I’m 19 and first listened to this when I was four because of my dad.

I listened to this for the first time in 1975, and to this day all I have to do is think of it, and I start laughing.

The original skit is from Cheech and Chong's debut album entitled, "Cheech and Chong." The album also has the second part of the skit, called "Waiting for Dave."

my father passed away last month, this was one of the last jokes we shared because his nurse was named dave. he introduced me to cheech and chong and i will always love you guys.

My dad used to play this record for me back in the 70's. Then we used to recite it when we went on road trips and drive my mom nuts! My dad is gone now too 😞

I always use this when I get those prospecting calls on my cell... never had anyone keep trying to talk to me after I say that -

I first heard this in 1967 right after i got out of high school. Funniest shit ever.

The original recording was done when Cheech was outside knoclinc in 100 degree weather and Chong would not open the door in the skit and made it funnier.

jo mana that's what inspired the recording. Then they recorded it bc they thought it was funny enough to be a gag on the album. They did not record him creating the gag bc he did it off the cuff after actually buying dope.

Chong recorded an original before they professionally recorded it. He says in an interview that the "original" recording is on a tape that he has.

Cheech has a video on KZread where he tells this story. Both of you have parts right. Tommy Chong went out to the car in 100 degree heat, Cheech was fooling around with the tape recorder. Tommy was locked out when the door had closed behind him. Cheech decided to try some improv comedy, as they occasionally did in their bar routines. Cheech was inside dying of laughter, Tommy was outside in the heat, pissed off and ready to kill by the time Cheech let him in. Cheech played the tape back for Tommy, and they both had a great laugh. It was a hit!

Still so funny in 2020 😂 I used to work in an office with 19 engineers all men, and I was their secretary.... and SEVEN of them were named Dave including our boss!!! 😂 People would come in and ask “Is Dave here?” And I’d look at them with an expression that said “Really...?” Best guys I ever worked with they treated me like I was their queen 👑💕

Tommy made a guest appearance on Nash Bridges years ago as a deli dude. Don Johnson and Cheech come in looking for a snitch named “Dave”. I was laughing the second I saw Tommy, knowing they were looking for a guy named Dave. Sure enough, Tommy says,”Dave’s not here!” lol

still great all these years later!!

After all these years their comedy still holds up! Up in Smoke is still hilarious!!!

It is one of the reasons I babysat every time i could. 50 cents an hour, but I had run of the house, and I played their records (very gently), raided the frig (if there was anything in there) and snooped through their stuff (never took anything) but found out who was into speed and other things...lol I remember the Big Bambu record, that came with the gigantic "paper"...!!! hahaha Ah, the '70's...!

I used to work for a VP named Dave. The warehouse lead manager had a meeting with all the other warehouse managers (8 or 9 people) and called to report and check in with my boss, Dave the VP. Dave truly was not there. I knew the WH lead manager very well. He did not announce that they/I was on speaker. He asked to speak to Dave, and as you probably have already guessed, I said, in my best Tommy Chong imitation, “Dave’s not here, man”. The other end of the phone exploded in laughter. In one sense I was embarrassed, but in another, I it was one of the best work days of my life.

A friend told me he was at a concert and ran into this young hippie dude. He said he sat down and heard someone yelling "Hey, Dave" for like 5 minutes and he finally turned around and yelled at him "Dave's not here, man" and said the young hippy dude just started laughing his ass off. That's all he wanted for someone to do. I wished it was my story, but every time I hear the name Dave, it's obvious, Dave's not here😂😂

So, I first saw this joke on Futurama, Amy talks to someone about hemp and he says "Dave's not here, man." I knew it had to be a reference to something. Had that vibe, y'know? Later I watched a Simpsons episode, same quote, mostly same inflection. Over the years I've heard this quote, usually when somebody's high on pot. Finally I'm here, finding out where the heck it comes from.... it's still funny, hahaha.

I did that to my sister one time, I pounded the front door and shouted “FBI OPEN UP” and I just heard clattering and the back door fly open. Didn’t see her for like 3 hours
