Ramsay mentioned in an interview that the reason he's nice here is because these people aren't professional cooks, if cooking is your job and you're doing it wrong then he'll get mad at you. However these people are amateurs so nothing to get mad about there.

I think he only insults people who are professionals and are supposed to be trained and paid to produce good quality food, yet still fuck up horribly (like in Hell's Kitchen) but in amateur things like this and Masterchef he's a lot more sympathetic as they're just there to have a healthy competition and it usually comprises of just the general public who only cook for fun and/or necessity.

I don't know how much of his stuff you've watched, but he's actually really good about being positive with people. He's generally negative towards either a) professionals that SHOULD know what they are doing and fail or b) if someone is putting others health at risk with their actions. If you've ever seen the show where he fixes up restaurants, he goes off on people that have nasty shit in their kitchen. --- Now watch the other stuff such as the kids cooking show or when he goes to people's houses to help them. He's not negative with novice or non-cooks all together.

Really, he didn't fuck up the food, he just didn't get it on the plate fast enough. The guy is clearly a good cook. Timed competitions like this aren't realistic, and Ramsay knows it. Also, that guys an amateur cook, not a professional, so Ramsay isn't going to be quite as harsh. It's when you are claiming to be a pro, buy yet you aren't, that's when Ramsay get's pissed. He absolutely DESPISES fakes and frauds.

Ramsay is so awesome:) I love that he totally just grabbed that guy and really tried to lift up his spirits and let him know that he believes in him!! He's such a nice person, he knows what it's like, he's been there himself, so he always tries to lead through positive reinforcement as much as possible. But when it's time to get REALLY serious, HE gets REALLY serious. This show isn't about being serious, obviously ;D

I just realized that Gordon Ramsay and the Angry Video Game Nerd have a few things in common. For one thing, they are known for cursing up a storm. Second, their off character demeanor is vastly different than their "on camera" persona. Third, both wear white.
