    I sure appreciate our fire departments. Until a few years ago, I had no idea how deadly they are. Seriously. It wasn't until I went to a couple of the structure fire demonstrations they held for the public, that I truly began to understand. The heat, the smoke, the speed, the value of sprinkler systems, the training. Truly an impressive team of dedicated people. I'm not about to critique this video from my arm chair.

    Although they had members inside working the fire they spent too much time/energy applying water to smoke and visible fire when what was actually burning was protected by the intact portion of the roof. The exterior stream application was entirely ineffective unfortunately. I can’t speak to the interior operations or training level of this department but the only way that fire was getting put out effectively was to pull a lot of ceiling and attack the attic fire from inside. I’m a big fan a 2 1/2” lines but a coordinated and aggressive interior fire attack with 1 3/4” lines could have saved a significant portion of this structure.

    This is purely a speculative guess, but watching the tactics that were employed I’d wager that they were afraid to put personnel on the roof due to lightweight construction and limitations in experience and understanding of how to safely work over fire.

    Agreed, I wasn’t trying to imply they are scared of roof ops. This appears to be lightweight construction and we’ve all heard the horror stories of how unsafe they are to operate on. Initially we see a good amount of smoke coming from the windows above the garage but not much showing that the fire is in that part of the attic. My guess is there’s an effective firewall between the garage and main portion of the dwelling. I’m not convinced venting over that portion would have been beneficial looking at it again. Considering the portion to the right of the two story section auto-vented fairly early on there wasn’t much of a need to vent the roof, and I don’t really think it would have changed much in the way of stopping the spread. I have to go back to my original comment, this fire needed lines inside working the fire from below. You simply can’t put the fire out if you can’t apply water to what’s burning. The elevated master stream probably did a decent job checking the fire to a certain extent by shooting through the gable vent but otherwise was useless.

    Chief here. Again folks, only one angle, and no radio traffic to diagnose what was going on. The exterior hose tactics left me a bit puzzled...an interior attack seemed viable for the first few minutes (yes, there was a line inside), as the two outside lines could have gone in. As for the aerial, that was a 50’ Squirt, and was extended as far as it could go. Since that was the pumper supplying water, if they moved it closer they would have had to shut down all the hand lines; retract the stabilizers; moved forward; reset the stabilizers; and recharge the lines. In that situation, not an option from what was seen. Is what it is. Comments about construction are true...that kind of structure goes up pretty fast, thus the need to be aggressive with interior quickly before it gets up into the attic...really tough and dangerous for members at that point... Stay healthy all!👍

  • @FSD_1776

    @FSD_1776

    Poor positioning by the Engine but there was no reason to even flow the Aerial. 2 properly placed and flowed hand lines could have taken care of this fire with 0 problems. (considering it was a well trained crew) This looks to me like piss poor training and planning.

  • @UncleFred100

    @UncleFred100

    3 жыл бұрын

    Days Off Totally agree...if they had gotten inside quickly and did an aggressive attack, none of the other factors would have come into play. Again, we did not hear any radio traffic to know what went on. And, we don’t know how they were trained, etc. The very fact that the aerial was up and placed too far back is an indication that their tactics, such as roof ventilation, were suspect. I didn’t see a simple 24’ being thrown by anyone...hopefully a learning exercise for others. Be well all!👍

  • @ems324

    @ems324

    Yea, but what about the BLACK PUFFING SMOKE COMING OUT THE ROOF? The roof should have been vented immediately to prevent the super heated smoke and gases building to combustion temp. Upon arrival the the Chief's size up he should have put the pumper/aerial right in front of the house, extended the ladder (stabilizers; of course) and gotten guys up on the roof too vent it. That would have prevented the flash over of the attic and the fire getting out of control.

  • @ems324

    @ems324

    3 жыл бұрын

    Firefighting 101 VENT THE ROOF. Now when they need the aerial it's, according to you, too far away so they have to reposition the aerial to attack the fire through the roof that should have been vented upon arrival.

  • @UncleFred100

    @UncleFred100

    3 жыл бұрын

    George Raab Hey George...agree with you. If you read my comment, I mentioned the ventilation issue. I said they could have thrown a 24’ ladder up in about a minute and vented, making aerial placement less of an issue... In all my years, I think I used an aerial to vent on a two story maybe 5 times...the rest were using regular roof ladders and members hoofing it up there. Again, one last time, we weren’t there; we did not hear my radio CAN reports, nothing, and we don’t know interior conditions or where the fire was concentrated, etc etc. Hopefully a learning experience that did not cost any lives...👍

    @@mothermarylspeaking8989 These houses do have fire stops between them, its one of the reasons the fire did not spread to the second unit. Also, each wall & ceiling in the home is made of fireboard with a minimum of a 30-60 minute fire rating. What most people do not grasp is that in the majority of residential structure fires is that the primary fire load isn't the structure, but rather the contents. Further, fires tend to spread primarily because people leave doors open when evacuating during a fire or when away from the home. Simply closing a door to a room if there is a fire inside can DRASTICALLY reduce the chances of it spreading. In my career I couldn't tell you the number of fires I've responded to where the resident was away and closed all their doors when leaving. A fire started in a room, consumed much of it's contents, filled the house with smoke, but snuffed itself out due to being oxygen starved before spreading. The same for instances where the occupant discovered a fire and closed the door before exiting and calling, we arrive to find a snuffed out smoldering fire, or an active one still largely contained to that room.

However, I believe the placement of the ladder/ attack pumper would have been much more useful if it had been located more to the front of the structure. Apparently, the ladder was not long enough to reach the initial main body of fire. Considering the large amount of fire in the upstairs, the fire was well contained to the right end of the structure. I think the ladder was placed properly. When I went through the Driver/Operator course for my fire dept, one thing they taught us was when doing a windshield size up, look at the size of the home, and if it should collapse, will it hit your rig. That front gable wall if it were to collapse would most definitely end up in the street and on top of the ladder truck, rending the ladder truck now useless. Good placement in my book.

    @@Matthew37128 Yeah you always want to spot out of the collapse zone. But a tower ladder master stream being the first thing you setup on a townhouse fire? That doesn't make sense unless you have limited resources. Obviously we all work in different areas with different circumstances and I'm fortunate to be in a large well staffed professional city. And the only reason I even bother to comment is for other people to learn. If this were in my city the first truck would probably split, 2 guys performing search and 2 guys to the roof for vertical vent. The first 2 available engine companies would probably have gone in and put the fire out. Obviously there are a ton of other tasks that need to be done; IE exposure protection, water supply, salvage, etc.

    @davidrossman7925

    3 жыл бұрын

    I don’t necessarily think that statement is true for all circumstances. Fire through the roof is definitely a well established, hot fire but if you look at this particular fire you can see that it is a working attic fire. An elevated master stream will work for the exposed fire directly around the failed roof but it will do absolutely nothing for the fire burning through the rest of the attic. Attic fires are more effectively controlled through the use of aggressive interior fire attacks and a lot of hard work. You cannot put an attic fire (or any fire for that matter) by just applying water to smoke or visible fire, you have to apply water to what’s actually burning. My statement is supported by the footage we see, the elevated master stream and the exterior hose lines are completely ineffective. The master stream is checking the fire spread through the gable vent at best since the stream is only hitting one isolated spot within the attic. The hand lines are only hitting visible smoke and fire and doing absolutely nothing to the fire burning underneath there intact portions of the roof.

A garage caught on fire and it spread quickly and damaged a few other homes and garages. The newer homes were built fast and looked nice. Imagine how effective one line to the second floor, and a hook would be?

    This is how firefighting is done in post Soviet block countries. They spray water from outside and hope for the best. 90% of complete loss of structures in most of the outcome. With more loose building codes written in favor of real estate/construction industries, homes in North America melt very quickly without rapid, aggressive internal attacks from fire departments.
