Atkins for all of his ability, influence, and fame is always humble about his abilities and complimentary of others.

Tommy worshiped Chet and promotes Chet's name and memory wherever he goes. Both terribly humble people. TE more than willing to praise each every other guitarists skills, never envious or jealous. Lets hope somebody is inspired by Tommy in the same manner to carry on the spirits of fingerpickin.

Chet Atkins was a better stand up comic sitting down than most stand up comics. Side act for a singularly legendary, musician guitarist and really, above all, gentleman.

So glad this popped up in my feed in 2023 and to get to see Chet and Tommy interviewed, then Tommy play!

Chet had cancer when this was recorded, but he made it to the millennium plus a year and a half. Chet was so likable and a great performer.

The best people always leave us too early...

About 5 years ago at Tommy's concert here in Christchurch, New Zealand, I was sitting in the front row and after one of Tommy's lightning fast songs, I called out "Tommy, you're going to have to slow down - I CAN'T HEAR THAT FAST!!" Tommy, and the whole audience laughed like hell!! I don't think I've ever heard any other guitarist with his speed, dexterity and accuracy!

my grandma was Chets cousin....its an honor to be related...I have struggled to play for 25 years, but my son is a natural...all in the genes I guess...

Wow, the host tells Chet that he's praying for him. You'd never hear that on TV today, way too many people would be offended. I say screw them, this is great music and great inspiration.

I met Chet briefly, when he came to the UK. Before his arena performance in Bristol city, he visited a record store in that place, close to where I was working. I got to hear he was in there signing copies of his CDs--and performing some requests. I tried to ask him some questions--but he couldn't understand my Bristol accent--and i could hardly understand HIS country DRAWL either. He signed my 2 newly bought CDs--even though I had bought them already some weeks before. I attended his fantastic open air concert the night after---one of the best evenings ever.

Chet-the guy is hilarious in that understated way, and seems barely to notice that everyone recognizes he’s a guitar genius.

Tommy always puts a smile on my face. :)

This is what you call MASTER CLASS!

Chet Atkins was a gift from God to all the world, I was fortunate enough to have known him and he was very sick at the time this show was aired. He knew that his life would not last much longer, but he was and still is the best friend a guitar ever had!!!! He blessed the world with his music !!!@

Tommy has incredible finger strength. When Chet said "Amazing" he really meant it. It IS amazing.

These are two of the finest guitar players the world has ever seen. Anyone who plays guitar can tell you their techniques and skill are world class.

Anyone who doesn't like Tommy and at least appreciates his talent, and then leaves bad comments is an idiot. Probably just jealous no talent envious people who will never achieve what he has through hard work and dreaming the dream. He's an example to all of us. Dream big. Tommy, you're the best and not just as a guitarist, but as a human being.

Dear old Chet. He meant such a lot to so many and never any slease or high key heroics except on the guitar! That's my mentor; so glad I chose you Chet. Lung cancer & brain tumour eh? Thanks for so much Chet RIP.

Holy moly, I had never heard of Tommy until now this being 2022! But ol Chet the TN plow boy i grew up listening to him me being an ol Tn plow boy also! I was just listening to some of Tommy's playing and i don't believe i have ever heard anybody get so many diff. sounds out of a flat top all at the same time!! He has just about got that box beat up as bad as Willie Nelson!!! love it,

Now that I understand music I can usually just listen and figure out a lot. But back when I did not know any music theory - no scales, keys or how to build chords - it was a total mystery to me. For someone in that position, I'm still amazed they can do it. I did figure out what is called ' the CAGED system' on my own. I thought I had discovered something new!

How nice for Tommy to grow up learning Chet's way of finger picking all the way from the "Bush" country and then finding his way to the States to meet and perform with Chet and impress him as much as he impressed Tommy from a young age.

Chet Atkins was one of those rare gentlemen that enrich people's lives - I think Tommy is also one of those guys, generous of spirit and so talented it blows ya mind! Inspiring men...

Mr Chet Atkinson was my inspiration to Lear the guitar when I was about 12. Much later came Tommy and @ akannecortich8197 8yrs. ago stated, “both terribly humble people “ is very true. At 78 today, I don’t claim to be anything like my guitar heroes but I still play the guitar and record at home. So RIP my’Guru’ Chet 🙏and keep going Tommy Emmanuel as you are like no other 🎸👏

As amazing as Tommy is in this video ... It's obvious that he has gotten even better since then. His playing now has reached a whole new level. The subtleties of control and phrasing have grown into mastery. Thanks for sharing this video!

I don't know about a better guitarist but one thing is for certain, NOBODY has more fun playing an instrument than Tommy. That counts tons. Being a great player is one thing but portraying that without having your nose stuck up in the air and actually enjoyed the heck out of yourself is quite another.Tommy has a blast and in that he's a blast to watch and listen to.

That was the quality of TV show in that time

I've seen Tommy perform a few times, once in a friend's living room. His enthusiasm for playing and his enjoyment of people just radiates from him. He has to be one of the nicest people that I have ever met. Of course, his mastery of the guitar speaks for itself.

@@allymayful To become that good your ego has to go out the door. You have to practice the things you know and the things you don't until you can't stand it any longer (20 hours a day maybe?)

I saw Tommie do an hour show at CAAS last week in Nashville. He played this number again after all this time. If anything he is better than every. He did a very emotional and moving tribute to Chet. White hair now. Also got to meet his wife and new little daughter Rachael. Ron

Wow, two of the greatest! Don't try to compare them--just enjoy them both!

This is 50% Performance (by a GREAT performer), and 75% Virtuosity of an absolutely undeniable caliber, which means (yes, your addition is correct), this is 125% Artistic Genius. Chet finally has an heir, and he knows it... He lived to see it. This makes me very happy. (Lenny Breau seemed to be that heir, for a time, but he couldn't shake his demons.) Addendum, 2 years later: And so, TE is introduced to America by Chet, and TNN... ...and the rest is history.

Love Tommy! Saw him in concert several years ago and I consider myself very lucky. I'd never seen him this young before, though. Great video, and so great to see him with Chet.

Saw him in Leeds 2 yrs ago, and will never forget that performance ! His range of style`s, from superb ballads, to 100 notes a second blitzes - leaves one "Tomshocked" He plays with such an exquisite "feel & timing", leaves you breathless !! Tommy is the best ? - by a long way !!!

Somehow Tommy manages to maintain his humble nature. “Oh yeah, I learned by ear from listening to his records as a child. Chet’s amazing!” Chet’s greatest legacy is Tommy Emmanuel. Couldn’t thank him enough.

For guitarists, receiving the label of Chet Atkins Certified Guitar Player was once one of the greatest honors they could have received. The late Chet Atkins is still considered by many guitar players to be one of the greatest players the world has ever seen. Chet Atkins lived nearly eighty years and led a successful career as both a virtuoso guitar player and a record producer for artists like Elvis Presley, Waylon Jennings and the Everly Brothers. He developed his own fingerpicking style of play that utilized the thumb and two or three other fingers on his right hand. This technique has proven extremely difficult to learn, and because of this, the sounds he produced using it are very unique and unmistakable. Atkins won fourteen Grammy awards in his lifetime and was the Country Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year nine times. Tommy Emmanuel is one of the few who hold the Certified Guitar Player label. Atkins self-applied the term, of course, and he only bestowed it on other guitar players who he considered the most deserving. By the end of his life, only five guitar players (including Atkins himself) were ever awarded this prestigious, yet lighthearted, honor.

Tuck Raisor was number one on that list other than Chet. He and Chet spent Chet’s (almost) entire career playing together in Louisville KY and Tucks house. They met at the beginning of Chet’s career as a celebrity and became lifelong friends with Chet asking Tuck to go on the road with him. Tuck gracefully declined because his wife Alice didn’t want him to go….. Facts. 😉

Tommy, one of the very few Chet Atkins “ Certified Guitarists” , is a once in a life time talent and a man whose humble and appreciative nature has endeared him to millions of listeners and earned the respect of the world’s finest guitarists, the great Chet Atkins perhaps chief among them!

I saw Tommy for the first time in 2009. It was the 2nd time I was speechless walking out of a concert. The only other time was Hendrix at Winterland in `68. I hope their respective fans will forgive me for saying I can't decide which was better.

I really can't see why anyone would post anything negative about Tommy Emanuel apart from utter jealousy.. Tommy is the most down to earth, gifted acoustic guitarist there is.. The guy doesn't have the big ego that many do..It's not beyond Tommy to play a duet with a KId who is starting off.. Also Tommy claims there are others out there better than him.. I personally can't think of any ..

There is no "best" in music/ guitar, there are listeners, beginners, novices, and accomplished players (musicians) - Tommy Emmanuel is a very accomplished guitar player. Tons of other guitar players (of all genres) that are just as good & on the same level as TE -many, of whom, you & I have never ever heard of (& probably never will...)

I loved Chet and am so proud and jealous of Tommy at the same time. I love that story about filling the guitar with dirt and dragging it around with a rope. Those flatpicking runs Tommy does with a thumbpick are unreal. What are the rest of us supposed to do to try and build on the foundation? I can't imagine.

I remember one of the first times I saw Tommy Emmanuel and my mouth hit the floor . My uncle played a lot of Chet Atkins and he was very very skilled at it . And he told me that no one would ever really touch Chet Atkins finger picking and I knew then that this was something special .

I attended Tommy's Master Class a couple of years ago. A great performer, a great teacher and a great guy.

Tommy so naughty and Chet always dry and sober. People did love Chet the man with an enormous gift for playing nice and pretty who was so modest and so generous to other players. That damned cancer is ravaging everybody I loved. We are so lucky to have these KZread snippets. The musicians musician with a laid back wit who made 77 years and left an indelible mark. For Tommy's playing to impress Chet is no mean achievement. We see why right here. RIP CGP and thanks.

Tommy used to play back up for his brother who was better than him at that time. They play different styles. Of the two, I appreciate Tommy's playing more. He is such a genuinely nice person. We spent some time after one of his concerts talking about the Album with Chet. He pulled out his guitar and did a bout a 45 minute private concert for me and my wife while we talked about Chet and the recording process on the album. What an evening. If he's anywhere near, go see him.

Thanks for this! I've been trying to find this clip forever! This was my intro to Tommy Emmanuel back when it aired and I was lucky enough to have a vhs tape handy to pop in and catch the performance. I wore that tape out!

I really appreciate this set of clips being put up. This is something I would never have seen. LOL..I'm just geting to Geetar Boogie. Always a crowd pleaser. This has to be one of the greatest music stories ever. Here's a guy who's biggest influence is arguably the best guitarist of all time, and he gets to not only hang with him, but become close friends. I'll always miss Chet. Thank God for Tommy. I had the pleasure of meeting Chet in the mid sixties at RCA Studios in Nashville. Indeed, he is a Country Gentleman, from the heart. Humble and hard working. He took the time out of his busy day, while recording Floyd Cramer to introduce himself and others. Chet built from Merle Travis and perfected it. Tommy learned from Chet. I wonder who will learn from Tommy?. Steve Vai said that after Tommy, no one will play like these greats anymore. I sure hope he is wrong about that. You just can't beat a good fingerpicker. Nothing comes close to a band in a box (guitar) like finger style.

+Robert Little Jerry Reed took what Chet did and advanced it then Buster Jones advanced that.... but you don't hear much about them.... but Chet was a more all round player with many different styles from what I've read Chet got the basics from Merle Travis ( 2 finger?) and not knowing better because he was listening to audio of him and not seeing him in person used 3 fingers to try and copy what he did. and I seem to recall that Merle was influenced by black players from the south.

I am not even a fair guitar player when it comes to the greats, BUT I AM a guitar affectionardo, and I have heard literally hundreds of great guitar players over the years. And like Tommy, my dad loved Chet Atkins.... which reminds me of an interview that I read many years ago after Jimmy Hendrix died. Which caused me to understand how good great guitar players (which I am not one of) knew when they heard other great guitar players..... Jimmy was asked by the interviewer, how it felt to be the greatest guitar player in the world. Jimmy said, I wouldn't know, you would have to ask Roy Clark or Chet Askins. Eric Clapton's reaction to Stevie Ray Vaughan the first time he heard him on the radio. Both statements and reactions are similar to when I heard Tommy for the first time. Like Albert King facitiously saying to Stevie Ray... you are already "pretty good"! 😂 But you are going to be better! The first time I saw Tommy play, I KNEW that I had just witnessed the greatest guitar player, ever. His humility helps to make him so great. And he brings out the best in others. I cannot wait to see him in person. I have NEVER wanted to meet someone so bad in my life. And I am 63, so I have been to many "rodeos"!

We live in a world of over-produced entertainment, colour saturated, glossy, where the performers are chic, quick with the quips, and entertainers play that medium. We're used to modes of sincerity, humour and passion, but not so comfortable with individual and unusual expressions of the same. Tommy does his own thing, and his jigging and gyrating comes from the truth of his originality. Some people don't get it, but more than enough do. His joy is uninhibited. Most performers tailor that.

RIP Chet and yes you did make it to see the millennium.

The host is Gary Chapman, the former husband of Amy Grant. Chet was doing very well for being ill for so long, as he described. Tommy was on fire, as usual. One of his first appearances on US TV.
