The Interview kicks my ass. I saw someone point out that one of the reasons Freddie is so contemptuous of Anatoly in this song is his own parental issues make him very disapproving of fathers who abandon their children, which I thought was a brilliant observation.

@@TimeandMonotony I think " Pity the Child" really explains a lot about Freddie. I like how he realizes he needs to grow up. And he puts Chess above everything else even if it means helping some he hates because Chess is his not only passion, it's his life and he doesn't believe it should be political (and he's right).

Ok - the "Chess is her passion" at 4:30 is phenomenal. In fact, the entire 'interview' is great, overflowing with spite yet pitch perfect.

RIP the playlist, no more part 12 :(

My opinion- when it’s Florence’s third song about the dangers of being in love, it’s redundant - but when it’s Svetlana’s, it’s perfect.

The Interview is hands down my favorite part I have listened to it more times than a normal person should

Adam Pascal is so phenomenal! Such a great performance, just love his version of Trumper!

Introducing the Black Queen. Who seems to have decided to run her own chessboard instead of bothering with the Black King since he started messing around with the White Queen.

Holy shit I just figured out why Anatoly immediately panics and runs during The Interview when the footage of his family comes up. Anatoly knows damn well that his entire family is in the USSR, and after his defection, is almost definitely under constant government watch. It would be impossible for an American news network to get their hands on any footage of them... unless the Soviet government gave it to them. For almost everyone, it's a harmless dick move that unsettles Anatoly, and reminds him that he's totally cheating on his wife. For Anatoly, it's the equivalent of Molokov walking up and saying "Did you think that the American's were on your side? Because they're really not. Also, we have your wife and kids and can have them killed at any time, so I'd advise you start co-operating right the fuck now." The footage wasn't just mind games. It was a threat. And a very detailed one too. Really, bringing Svetlana to Bangkok and entering Florence's father into the equation was just overkill at that point.

Okay, I've been listening/watching this production for years and never could figure out why Anatoly (SPOILER) goes back to Russia at the end of the show. I always thought it was because he was a finicky asshole but now... wow. I feel kind of silly for not realizing it sooner. Now that I've read your comment, suddenly I understand EVERYTHING happening in the show. So thank you for bringing that to light!

Well, as a Russian I would say that at that time (in the eighties) his wife and kids would in no way get killed or even imprisoned by the state, although he's still gotten them in a lot of trouble. As a family of a refugee, it woud be hard for them to build a career or get into an university, and maybe they'd be watched by the authorities a little bit more closely than the others, but that's about it. Those were relatively mild times for USSR. Still, I understad why he ran away and it's actually one of my favourite songs in this musical.

And the plot thickens... I have to say the character for whom I feel very sorry is Svetlana! Sure, she's a pawn in a very manipulative scheme, but she (and their children) have been watching her husband's adultery on live television for probably more than a year and she's had to suffer through all of it!

They both nail their characters

It's just amazing how they can sing but somehow also sound exactly how you would imagine someone would sound in that situation in real life.

Kerry Ellis(Svetlana) sang so beautifully.

I love The Soviet Machine! one of the best songs And Leonid's falsetto at the end is just perfect

I knew she only had a small part, but wow I wish Kerry Ellis turned up before Part 11.

The whole interview hurts my vocal chords to even think about singing

I love everything about this, and it is so interesting to hear little bars and lines of ABBA music intertwined in some of these songs. Such pure genius.

I agree! I am not really educated in vocal technique, but I have always loved that part and thought it sounded like really great singing to me.

Part 12 was my favorite section! I come back here every few years :(

I love Svetlana, but Someone Else's Story doesn't work for her. SHE'S ALREADY been left behind; this isn't her choice. Not that I think Florence needs another song, but if the writers misunderstand their character, they should at least give her the Sidney lyrics that actually make sense for her.

In the Swedish performance of Chess in Concert, Someone Else's Story was actually Florence's song. Lyrics made more sense from that point of view.

I think it’s Svetlana’s inner voice debating on whether to go and fight for her marriage or just let Florence have him. She knows he’s having an affair but does she love and want him enough for her and her children to try and go fight to make Anatoly see what he’s throwing away and make sure that’s what he really wants? I think it’s a great emotional choice for her, especially the end when she realizes there really is no “right” answer. Just one way of hurting herself or the other.

That’s what I thought too! In my ideal Chess plot, I would have added more depth to his character, making him a long time friend of Anatoly, who’s deep inside very jealous of his friend’s success as a Chess player. Then, when Anatoly defects from the Soviet Union, Vigaand sees it as an opportunity of realising his dream of becoming world champion. Thus, he ‘betrays’ his old friend and allies with Molokov in order to challenge Anatoly hoping he’ll beat him and become more successful as he had always wished for. But in the end, he’s just another pawn being controlled by the games of politics.

The Soviet Machine and Someone else’s Story are 2 of my favourite songs from the musical, gutted they aren’t in most recordings 😣

And it STILL kinda feels like the plot doesn't make sense in places. I still can't point at a character and say, "That's my protagonist." Don't get me wrong - the music is wonderful and justifies all the attempts. I...just don't know if it can be fixed.
