    Yeah, different times for sure. Definitely not perfect, but objectively I’d say much better than today. I just wish we knew back then what was coming down the pike (well, some of us actually did, but…) so we could make the necessary changes to avoid it. I mainly just miss the musical climate. And, not gonna lie… the drugs 🤪😆

    It was a different world then. I remember seeing Cheap Trick back in their heyday and a lot of other bands in the 80’s, but I’ll say it: Cheap Trick were the best band I’ve ever seen live.

    Cheap Trick, and Van Halen in the early days. Absolutely, hands down those were the two best big rock concerts I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen some smaller venue gigs with bands that were more of an underground phenomenon that were even better, but Cheap Trick and (first 4 albums era) VH were definitely, above and beyond, the best of the bunch as far as arena gigs I’ve seen (I’ve seen more than a few) go. Honorable mention to J. Geils Band. They were almost as good.

    I’ve just gotta say… this is one that I always keep coming back to. I saved it to my favorites long ago, and it just never gets old. The best part is the way it’s been cleaned up. For many years the only way I could see this footage was on some crappy 10th generation bootleg VHS tape with horrendous audio and visual quality. So, cheers Tardis for doing what you do. You provide a highly commendable service, and I for one am grateful.

    For the first couple of years after Bun left, it was a hard sell for me. They *almost* lost me completely, and I’m pretty much what most people would consider a ‘super fan’. I’ve stuck by them through thick and thin (a lot of thin in the 80’s) ever since I first heard the song “ELO Kiddies”, some 45 years ago. I just couldn’t wrap my head around a Cheap Trick without Bun E Carlos. I don’t care how good a replacement anyone is, you just can’t fill those shoes. It took actually going to see them live with Daxx. Though nowhere near as good as his predecessor, he knew all those songs 100%, and did them justice. Still, I really miss Bun E.

  • @Shikta-poobah67

    @Shikta-poobah67

    3 күн бұрын

    @@karengarrison3666 There are two different stories I’ve heard and read about, regarding his departure. One is the official story, which is that his back problems had gotten so bad that he could no longer play with the same level of power and stamina that he had previously. The long tours and the longer sets they were playing during their Vegas stint were taking a major physical toll on him. The other story goes that he and Robin had a major falling out during their “Sgt. Pepper” residency in Las Vegas, where things got really heated and it almost came to blows one night, at which point Bun either quit or was fired, depending on who you ask. I don’t know which of those two stories is the true story. Maybe they both are? Sounds to me like Bun was getting burnt out and was in constant physical pain, which I know from experience can cause a person to have a really short temper. Then again I wasn’t there, so who really knows? All I know is that Bun is still officially considered a member of CT, but he no longer plays drums for them. Don’t ask me how that works, I have no idea.

    @@DaveAnchovies There's a "too unpolished" version. The first US CD had a bad mix on Ain't That a Shame. During the final go round with each band member doing mini-solos, Robin Zander's guitar solos sound like a chicken being strangled. Just awful playing. Makes me think that the version on all other releases has Rick looping Robin's solos during that part.

    Check out Don kirshner's Rock concert. Just that footage alone made me declare Cheap Trick the best American band of all time. Robin Zander is a genius. Rick Nielsen is a genius. Bun e Carlos is a genius. Tom Peterson what were you thinking leaving the band?

  • @Shikta-poobah67

    @Shikta-poobah67

    Жыл бұрын

    @@maxxschneider5534 Yeah that Don Kirshner footage is white-hot fire. I saw it back when it aired and it blew my little 11 year old mind. I watch it today all these years later and it still has the same effect on me. They were young, hungry, and unstoppable. Probably the best live footage of them I’ve ever seen, though this one here ain’t too shabby either. [EDIT] As far as Tom leaving when he did, I kind of understand why he chose to do so. It was a very grueling, exhausting period for them. They had been touring, recording, and doing TV promo spots nonstop for about 3 years straight without a single break, and then when they went into the studio to record “All Shook Up”, Tom knew they were going in the wrong stylistic direction, and he was right. That album was the beginning of a downward spiral that lasted for 18 years. I’ve met Tom. He’s a very quiet, laid back, reserved person. All the insanity that was happening daily around that turn of the decade period just got to be a bit too much for a guy like him.

I wish people would just say that instead of constantly throwing around “underrated”. I mean ffs they’re in the R&RHoF, they’ve sold over 20 million albums, and they still to this day sell out large arenas worldwide. Hardly what I’d call “underrated”.

    Back in the early 70's, I was a kid in the Dells, probably about 5 or 6 years old. Robin Zander performed/worked(?) at a place called Tower Pub with a guy named Brian Beebe who were known as Zander and Kent. My mom and my aunt were cocktail waitress and bartender there. My dad, my sister and I used to take a walk a couple blocks to get there during the summer and pick up my mom and sometimes my aunt just before their shift was done. Those were the days when they used to throw peanut shells all over the floor to soak up the beer and that place always had peanut shells all over the place as I remember. Some of those times, some dude with long blonde hair would give my sister and I kiddie cocktails and my dad a beer and get some small talk as an adult would back in those days. Fast forward to 1979 I bought the Dream Police album with my allowance. When I got home (shopped in Portage at Value Village) my mom saw the album and told me that she used to work with Robin. She then said, He was a nice guy.... you don't remember him? He used to give you and your sister those damn kiddie cocktails and you kids would have a sugar rush and we would have to chase you around the Dells on our way to the car. Last I heard, Brian (Kent) still performs in the Dells area at different locations and Robin comes around once every year or two and they perform together at places like Monks for a little bit of reminiscing I imagine.

    I was at this concert in 1981. I went with my best friend, Frank (R.I.P.). We got there early, stood there for hours and were some of the first to run through when they finally let us go, and we were in the front row right in front of Rick. Frank is the guy with the mustache and baseball cap right in the center of the screen at 0:37. I was right next to the couple that you see at 11:29. If the camera had panned one person to the right, you would see me. I wonder whatever happened to that couple. Dang, those kids are 60 now. This concert was broadcast on Channel 11 in Chicago a year or so after the concert, and I taped it but then accidentally recorded over part of it. So it's nice to see the concert again.

    Yeah, the double-kick drums were a short lived thing, fortunately. I saw them around this time, when Pete Comita was the bassist, and I remember the double-kick and thinking “Oh no, they’re going full heavy metal”, but then the next time I saw them (1983), it was back to a single kick. I think for a brief moment in the early 80’s they were toying with the idea of being a metal band. It kind of shows a bit on “One On One”. The production on that album is like some weird hybrid of heavy metal and new wave. I wasn’t much of a fan.

    That’s part of why I’ve always loved ‘em so much. They could never really be pigeonholed as any one thing. Were they hard rock? Were they power pop? Were they new wave? Were they glam rock? The truth is they were *ALL* of those things, and then some. They were always able to break down barriers. Almost every time I’ve seen them live, the crowd is a total mixed bag of people who you would normally never see under one roof together. Punks, metalheads, old rockers, young kids, old farts, you name it…. CT are a band for the people.
