Early days of CSX action at Bostic Yard. (1991)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A light rain was falling, but that didn't stop me from getting out that day back in 1991. And there was plenty to be seen at Bostic, NC that day, as the yard was clogged with traffic. The video starts out with a local crew taking a loaded coal train out of the yard to clear up the Back Lead, with an all SD50 consist. A hi-rail comes in off the Charlotte Sub and stops at the new yard office, I was standing beside the old yard office shooting this which was in the process of being demolished. Then, 3 Seaboard System SD50's bring a loaded coal train down the Back Lead, that had just been made clear by the yard crew. And the hi rail begins to back towards the road crossing outside the yard to get off the track. A short time later the local crew returns to with the power off the 1st coal train and a local freight that had been tied down in a siding outside the yard, where they left the loaded coal hoppers they took off the Back Lead. Then an empty coal train arrives from Spartanburg, SC on the Blue Ridge Sub with some SD40-2's and a C30-7 leading the way. Another loaded coal train can be seen in the distance with a Chessie System SD50 leading that was tied down on the main line. And finally another empty hopper train arrives with 3 Seaboard System SD50's for power coming off the Charlotte Subdivision. Bostic Yard was really a pretty cool place to visit back in those days.

If I were the CEO of the new CSX, I would've said, "you know, that Chessie paint is so nice, let's just call the whole thing, '"Chessie System,'" and be done with it," lol! Lots of SD50s here. Read that some ralroads downrated the horsepower from 3600 (some later versions were 3800) to 3000 and they weren't as troublesome after that. Had the SD40-2 prime mover anyway. They also had electrical problems with them, too, though.

Classic old school RR power! Awesome video! Thanks for your efforts to upload these gems. It takes a lot of work to get it from VHS to KZread. Back then you just shot for your own personal pleasure or with a few friends. Who knew back then the whole world would be watching! ;)

Grainexpress Thanks! Yep, you are exactly right about your observations and know from your own experiences. I had no idea the audience that would be possible in the future when I was shooting these videos. Mostly just shot them for myself to preserve my memories of what I was seeing at the time and would also share with the few railfan friends I had back then.

That was the first place I started railfanning back in the late 80's and early 90's. Still even have video when the old office was still in service. Seen so much variety of power and paint schemes back then compared to now.

I love the old school era of railroading! It's a shame that CSX does not honor the fallen flag railroads with heritage units.
