Thanks for showing another way of using super glue and recycling wood dust. I apologize if someone already said this but more, or less, the same applies using super glue (CA glue) and baking soda. The only difference is, baking soda and super glue creates a rock-like substance. So thanks again for showing yet ANOTHER way to use CA glue, Super glue, Krazy glue; another tool in the belt lol.

I've used this trick a number of times but a couple things you need to keep in mind: > the CA glue/sawdust matrix is considerably harder than all but the hardest woods and requires careful technique sanding. > the patched or filled spot will not take stain or finish the same as the surrounding wood.

  • @WoodworkingDIY

That is correct. It is as hard as acrylic and there is no finishing treatment. But if you know the shortcomings and use it, it shouldn't be a problem.

Been doing this for decades, but usually with CA (superglue/CyanoAcrylate) and baking soda for repairing R/C vehicles - makes for fast repairs in the field. I apply the glue first, then 'dust' the wet glue with the baking soda/sawdust using a re-purposed denture bottle. A re-purposed DIY inkjet refill dropper-bottle does fine too. If you need the hole bigger, just open it up a bit at a time with fine drill bits. Then repeat until the hole is filled. Sand and clean up, especially if you're mailing it. Customs once thought a kit I'm modified for a friend held drugs, and ripped it apart. He got a box full of parts. If you're not in a rush, using the re-cycled sawdust with carpenters glue to make a paste, it makes a color-matched filler for the project. Other trick is for making a hard coating for wood (works a treat on balsa!) You find something called "epoxy thinner" (used when re-enameling a sink or tub) You mix up a slow-set two-part epoxy (it's the easiest to use) and after mixing, add the thinner drop by drop, stirring every few drops. A Touch'n'Flow or other solvent glue applicator is best to add the thinner, or a glass pipette if you have one. Once you have it thinned to about wall-paint consistency, you can paint it on. First coat on a porous wood like balsa can use a milk-consistency mix, so it soaks into the pores. I used it on a balsa-planked boat hull, and it was stronger than a hardwood or fibreglas one. You can use this trick with regular wood glue (Tightbond, etc.) as well, and it tends to match the wood better than with CA glue. The advantage (or sometimes disadvantage) of CA glue, though, is that it will cure and harden a lot faster. For repairing large chip-outs and cracks, CA glue works better. For small repairs, I've found that regular wood glue works better, as the repair is much less visible. Either way, this method of repairing cracks, chip-outs, gaps, etc. has really saved more than one project I've worked on. When done well, you can't even tell that there was ever a problem.

I've run a ton of side by side tests filling voids and this is pretty much the simplest and best way.... However, I will add that if you premix the glue and sawdust, then pack it in, you will get a much better result and you only have to fill and sand once... you will avoid the voids.

However while they're not toxic, the fumes can really suck and irritate your respiratory system, especially in hot weather. I like to wear a respirator when working with it for a long while.

@@glasshalffull8625 no I haven't use for either of the ways you mentioned, but it does give me some good ideas. I had my thumb tore open pretty bad one time. No doubt I needed stitching up as you could see my ligaments and the bone very clearly (you could have used it in an anatomy class). I washed it out with hydrogen peroxide and glued it shut with ca glue. It never got infected or even inflamed and healed up quite nicely. You go to a doctor's office and see the doctor only to have him tell you, " You need to go to the emergency room. That will be a hundred bucks please." I've been there and done that one and didn't even get a t-shirt. It used to be you could go to your neighborhood doctor with a bad cut or a broken arm and the doctor would sew you up or set and put a cast on your arm or leg. But no more. And I don't know why. If you want to have some real fun and add color to your woodworking, try brass and CA. Ask the person who cuts keys at your hardware store to let you have some of the filings. Put the filings into the hole or crack you are trying to mend or embellish. Add the CA as in the video, The chemical reaction burns like napalm. Sand the brass down. Because the filings are not as fine as sawdust, you can fill in any gaps with more brass and CA. Any powdered stone or even dyed sawdust will work just as well as in the video.

I wonder how this compares in its properties (hardness, malleability, smoothness) with baking soda and CA glue. For wood this is ideal, but maybe it's also stronger than mixing CA with baking soda. The smoke coming out of the reaction seems to show it's very exothermic and quick.

I much prefer conventional wood glue and sawdust rather than CA glue. It takes much longer to set but it is stronger, seems to give a better colour match and won't melt as easily. It's not likely that the difference in strength will cause problems I guess, so if you're getting a colour match you're happy with it is mostly personal preference. If you're in a hurry the CA glue version is undoubtedly a better bet.

PVA works fine but it shrinks quite a lot since it is water based and for larger areas it can take a few days to fully dry, at which point you may have sanded and applied finish only to realize you've got an indent where it shrank. CA shrinks too but generally you'll see it before moving on and can apply another coat (especially if using an activator, it sets up in less than a minute)
