Cherry Hill Park - Billy Joe Royal 1969 (ext. ver.)
Ойын-сауық
Recorded by Billy Joe Royal and penned by Robert Nix and Billy Gilmore, "Cherry Hill Park"
reached the #15 spot on both the Cash Box and Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1969. The song is a
suggestive story about the morals of a local girl and those of the guys that idolized her. Although the Cherry Hill Park in the song never existed, some local radio stations refused to play it, and the
residents of Cherry Hill, New, Jersey weren't happy about it either. During a interview, Royal was
asked about the inspiration for the song and he said a friend of his once visited Philadelphia and
mentioned seeing Cherry Hill, New Jersey in the distance and casually commented "hey, Cherry
Hill, 'merry' hill". The reference somehow made it's way into the lyrics of the song as the main
character, "Mary" Hill.

Great song I was 14 yrs old back in 1969, so was my girlfriend. We would sing this song to each other. She would tilt her head and give me the cutest grin and sometimes wink as we sang this song together. Love to return to 1969.
Nice classic of the past.
That song sounds great like when I heard it at16 years-old. This extended version is terrific.
Thanks for uploading this great song. 1969, I was 14 yrs old and in love with my cute girlfriend. Even though we were 14 yrs old, we knew exactly what this song was about.
I spent some fun times with a few "Mary Hills" in my youth. Innocent moments do pass away.
While in Virginia at my Uncle & Aunt's house. All of us were having a barbecue and enjoying each other. I was Holding my girlfriend Debbie and sitting next to my Sister Eva. My Aunt Rose was with us as well. my Aunt, Uncle, and my cousins were dancing to some oldies music. My uncle started to play this song and soon I started to shake and tears were coming out of my eyes. Debbie started to cry thinking something was wrong. Then I gave my Sister Eva a very soft Cuddly kiss and said, " I love you Eva"!!! Eva then said,, " I know what my brother is thinking"!!!! Then my mother knew was coming. Eva and I started to dance and everyone felt the love & passion Eva & I had for each other. We danced holding and kissing each other with tears in our eyes. Then much to our surprise my Aunt Rose came out and danced with us as well!!! Later my mother asked my Aunt Rose why she danced with me and Eva. My Aunt Replied, " I used to watch Eva and Allie dance as children and I could see the love they had for each other. I am learning a lot about love from them. they have taught me a lot in a short time. I see the love in Debbie's eyes when she is with Eva And Allie. It makes me feel so wonderful when I see Debbie with them knowing that Debbie deeply loves them!!! It also makes me feel wonderful knowing that they love me as well. My mother then said, It made me feel so wonderful watching Eva & Allie dance knowing how much they deeply love each other as children. 🥰🥰💞💞❣❣❤❤🌩🌩🌩⚡⚡⚡🌀🌀🔥🔥

Haven't heard this song in decades and I thought I knew my '60's and early '70's pretty well. I was 17 and yes, I did have my Cherry Hill girl during lunch break....at the park...with a few Rainier Ale's. Loved going back to 6th period...feelin' alright! However, my true love happened shortly after, and our song......IF by Bread in '71.

Cherry Hill Park in the song is a ficticious place and doesn't exist in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Back then, the song was banned from the radio stations due its suggestive nature. Today is a different story so it should add a little flavor to your project. Thanks for your comment.

Glad you brought it up. I saw that the last sentence my description is misleading. "merry hill" was the inspiration for the use of the name "Mary Hill" in the song and is not referencing a actual place. I corrected the part. From what I have read, a "Cherry Hill Park" (unless by some other name) never existed in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, but was used as a fictitious focal point, and title, when the song was being written. Hope that makes sense.
Ah Mary Hill, the Garden State slattern.
