    What I've been doing as an artist on a budget is I've bought cheaper markers (illo sketch markers) and as one runs out I replace it with a similar color in the copic brand. That way I don't have to buy a bunch of copics at once and I can also see which markers I use most frequently. Turns out I'm a big can of the cream color.

    OOOH! AN IDEA FOR A TEST NO ONE SEEMS TO EVER DO: I find, especially with Michaels' brand, Artist's Loft, starts to fray when you use it for a little bit of time. I was hoping you could do a longevity test. I know it makes making a video about them difficult as you want to get it up asap! However, I feel like it would really help. I also have been finding that if I layer them too much, it makes a sticky, and kind of gross residue, and instead of darkening where it was layered, it starts to just push the gunky mess around. So in short (tl;dr) can you colour over the same spot and see if a residue starts to form, as well as a sort of ware test? I feel like it may accomplish the same thing, lol.

    paranoiaprincess I do actually have a bit of (a singular) experience of testing the effect passage of time has on markers, and I can't be sure because I only tested two brands and a single colour, but there are differences that, over time, get more noticeable as the colours fade. Jazza didn't swatch the cheap markers at all (which is something I don't know how a living creature could do and then sleep at night), but even people who do swatch colours don't often take lightfastness (or the lack of it) into account. If you need the physical copy of your artwork to last, I suggest swatching and testing your markers beforehand to see what effect you get (some colours lose their saturation, intensity, the hue, or all three)

  • @harpoonlobotomy

    @harpoonlobotomy

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@EKimatH Lightfastness is seriously overlooked in comparison tests, for some really cheap products' colours the fading can be incredibly fast. But for practice, they're useful just because you get a lot of art made/practiced without having to worry about the cost.

  • @karuno9721

    @karuno9721

    HarpoonLobotomy alcohol markers aren’t supposed to be lightfast so thats why its never a real factor in comparing markers, because both of them will eventually fade. Because well its just dye and not pigment.

They are cheaper than copics (around 3€ individually for Promarker, a bit more for Brushmarker) and, in my opinion, better than copics. If you live in the US though i heard the price is similar to Copics over there.

    I'm just imagining a montage of Jazza accidentally cutting markers in half, each time becoming more and more ridiculous. Trips over while holding a utility knife, accidentally cuts a marker in half. Slams a door shut just as a marker falls off the table into the door's path, marker breaks in half. Yells so loud a glass shatters, sending glass flying into a display of markers, cutting one in half. Does a really big yawn, and for some completely unexplained reason a marker gets cut in half by it.

    I have touchnew markers, they’re pretty cool. I do have a hard time blending sometimes due to not having a brush tip, but it doesn’t bother me too much. I feel like the outcome of it is nice and neat, you get pigmentation. The only problem is similar to what Jazza encountered, which was the caps not being the same color as the actual marker. Because of that, I always have my trusty color legend that I have created when I got the markers, so I can bear it pretty easily. Maybe when I grow up a little more, I might buy myself some real copics.

    I think you're right about the Copic brush nib being a large part of what drives the price up so much. I started out with a much cheaper brush marker and those brush nibs, while looking like they were constructed in the same way, fell into pieces after a while. While the only thing that have ever harmed any of my Copic brush nibs has been when I've tried to use them when they're too dry, as in the ink was so low that the chisel nib end was completely white.

They're really fantastic, and I say that as someone who's used their 120 set alongside their skin tone set. Really with that they're 152 colors because 4 markers double but they're fantastic. I got the 120 set during a Black Friday for 71.99, so around .59 a marker but the normal price is around $120. Nonetheless, Arteza is always wonderful about having deals or taking advantage of their rewards program. I really hope you're able to enjoy them in the future!
