Thanks for the great overall response to this video. As this is my first real video, I did not expect it to get anywhere near this many views so I probably didn't take it as seriously as I should have (there are a number of dumb inside jokes and whatnot). Nevertheless, looking back months later, it's clear that this video did spark a discussion about cheating in speedrunning and had a lasting impact!

𝐀𝐃𝐃𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐈𝐍𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍:
There are many more instances and methods of cheating that were not discussed in this video. This includes more methods that, if done cleverly, are impossible to detect and could even be done right in front of an audience. For instance, here is another interesting method used in Terraria: • qyr_'s Cheating in Ter... .
I'd also like to point out that just because a run is live streamed does not mean we can disregard cheating. In fact, a lot of the runs featured in this video were live streamed. In the case of splicing, it's as simple as just playing back the prerecorded spliced video on a stream whilst pretending to play live. Multiple people have played back prerecorded runs on stream as if they were live, even with a webcam and microphone. Here is an example of EnNopp112 pulling it off pretty well: • EnNopp's confession (c...
In this case, EnNopp did not play back a prerecorded run to cheat, but just to play a joke on his audience. However, it demonstrates how the same process could be used to convincingly cheat by playing back a prerecorded splice/TAS.
Another point is that tool-assisted runs can be replayed on console with the use of special hardware. Such hardware is not readily available and also a big pain to get working, so I don't think this would be the go-to method for many people, but maybe this could become more common in the future if the process becomes more streamlined and speedrunning becomes more competitive.
You can also hook up your computer to a TV and replay a spliced run on your TV. If you record the TV with a webcam, it would make it appear like the run is being played from console rather than a recording, so the run may seem even more legitimate and the video would be difficult to analyse.
There are methods to get around mains hum inconsistencies. For instance, you could quite easily remove mains hum audio from a run with an equaliser or band-stop filter. You could then edit in your own consistent mains hum sound, potentially making a splice undetectable.
Thanks for reading!

    im an audio producer and engineer. "mains hum" is the ac current from your house not being entirely filtered out by the circuity in whatever hardware is being used. the reason you wont get this problem on more modern game captures is because often times the signals are handled digitally instead of by analog, resulting in no mains hum and lower noise floors. however, the same analysis technique you used for the mains hum should work for digital noise floors, since you'd expect the noise to remain continuous in either case.

    This video inspired me to get into Speedrunning. I've spliced several top-10 records on many prominent games over the last few months. Emulator with noise removal, fake splits, Vegas used. OBS'd livestream to Twitch with alts typing pre-rendered questions at various cues to make it look like I'm answering questions in real time. Totally slipped past the Mods and verifiers. I'll leave the detective work up to you guys. Good luck.

    Good vid. I don't think there are many who would be many in the position with the required mindset to pull this sort of thing off. Some sure, but not many. You'd need to: - be committed enough to become proficient at a run, learning all the strategies. - build some credibility for being legitimate. - be willing to risk the reputation for honesty or skill you have developed. - have enough understanding of the game to know what would indicate cheating to veterans. - have some idea of the amount of scrutiny your run would receive and by who. - care very little for the integrity of speedrunning. - not want the satisfaction of beating other runners legitimately. - not care that later strategy changes could still lose you the world record despite your work. Some games would also be far harder to cheat in than others. I speedrun GTA V for example. It would be hard to cheat in a significant way that wouldn't be either painfully obvious or extremely time consuming to hide over the 6 hour run. World records are of course always watched and looked at for strategy changes despite the run being so long, cheating for a non-significant leaderboard time would be far easier.

    Regarding mains hum (from someone with radio and electronics experience). It's caused by poorly shielded AC and poorly shielded audio or radiofrequency lines. Basically all conductors are surrounded by a magnetic field, caused by moving electrons. This field will pulse at the frequency of your local mains, hence the term mains frequency (also called Utility Frequency, or Powerline Frequency by Americans, it sounds like you're British). Normally power cables are unshielded, so they emit this electromagnetic field around them. Many cheaper audio lines are unshielded as well, though higher end ones have shielding. An unshielded line carrying AC current (and only AC) will induce tiny amounts of voltage in nearby unshielded conductors via a method called Electromagnetic Inductance. Basically a moving and changing electric field will cause a sympathetic current in any nearby conductor. This is the same method used on purpose to make radios, wireless chargers, transformers, RFID tags and other devices that rely on induced voltage. If you have unshielded audio cables near an unshielded mains of some kind, you get hum. Also, some cheaper audio components are not well-shielded internally, and you can get "cross-talk" where one part of the circuit induces voltage into another. This is rare in applications that rectify the power down to low-volt DC (like, say, most home audio equipment) because DC current does not generate a magnetic field that changes, and thus cannot induce voltage. It is a power in high-current applications like large guitar amplifiers, and shielding and clever circuit design are required to avoid unwanted harmonics. HOWEVER some devices even take advantage of these small stray induced currents between parts. This is one reason for the famously "warm" (harmonic-heavy) sound of vacuum-tube audio amplifiers.

    I've noticed over the past 10 years of speedrunning that there's been a dramatic shift toward single-segment RTAs over segmented runs, which used to be the bread and butter of the SDA of old. This is no doubt a result of the popularity of streaming and events like GDQs which are virtually all RTAs. I simply don't hear about WR segmented runs anymore and my impression is that people don't find them that impressive anymore for whatever reason. With respect to cheating, it's hard to figure out the prevalence of cheating in the community, which would be important to deciding what level of measure to take to respond to it. For example, for RTAs to be valid, you must also submit a handcam. Many streamers already have these set up so it's not too troublesome. On the far more draconian end of the spectrum, we might see a shift back toward segmented runs, in which splicing is no longer an issue. Naturally, all measures involve some level of pain and inconvenience, so it wouldn't be worth adopting these practices if the level of cheating was

  • @retro-meister

    @retro-meister

    Yeah, segmented runs are certainly very cool and interesting. However, I think that nowadays quite a lot less emphasis is put on the actual entertainment value of runs and how well-played they are. A lot of the hype and interest is now generated by the competition factor, and you only really get this from the real-time runs.

    In the theater we regularly encounter mains hum (called ground hum in the uk often). It's caused by another device pulling load on the same ring main (power circuit) as the device that has the speaker. (also unshielded cabling running near unshielded audio cabling). In the theater it was often lighting but at home i could imagine it being all sorts of different things. Shielded cabling and high quality power adapters often can negate a lot of this as it could be even be as simple as the tv you are playing on interfering with the speakers you have plugged in. Hope this helps, happy to explain more if you'd like.

  • @Iendyil

    @Iendyil

    The only way i can think of you really eradicating this in a home setup would probably to be using speakers connected to a different ring main than the monitor and incredibly high quality audio cables connecting the data between the two. Many homes here in the UK only have one ring main however so unless you are going to buy a generator just to eradicate all semblance of hum i'd probably say it's unlikely :P

    You'll find mains hum (aka power line hum) even in professional audio gear. From the best old vinyl to the newest digital, it's there. From the start of electronic recording a century ago engineers have fought hum as a bitter enemy. Even when it's below what humans can hear, digital signal processing can usually find some and bring it out. That kind of thing is usually done by police or lawyers trying to discredit audio or video submitted as evidence.

    +MrJimbo1qaz Yes you can - but that might be just a little bit hard if the software you use to connect the splices doesn't allow you to nudge the audio sample by sample. And even if you'd align it nicely, there is still a chance you screwed up and it only looked and sounded nice on the preview and still looks bad on the frequency spectrum. TLDR it's usually tedious.

    FurryWulfz Well a while ago I checked in audacity and if I remember correctly I couldn't see anything on the spectrogram. But yes maybe correct. If the mains hum is so low though, I feel like it would be a lot harder to analyse reliably. Also, it was discussed on the r/speedrun thread that maybe any analysis like mains hum could be thrown off by a non-lossless recording. Furthermore, if you only upload a live-streamed version of your run with commentary on top, it would of course be impossible to analyse mains hum.

    +Joseph Still Well, different setups can play legit SM64 and have no mains hum, I beleive, but I agree that this will be harder to make up as a real speedrun because of that too. Another way to get along with it, by the way, is just to align phase of the hum in both slices - but for this there will be needed software that supports doing something like this - aligning audio sample by sample isn't something easy usually.

    +Axzenz :D With this method, it still will be possible to notice something weird no matter what you do - if the game plays 50Hz tone during the splice, it will be muted along with the game. And if you'd use a setup that plays legit SM64 and has no mains hum, then you'd have to make that setup to play SM64 as close to Nintendo 64 as possible, because if you have pixel-perfect emulator graphics and mains hum, for example, it will look weird.

    I thought this was going to be a video about glitches and shortcuts, and you were calling speedrunners cheaters. lol~ Instead, I found a thoughtful video on the jerks that ruin for all of us, and spoil by genuine cheating. There was such a person in the ALTTP community, caught cheating, which really sucks... cause he was an awesome guy. :( Idk... worst part was defending someone that cheated, then validation proved they were, and a lot of us looked stupid for sticking up for him. lol~ Great video, dude.

    Wouldn't the easiest method to cheat on a speedrun be to record your inputs and splice them together instead and then just play the game out with the recorded inputs? You could even livestream it and just sit there at the computer... Most speedrunners i've seen don't show their hands. Seems like the only way to really verify a run is at a real life event with a verified setup.

    BradtheRung Lol. You are thinking far too much into this. I produced the rest of the video before the introduction segment and decided that I wanted to add that intro just to start set an exciting tone to the video. Nothing that I said in the video is false or in any way misleading . I chose to elaborate on the cases which I thought would demonstrate the point best and show a wide variety of different methods and circumstances. Anyone who wants to know more about the Goose or Werster incidents can do their own research and I've made all of the information clear multiple times in this comments section and on reddit. Not sure what the problem is.

    You were deliberately misleading by putting that in. And rather than apologize for misleading, you flat out lie by saying you weren't being misleading. In the same way you can't trust a speed run from a cheater once they cheat, there is no reason to watch anything from you. I can't trust you, and will now block you.

    This is VERY interesting, and very well made but I have a question, WTF is the purpose of speed-running and what do you win besides bragging rights/pride? As in why go to these insane lengths to cheat (and to find the cheaters) when there is no inherent value in whats being done. Im not hating, just curious (Im relatively new to speed-running culture)

  • @retro-meister

    @retro-meister

    7 жыл бұрын

    I mentioned one possible motivation at the end of the video. Cheating can help generate hype around your runs and your stream. Some people will try and use this to grow their stream. Bragging rights/pride is also a big deal. People receive glory and praise from their runs as well as respect within the community. I'm sure this is enough to motivate some people. Another thing is that many speedrunners set goal times for themselves which are tedious and require a lot of grinding. At some point, a runner might become too fed up and frustrated with the game (to the point that it is not fun to play anymore). Rather than just quit without achieving their goal time, some runners would rather cheat in order to be satisfied.

    Seems like a good method. Some of the TAS stuff may for example extend the controller port, but it will result in something not working, that is possible to notice before uploading such TAS run as speedrun. Perfect TAS (frame-perfect etc.) still probably could be reverse-engineered to discover clues that someone cheated, but you don't need frame perfect TAS to have good speedrun.

    Speed running really is a Art. But the technological aspects of speed running, the way that electricty flows from the Eather up in the Atmosphere just to reverberate into digital signals in your wires - all that stuff really is only possible on a flat and motionless Earth. The rainbow is caused by the dome structure enclosing the flat earth, called the "firmament". The Bible goes into great detail about how it was created but we've also found fragments that has been broken off from the dome when nukes have been blasted into it during "operation fishbowl" launched under "operation dominic" after admiral Richard E. Byrd's expedition to Antarctica "operation deepfreeze" where he discovered the enclosure.
