Chelsea 4 Liverpool 2 FA Cup 1997

Fantastic match. Liverpool conceded a two goal lead for the first time since 1964 at a frenzied Stamford Bridge.

Just found this after hearing of the passing of Gianluca Vialli. I remembered it being such an amazing performance from him in the 2nd half. I was gutted as a Liverpool fan at the time but the respect was there. Rest in Peace, Luca.

Big up 2 you sir.. Liverpool tore us to shreds in the 1st half. Sparky mark hughes changed the game. Some zola magic, and viallis movement for his goals was world class.

This match is one of my all time favourites. It was certainly one of the most exciting to watch. The first half Liverpool should have been out of sight, say 5-1 up, but that second half was all Chelsea. They were so doninant over Liverpool that once we equalised I knew then we were going to win and after the match, win the FA Cup. It seemed like it was destined as was Chelsea winning the Champions League in 2012 after beating Napoli when 3-1 down in the first leg.

They should have been. They roasted Chelsea in the first 45 minutes but they didn’t take all of their chances and against an attacking lineup including Hughes, Zola and Vialli their profligacy didn’t go unpunished. Seldom has the old cliche, it was a game of two half’s, been more accurate.

I went to this match and was gutted when Liverpool got knocked out. I will always remember the Chelsea chant "2 nil down, 4 2 up, knocked the scousers out the cup". RIP Vialli. 58 is no age. ❤

Mark Hughes loved to score against Liverpool! He just loved the big occasion and he scored in a few different finals over the years; in the FA Cup Final in 1990 he scored two in the first game, he scored two in the 1991 Cup Winners Cup Final, one in a losing cause in the 1994 League Cup Final and he scored United’s third goal in the 1994 FA Cup Final. For all Mark won with United he was a boyhood blue, so to win three different cup competitions with Chelsea was a dream come true for him.

@@AlexanderBuck1973 it was good business from Chelsea to pick him up as an impact player in 1995 at 31, for a bargain price of £1.5 million. Chelsea were ambitious and at the beginning of their rise and rise period. Hughes was an excellent, experienced, older pro who was able to show the younger lads how to go about their trade. It was no surprise that they started winning things soon after, especially when able players such as Flo and Poyet also joined up.

Watched this as a 13 year old at a house party. By half time we were all down and out. All the kids went outside and had a kick about in the street and I remember feeling totally dejected. went back inside, saw Hughes score and the whole mood changed. Will always be my favourite Chelsea game ever.

Remember it well, thinking at half time no way Chelsea can do anything against the mighty bin dippers. Years before Abramovich and his money took them to another level, Chelsea were getting their act together nicely back then. Will never forget the photo of scousers crying in disbelief, that was plastered everywhere.

This is one of my favourite games of all times. People ask me what’s my favourite game of all time and when I don’t say the Champions league In Munich people think I’m bizzare. But the Champions league tie against Arsenal Away is my all time favourite. All the losses we took against them meant nothing with that win. Up The Blues

I was with my gooner mate when we knocked them out of the CPL in their back yard. It really signalled a change of dominance over them for well over a decade. I loved the CPL win but to see the wind knocked out of Arsenal's sails was priceless. It was an incredible game to witness. Especially after all our beatings from the arse.

Never mind the final win against Middlesbrough, the semi-final win against Wimbledon at Highbury or scraping through in the quarter final replay at home to Leicester City, I truly believe that this is where we won the 1997 FA Cup. Not only that, it was also the night that Gianluca Vialli wrote his name into Chelsea legend. RIP, Luca. Gone way too soon.

McManaman was a strange player. He could smash a ball with real power from distance yet hit the ball with such little power inside the box, almost like he's wearing slippers. The game hinged on McManaman missing that sitter to shoot or pass to Fowler but the second half from Chelsea was inspirational
