Ionic Bonds are electrostatic attractions between oppositely charged ions. Covalent Bonds involve the sharing of valence electrons. Ionic Bonds and Covalent bonds are both considered STRONG intramolecular forces. But do you know which is stronger? You'd think this was a straightforward question. But there's more to it!
Each of these bonds has a range of strengths. In this video, we'll discuss how the strength of Ionic Bonds and Covalent bonds are measured so you can compare two chemical bonds.

About our instructor:
Kimberly Hatch Harrison received degrees in Biology and English Literature from Caltech before working in pharmaceuticals research, developing drugs for autoimmune disorders. She continued her studies in Molecular Biology (focusing on Immunology and Neurobiology) at Princeton University, where she began teaching as a graduate student. Her success in teaching convinced her to leave the glamorous world of biology research and turn to teaching full-time, accepting a position at an exclusive prep school, where she taught biology and chemistry for eight years. Kimberly co-founded Socratica Studios.

You are so kind, Claudio, thank you! This kind of understanding really does come from years of puzzling over the material until it becomes clear, so you're not alone! But really, this is what we are aiming for by using subject experts. We only teach the subjects we know and love.

Yeah but in exams they ask which one is stronger covalent or ionic so which one should you choose? There is no other choice so i am confused some say ionic some say covalent. This video doesn't help much for the stupid exam questions but was informative. Why do they ask stupid questions?

In a vacuum, ionic bonds require more energy to break than covalent bonds. However, in solution, covalent bonds are stronger than ionic bc the dissociated ions are stabilized via dipole interactions with the water molecules. So it just depends on the environment.

@@kori4580 this question was asked in our exam and the answer mentioned is covalent > ionic.. I think it's wrong.. We have an option to challenge wrong answers in the key. But we have to provide reference to justify our answer.. Can you plz mention a genuine reference.. They most probably don't consider online web pages.. A research paper.. Or a book is what that will help the most..

+Abdul rafayIMRAN This may help - think of comparing an ionic bond's lattice energy with a covalent bond's bond enthalpy. Which is stronger? It's going to be different for every different bond. That's why we can't simply say ionic bonds are stronger than covalent bonds - there's a range of strength for both kinds of bonds. Thank you for watching and commenting!

@@smilingaves4793 that has nothing to do with how ionic material look. Ionic compounds just tend to look like hard salts, that does not mean salts are the strongest solid material. Metallic bonds are much weaker then ionic bonds, yet metals have extremely high boiling and melting points, and are much much stronger than all salts; Does that mean make metallic bonds stronger??
