Chet was so sharp here because he did not have access to heroin in Japan. Plain and simple. This is the most clean he had been in many years and it shows.

@@wallacecleaver4485 it’s documented that he only had access to methadone and alcohol while in Japan. The country has some of the strictest drug laws of any, especially so in the 80’s. Paul McCartney was jailed for 9 days after smuggling half a pound of pot into Japan, and if he hadn’t been a celebrity, could have faced 7 years of forced labor. I forgive you for calling me an imbecile, because unlike you, I don’t insult complete strangers.

Chet is the kind of guy most people brush off early as musicians, but somehow if you come back for a second round, you realize that there's so much more under the surface, and you get mesmerized, carried away. RIP Mr Baker, you will always be an inspiration.

I’m becoming a fan of that “cool” era of jazz but this a.m. is great!! Have always loved Chet singing My Funny Valentine. Lovin that era of jazz❤

I hope Chet hears me as he plays his beautiful music in Heaven. I love you Chet!

One of the best trumpet improvisation of all times, and I heard A LOT. Musical inspiration is out of this world, listen carefully to the choice of notes, how he smoothly tights the whole harmonic development together while at the same time playing only fresh ideas in a perfect construction - and of course as everyone else said, with such a deep and moving feeling... unreal performance here !

He can tell a whole story without words

I cry when I hear that horn...or the voice! Vaya con dios, Chet, and thank you so!

Tears well up as soon as the first note of that horn hits. Wow! This is as near to perfect as music gets.

Tokyo is a holy city for the jazz muse. Rock on Chet!

Music like this is addictive once you get a taste for it. I could listen to Chet Baker for hours.

This is the jazz I love. I love all kinds of music but I find that by reading the comments for jazz videos that the genres music fans are tthe fans that really know what to listen for in music. They understand that music is conversation, feel and technical prowess all harnessed into a musical canvas that, once created, may never be duplicated. This is what makes jazz musicians so unique and their fans so unique as well.

i did'nt like jazz.. i never learn it. Some mounths ago i start to play clarinet in a private school. Now, thanks to Chet, i play jazz every day and i could play it forever

I never Chet Baker and deeply regret it. He had such feeling for melodic sound---setting ones mood with every note. Just simply great expression and improvisation....what a great talent

Possibly his greatest performance. Certainly his chops were up for this one. Such depth of emotion.

I know that this song is particularly associated with Chet but no one sings and plays it like him. You've done me again Chet. Thank you.

The Live in Tokyo album is simply astonishing. His playing is on a different level to so many before and after this recording- just glad we got to hear him play like this!

Hauntingly beautiful

This version makes me feel emotional. Baker seems like a very poignant and sensitive person. Looking at his face while he plays I can see the ravages of time and experience. He really gets to the heart of this song. I love listening to his soothing voice and playing in the wee hours when I am studying and all is quiet. And his fellow musicians too, they are a great ensemble. Love you Chet Baker.

The greatest trumpet solo of all time --- it brings tears to my soul

A lot of the things Chet played - I can't get enough of. This however, even for Chet, is special. His "Autumn Leaves" with Paul Desmond is another I can't get enough of.

This music is truly made in heaven

Chet makes me cry, so melancolic, so beautiful, he put in your mouth your soul to play your trumpet and sing songs

I need more music like this. Some of these Chet recordings are straight MAGIC!

I think this is my favourite of all time. Such an outstanding performance.

Pure bliss. The audience was blessed to see such a performance. When I hear this song , this performance... the emotion is so raw , so real , so amazing , so powerfull, damn I wish I was there. Love this performance . his age increases the songs meaning like a fine wine. the sincerity he plays with. This is no b.s. this man has lived it at this point. He plays with experience and knowing and when I listen to this it brings me to tears that something can sound so good , so real.

I don't know why, but I only cried when I looked at and listened to this video. Chet defintely was the boss of bosses, a kind of messiah!!! For sure we will never see and hear in our lives a more gifted talent than he was...

Precisely! ...It's music from HEAVEN! ...No other way to describe it. ...Chet brought feelings from deep SOUL and HEART, and expressed them in the highest musical artfulness.

My dad & Mr Baker hung out together when he came to Pittsburgh he came over to our house all the time for a spaghetti dinner its cool that i broke bread with this man but even more amazing Chet said my dad was one of the best horn players he ever met and was one of the only men he respected in the music industry

True master artist with a lifetime of scars and experience coming out of that horn !
