Cheers to 75 years of KFMB TV and the Balboa Park Miniature Train

2024 is a big year for KFMB TV, this May CBS 8 will celebrate our 75th Anniversary. In this Zevely Zone, I went to Balboa Park to show off one of the ways we're commemorating the major milestone. KFMB TV is San Diego's first and oldest television station and to mark 75 years of success, we're sharing the spotlight with some of San Diego's oldest businesses that have been chugging for a long time too. That meant a trip to the Balboa Park Miniature Train.

Rode that little train so many times in the 80s. One of the highlights every time we went to Balboa Park

That was cute : ) One of my subscribers just invited me to go film / visit the layout in Balboa Park, and another guy recommended Old Town San Diego. So I definitely will be making a trip down before long for this ride and other train-related - and beach - fun : )

Being born in San Diego in 1960, now I'm in the 11th year waiting for HUD approval for a wheelchair access apt so I can move home from hemet before I die. 🙏. I just wanna go home.

I was born in Mercy Hospital in San Diego 77 years ago, grew up riding that train, running in and out of the zoo, museums, and the rest of Balboa Park. I remember the real mummy at the Museum of Man (scary) and the Zoo was free to kids under 16‼️🌻

I was born here in '59; I remember that real mummy too! Over the years I sometimes wondered if I had just imagined that. I seem to remember a sort of enclosed area, outside of the museum, and it was behind some glass - over near the area where the statue of El Cid on the horse is, or maybe not quite that far into the park. And the miniature train, yep, I rode that train many times too, I was fascinated by it. And the zoo. Another comment here mentions that shop, 'Frank the Train Man'; I remember that shop too, with the neon sign of the locomotive 'chugging' away, smoke puffing from the stack. Remember the underground walkway, over there by 'Frank the Train Man', that ran under El Cajon Blvd or Park Blvd?

The mummy from the garage in La Mesa is still in the Museum of Us (previously The Museum of Man). I loved this train as a kid!!!

@@checkpointcharlie1788 yep, and I think the mummy location you remember was directly across the street from the museum. At least that’s where it was in the early 50s😁🌻

@@clytiesunflower4655 Yes, that's exactly where I dimly remember it; I was so young but it made such an impression on me. So, I would have been seeing it in the early 60's, so it must have still been there, across the street from the museum as you say. What a trip!

Our grandfathers may have served around the same time. Mine was a chief warrant officer, played football on the Navy team, and was some sort of procurement guy. Early 1920s. 😂🌻
