night. Listening to this transports me back to then.

This is the first jazz video I recorded from tv on 2004-2005... I remember every note! Love for Sale: my favourite!

All Chet has done is a masterpiece and hearing it is one thing, but seeing him live shows his great human depth and his love for music to the end of his life ... The first song with Elvis Costello I cried like a child, absolute masterpiece.

Saw him at Ronnie Scotts in London 30+ years ago- the Embodiment of Soulful Jazz

Such a Tormented life he must have lived . Such a great player and Man. He could have given us so much more of his music to enjoy

Great show, very moving - I've watched this several times on dvd. Also, such a funny story by Chet at 22:05 about how he landed the gig with Bird - imagine a dim room full of all the best trumpet players in California and a voice on the intercom: "has Mr Baker arrived yet?" (most of the others probably just wondering "Baker who?") - and after Chet has played one track, the audition is declared to be over. HA! ;D

Raw soulful music since I was in 6th grade. Checked out his cd at the library and told my mom I missed placed it. The best thing that ever happen to me.

I think i've listened to this gig on CD a trillion times. It is marvellous in its entirety. I bought the CD a very long time ago because i was both intrigued by Van Morrisons appearance and curious to listen to their merging ... Both artists never let me down and I think that - whenever my time has come - this version of 'Send in the clowns' will guide me on my way out.

Yep. I remember what he looked like when I "discovered" him in the mid-fifties (I was in high school). I never saw him in person; but I had many recordings. Later, much later (I was probably early 40s)... I got to see Art Pepper at Pasquale's, a small jazz bar in Malibu, CA. He looked awful... so sad to see him that physically deteriorated... but he played sweet. He was totally there in his music. He was so far gone that he could only do one set. I was hoping to return when he played there again... but, he died shortly after the gig in Malibu. Rest in Peace, Sweet Man.

Awww thank you so much for this video in such a good quality. Chet is The Gift for those who appreciate elegant and exquisite jazz.

After years of recordings and online clips, I'm still listening.. A great musician and a sorry life.

Chet played & sang here from His bittersweet Jazz soul so tight & real.

What an artist ,what a Legacy I stayed in the hotel room where he died downtown Amsterdam ,near the train station. Eerily ,You can still feel him playing .. what a music legend ! DJEJ

Chet's solo on "If I Should Lose You", 23:30 min. WOW - it's so beautifully sculpted - the epitome of a melodic bebop solo. Chet glides through the chords, like the master that he is.

Can I add my total agreement to the above comments...I keep returning to Chet's solo in pure wonderment. Was going to add something nasty about Morrison and Costello's contributions but I won't...

One of the greatest.

I’m 22 and I envy these people so much. I’d give all my money to see Chet live.

I just love You Chet!

When I have had a bad day I will often listen to Chet and just let the day evaporate. I have a Japanese friend in Tokyo who has said the same.

Re Chet's last statement at the end of this vid, CHET was unbelievable in so many ways, but first and foremost he was an unbelievably talented musician whose trumpet playing and soloing was always so beautifully melodic and soulful.

Piano and bass are equally amazing! In love with their groove, like 35.00-45.00

its a good version, but i feel it needs more emotion. Judy Dench's version is deemed the best.
