I just want to clarify the mothers role. She was with her daughter and this monster the whole time and when she allowed him to take Cherish to go to the McDonald’s with him , they were going to a McDonald’s inside the Walmart store itself. She made HUGE mistakes and I still believe that she owns a huge part of the responsibility for her daughters murder but I also believe that she knows this and won’t ever find peace while she still breathes.

This evil beast prayed on the vulnerable, he makes me sick. Mom made glaring mistakes. Her financial vulnerability helped her into making the worst decisions in her life. The mom also seems somewhat, slow, which I think helped the situation to escalate. I do believe that she should not have her other children in her custody due to her inability to keep them safe 🙁 Sadly, this mom paid the highest price for allowing her desperate need for money to over ride her natural instincts which were telling her this whole situation was not right.

@Ryan Smith yep she sure did. She sold her daughter for a Walmart gift card that in the end she didn’t even receive I don’t think. I am not disputing that. And just because my perception is minimally different doesn’t mean I think that she’s a saint and completely naive about the danger she put her daughter in. She states very clearly that she had a gut feeling that this man was up to no good. She gambled with her daughters life hoping that he was sincere and that’s the difference I am commenting on. Yes it’s tit for tat but for me there is a difference between being extremely stupid, hoping to get something and blatantly handing over her daughter in a cash transaction. And this is only a discussion not a debate . It doesn’t change anything but it is a platform which gets people thinking and becoming aware of all that stupidity and evil that is everywhere these days.

Inadequate, weak and woolly-minded people become parents every day, prioritising their lives and their children all wrong. And predators prey on the weak, scenting blood a mile off just like a shark. This evil paedophile summed up that mother's weakness within seconds of watching her. And he moved in for the kill. Had she been a responsible parent, he would not have approached her. A good mother is a tigress around her kids, she radiates strength and woe betide any stranger who gets too close to them! I can’t even grasp why the mother would ever even consider going anywhere with an absolute stranger, let alone bringing her children too. I understand financial struggles. I really do. I felt the exact same way. This mother kept saying how she knew something wasn't right before they even got in the van from how he snapped at her but still ignored that first red flag. I actually counted atleast 4 red flags that should have alerted her before she allowed her daughter to go with the same questionable stranger to the McDonald's located somewhere in the store but away from the mothers view. This mother failed her daughter miserably in every way possible and should have been held responsible for not protecting her. Heck she basically handed her to him.

I think that Smith having his lawyers in court represent him so badly to ensure that he'd receive the death penalty was exactly what he wanted. His big fear was that he'd be killed by other inmates. He's a career criminal + probably is well aware that those on death row have their own cell, are protected from other inmates, + usually die of natural causes before being executed. Now the mother, Raine, was directly responsibly for Cherish's death. She had $60 to buy "item's for Cherish" - she had enough money to buy the dress she wanted. I believe she wanted that $150 gift certificate so bad that she let Smith take Cherish to the dressing room alone with him, allowed him to be around her, + allowed her to go off with him in exchange for the certificate. It's the same relationship she had as a stripper with her customers. Cherish had no experience on her own about who to trust but her mother, by allowing him so close to her, indicated to Cherish that Smith was safe. This was really such a tragic case for a little girl named Cherish. R.I.P sweetheart 💐

If a mother made that type of decision that would send most of us running (creep o meter) ... what other bad calls is she making at home. Allowing him to take her daughter to change room?! Allowing a complete stranger (when you yourself said you had suspicion?, take your daughter for food? There is no victimization of the mother and manipulation (as the woman (judge) in video states). There will always be sick people amongst us but it’s up to the parents to protect from these individuals when possible. The medial examiner retired not long after her testimony for this case. Smh, such a necessary work those professionals do for our society. It requires such mental fortitude. As I went into my studies, I knew I didn't have it in me to be go into investigative examiners. But we all have a reaching point. If any, this case would be it. What she described breaks your core to hear. Thank you for your service ma'am.

Such a sad story because of how preventable it was ,also another huge problem is how these predators are barely ever punished they need to be in jail for at least 30yrs if not life

Seen this a lot with kids in the foster care system who came to live with us when I was a kid… Moms who know the person is weird but they don’t care because of what they hope to get for themselves aaannddd… Many, many times the kids said they heard their parents offer them up. Makes me seriously question whether this woman who no doubt is an addict by looking at her, hoped he would offer to pay more for total alone time with her kid. Instead he just took her without paying. I feel like that is why the mom is actually distraught. Sick, disgusting excuse for a human being she is as well. I feel so bad for the child but not the mother. Wish this little girl ended up in our home to have a real family like all the other kiddos who came to live with us. She deserved so much better in this world.
