Chessie System SD40 leading a nice consist at Spartanburg, SC (1988)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Back in 1988 the CSX line south of Spartanburg still used cabooses, while the line north of Spartanburg had reached an agreement with the crews to run cabooseless trains. This resulted in northbound trains setting out their caboose after arriving at Spartanburg, and southbound trains picking up one before departing. This video clip starts out with a unit coal train crew putting their power on the train. A local crew then arrives and quickly gets their 3 engines out of the way. The coal train then pulls forward picks up a caboose. After a lengthy brake test, they finally depart southbound with a friendly wave from my conductor friend on the caboose. Also note that this was back when there were still 5 man crews.

I lived in Orange Park, Fl. back in the late 80's. I remember seeing Chessie and all the others running on the mains behind my Grandpap's house. even got to see the first CSX paint jobs. thank God I was alive back then. I'm 30 now. got to see a bunch of things so far in my life.

I've loved trains since I was tiny... Born in 1986 so my real good memory bank probably begins in 92 or 93...but my head contains glimpses of 89 and 90...i remember seeing Chessie and seaboard system but never any scl or L&N ..maybe I'm chasing my childhood through these old videos lol

God its like watching history, seeing all of the CSX engines in different paint jobs, units that are scrapped and other things that todays younger railfans (such as myself) didnt get to see. Wish i could go back to these days

These are the BEST years to model CSX!! A variety of paint schemes, plenty of choices of hoppers and plenty of schemes!! Drove down to Florida in '88 from Quebec on a family trip and fell in love with SBD/FLS schemes!! I'm modelling CSX's ex-Clinchfield North-end in N-scale and these vids are great!! Even though it's early CSX I'm modelling, I can do SBD, Chessie, L&N, SCL, FLS, B&O, C&O and Clinchfield(in TWO schemes) and it's prototypical!!

Tremor1975 yes those were good years for CSX. Now the paint on the motors is depressing.

Michael Stillwagner But the CSX Dark Future (YN3) scheme was directly inspired by the old C&O Blue and Yellow. But these old times looked amazing, so many colors and varieties of schemes. I wasn't around in the 70s and 80s but they were great times for railfanning.

The Chessie System would paint the ownership initials on each locomotive (C&O, B&O or WM) they owned. When CSX took over, they painted over some of these when the units were renumbered but left the initials on some of them.

A very used looking Seaboard Coast Line SD45-2 and an old C&O GP35. Lots of power on that coal train - 9,600 horses, I think. That lead Chessie SD40 and it's 2nd partner, a Seaboard System SD40,-2, illustrate the visual differences between the two models. I just subscribed. Loved The Southern and old Chessie and Seaboard.

I'm twenty-four, so I've never seen a Chessie locomotive in action. I do remember seeing cabooses when I was small. Thank you for these videos--they give a younger railfan like me a chance to see stuff they'd never see otherwise.

Ok found out some info on the engines. CSX 8424 Used to be WM 7573 WM 7473 was rebuilt as a SD40-2 then showed it was retired in look like 2012. CSX 8180 No info was said about it. more the likely retired. CSX 8960 Used to be SBD and SCL 2055. But it's listed as retired. CSX 3305 used to be L&N 2804. CSX 3274 not listed. it's listed as a Wide Body. CSX 4407 used to be C&O 3567 i saw Retired then I saw Road Slug CSX 2304. Looks Like the Caboose SBD 16437 was scrapped nothing was listed for it.

Hey, why on some Chessie's, it says "B&O" over the number? I know what B&O stands for (Baltimore & Ohio RR), but why is it on them?

  • @ejdsndnj

Because the B&O railroad own some of the chessie units they painted
