    I play a Jag SS. Love it! Just bought a new Bronco which I'm rebuilding. The frets can be deburred (carefully!). I've had a 2001 American Series Precision which I refer to as "the Bentley that never leaves the garage". It's just gotten too big! Great video.

    For about 10 years I played a Gibson SG bass (short scale). Over the years the neck dive and the finish (high gloss) on the neck itself really bothered me. I sold it and have been playing a Fender P bass with a jazz neck on it. Cool but still big for my little hands. Soooooo I just ordered the new Fender American Performer Mustang bass in 3 tone sunburst. It's not cheap but from all the reviews it should be awesome. It's supposed to arrive Friday....can't wait! Oh and cool video ;)

    Hi Di, nice video as always :) With the Jazzbass you can't go wrong, i have one, MIM and it plays very smooth. I also have the Squire Jaguar bass, I bought it when I was suffering from a frozen shoulder and I couldn't play on my full scale basses. It was cheap but did the job very well when I modified it a little, other pick-ups and a badass bridge.

    I love my Squire short scale jaguar. It's just like the red one you picture. It plays great and sounds great - BUT I did make considerable modifications. I used the hipshot KA bridge, HP6 ultralight tuners, duncan quarter pounders, and all new elctronics in a volume, blend, tone config. I really couldn't seriously play it without the mods. The thing is the neck and weight and general playability are great and worth the modifications. It's better than the new mustangs. total cost about 550.

    Love my Squire Jag SS, no sharp fret ends to speak of. I actually played a Bronco the other day and really dug the feel of the neck on it. Short scales are hard to come by but I prefer the playability vastly compared to 34" scale basses. I'd like to try one of Ibanez's "Mezzo" 32" scale basses but they didn't have any at the local GC. I also played (and ended up buying) one of the low end Squire Bullet Strats as well, kinda blown away with Fender's low end offerings these days. My first guitar 20 years ago was a used Squire Strat and I HATED that guitar... I never in a million years imagined I'd be buying another one. So I say kudos to them, even if their QC might be a little hit or miss. None of the Squires (Bronco bass, Bullet Strat and one of the Contemporary Jazzmasters) I played the other day had sharp fret ends on them or anything like that. Though something along those lines is a thing I'm comfortable fixing on my own workbench anyhow, if need be.

    I've been playing a no name PJ for a little over 10 years. Sounds good, especially since I put new P pickups in it and a short time later had a 3 way switch installed to use P separately, J separately, or both together. But this bass weighs like 10 pounds and feels heavier due to massive neck dive. I was trying to find out what basses would be lighter, but it's hard to find specific info except on really expensive basses. Then I found out some well-known bass players play short scale it got me thinking. For some reason I thought of those as for kids, but they are also good for adults with smaller hands or even some arthritis. That spoke to me. I was in a music store today and tested 2 short scale basses. A Mitchell MB100 short scale. I liked how it looked with the PJ pickup format. I wasn't as happy with how the fretboard felt or even the sound that much. Seemed very bassy and I had to crank the mids on the amp more to get my sound. The other bass I tried was a Squier Bronco. I plugged that in and it was near perfect with the amp eq's set in the middle where I started with the Mitchell. I also much preferred the feel of the neck. I looked at, but didn't test the Precision mini. That just felt too small, almost fragile. Same with the Ibanez Mikro. Really leaning toward the Bronco. I thought at first I wouldn't like it with just that single pickup, but somehow that provides a sound I like, not even all that different from my full size PJ. Also, that single pickup gives my picking fingers more room to operate.

    I have that Jag SS can’t remember what the frets were like when it was new, I go through them anyway and try and make them perfect. It was my first bass. The rest of my basses are standard Fenders. While I do prefer the rosewood fret board I have a Fender P bass that’s maple and is my travel/ money bass and I find that it’s easier to maintain and with flats is a faster player.

    I have a question about strings on short scale bass. I just ordered ( Backordered) the Squire P bass mini. It is ever shorter than a bronco, I think it’s 27 or 28 inches. Anyway can you use regular long scale strings on a short scale bass? What strings do you use? I have a Rickenbacker 4003 and a Fender Jazz Bass so I think the short scale will be fun to play plus it was only $180.

  • @realbeal

    @realbeal

    It depends on the bridge. My short scale bases have short scale strings unless the bridge is the kind that feeds the strings through the back. Then they use medium strings.

    Squire's can be hit or miss if you get a good one it's usually very good but if you get a bad one they can be pretty bad, that being said most of the classic vibe stuff is usually very good. Have you ever Tried the Ibanez gsr20 micro bass? Just curious I seen it on the guitar center web sight for $179 it has a pj pickup set up. Fender mim is usually spot on!!

  • @chrisbassman3936

    All the squiers need are a set up which might include fretwork but for how cheap they are...... . The classic vibe series is where its at. They are the best value for money and most definitely out do mim fenders and are on par with some usa ones too. It just depends on what you get not every squier can achieve the status i mentioned. I just bought a classic vibe jaguar bass medium scale. It is just what i expected. Very nice quality for the money and i like to upgrade the hardware but the bridge on this one is nice and hefty so i just replaced the tuners, gave it a set up and put some tapewounds on it. Sounds so sweet especially out of my 59 bassman i installed modern bass guitar speakers in just for more volume and wider frequency range. I might go back to roundwounds but my favorite steing set right now for my fender family basses are fender flatwound 45-100.

    The plumb jaguar I got my mate like brand new for a £100. It had a full pro set up and played superb. The only downside were the pick ups were a bit weak I felt. He has not played it much as he is a guitarist. Short scale are perfect for a guitarist jumping on bass. I have two MIM p basses but my main bass at the moment is my Sira V7 Marcus Miller in swamp ash. Picked that up off a pro bassist with a pro set up for £220 with gig bag . realbeal - I only started playing a couple of years ago. Bought a Gretsch short scale as although I’m relatively tall for a woman, I’m 48 and have had some neck issues, so SS seemed to make more sense. Loved the Gretsch tone and def keeping it. The Sterling Stingray SS was my gift to myself for improving to a certain degree :) Another much cheaper one I tried and loved though was the midscale Ibanez Mezzo 32” (sea foam green). Bought it initially and was v comfortable to play and lighter than the Stingray, but then switched within my 30 day return window and decided on the Sterling. it’s a keeper and the MM guys on TalkBass all raved about it... :) I loved the Ibanez and both are v flexible tone-wise. Although one is active and the other passsive with 3 way mode switch.

    I personally would not recommend lower end squier as the quality control is dreadful, some top end squiers are amazing like the 70s jazz bass, but save a bit more money if you want a short scale and go for a fender mustang

  • @kevincarey79
    @kevincarey795 жыл бұрын

    Quality control always seems to be an issue. Sometimes you have to play a couple to find a good one. Thats more understandable with the squiers, I guess. But, that also happens with some fender basses....I know someone who owned one of those fender mustang basses and it just wouldn't stay in tune no matter how it was set up! Wasn't a cheap bass either! On the other side of that, I ordered one of those Squire Jag ss's sight unseen (online) a few years ago, and its now my favourite bass. That bass has been used lots, gigging and recording at home. I guess I got lucky! If I knew I'd get the same quality, I'd buy another one just to have one with flats/one with rounds. It played and sounded great stock, the only difference is I upgraded the pickup (even then, the difference isn't HUGE). You were saying in the video, the slightly older jag ss (the red one) played better, and that doesn't surprise me either....isn't it kinda typical of any company to make a great budget product, get great reviews for it, then decide to keep making it and maybe...cut a few corners to make it cheaper? Also, I bet the newer ones have 'Pau Ferro' fingerboards, whereas the older ones have rosewood....not sure if that might make a difference? Either way, one thing is for sure: short scale basses are awesome. From my experience with just that squier bass....I dunno if I'd want to go back to a full-scale bass!!!!

I will say it isn't for me, because I couldn't really like a guitar much more than that Sterlingling short scale. The Music man is an ash body compared to a mahogany in the Sterling, has a sculpted cutaway, 5 neck screws instead of 6 and the neck is finished beautifully and also it has better tuners. I think the switchology is exactly the same and I suspect the pickup is the same judging from the what mine sounds like.

    Interesting that you skipped over one Squier short scale and passed by it more than once -- the Squier Bass VI which is also 30". Of course, it is more like a baritone guitar in some ways, though the notes would be the same. Personally, my favorite short scale is my Gibson SG bass, which is light, comfy, and has a deep and pure tone with the balanced flatwounds on it. It gets away completely from the Fender tone (which I mostly use, my main bass is a Precision) for a change of pace. Not sure I would go with any of those Squiers for short scale given that a Mexi Fender Mustang is less than $600 new and would be a step up in quality.

I also like it better than a MIJ Jag I had, although the MIJ is at least the same quality wise. The next best SS I've tried is the PJ Mustang, followed byt the Sq Jag SS (I've had 2, and still have 1 tuned BEAD), followed lastly by an Epi EBO.

    Sharp fret ends are common these days in mass produced guitars where the wood is not cured as well. But I had the worst on my Mexican Telecaster. It is a simple fix if you know what you are doing. I suggest that Squiers are a very good value but they do often require some attention to play really well and fretwork can be expensive. I do this stuff myself so I like them, but you have to be ready to spring for a really good setup or do the work. Or, you can shop until you find one that is really good. But still, frets can grow (and often do) on a guitar which is drying out due to climate or wood still curing.

    @@realbeal I have a bunch of guitars and basses. I have a Johnny Marr Jag and a slew of other guitars but I have two Squier affinity p/j style basses that I like very much. But I had to level and dress the frets on both and do a complete setup. They were a mess as they came out of the store. I just got a new Sterling (by music man...it is like Ernie Ball's version of their squier line) Stingray short scale bass. It is a fantastic bass for the money! It came in literally perfect. The fretjob is awesome, the bass was setup right to specs and the quality is as good as any bass I have played for under 1k. If you do not hate the sound of the Stingray, Sterling offers a bunch of versions for affordable prices and judging from mine, I bet they are pretty good! Might be worth taking a look at. And yes, buying a good older bass that is already setup the way you like it works too. Btw, I had to do a fret level and polish on my 1,700 dollar fender Jaguar too to get the action down. To their credit, it came fine but after a year at my house it decided to change shape a little...I guess the weather here doesn't match Southern California.

    Sharpness is not because the frets were not deburred. It is because the wood has shrunk due to being somewhat green or coming from a wet climate to a dry climate where ever you are. I find that is consist with most instruments made in the far east. I bought a nice p style bass and it was fine when I got it. Two years down the road and I was fret dressing the instrument.

    Could be the fret sprout was more due to the humidity difference in the store. It would be unlikely that Fender/Squier would let mult bass guitars out the door with that much sprout - if they are, then shows how/why other brands are making inroads on the big names. If you are going to compare short scales, why not look at Ibanez (two options) and Jackson? They both seem to get great reviews.

I bought a tele style bass pick up from Eternal pick ups in the uk which required no widening of pick up slot , basically a drop in replacement . . And yes there is a quality control factor but they know what's going on. These days you buy those to learn to play on and if it's for you, upgrade all electronics but yeah with all those cheaper bass guitars, a fret job done should be first thing done. Although I just bought an Ibanez Tmb30 short scale and frets were fine. Would of gotten Squier jaguar but was too hard to find used for right price. I spent more money on amp for home practice.
