Learn how to play Cheap Sunglasses as performed by ZZ Top. A great blues rock tune from their Duguello album. Billy makes use of great interplay with his rhythm guitar parts and tasteful leads that both seem to dance with one another. A great example of how to leave plenty of space in one's playing.
In this lesson I cover the rhythm guitar parts, the guitar solos, and the great groove part during the song outro section.
Vaughn Skow did the PA Amp conversion that I used. He makes great pickups and gear, checkout his store at www.vaughnskow.com/ and on YT at / @vaughnskow

Yes!!! More ZZ Top! After years & years of inaccurate tabs, this will clear the air of how it's played. Thank you!

If there is anything that I've learned about Billy over the years - it is that he like to be economical in his playing. He likes to stay in one region of the fretboard. This great lesson proves it! Thanks!!

Great job as usual! Please figure out how to do the complete outro and show us because that technique is so important to make this a complete jam. It’s just a bada- - part. When that song starts, I can hardly wait for that part. You are very helpful with these lessons. Thank you!

Thank you (not the other Zz top song) but for playing cheap Sunglasses right and not butchering the hell out of it like every other person I've seen playing the song. Once you learn how to play it correctly, it's totally frustrating to see somebody not hybrid pick the d and the g string while they're playing the 6th and the 5th string and not tune the high e down to D. In fact, it's infuriating not because they're bad people As everybody plays it that way originally, but because 20 years ago I sat do we n with the CD and spent a month goofing around with it and then I saw Billy gibbons play it live so I had this revelation and figured out what the hell was going on. I first figured out that he was hybrid picking the main riff from the f to the G to the B flat to the C. But when I saw that he was playing the intro slide on the first three strings up in the second and third fret position it dawned on me that she dropped to D. if you don't play it that way and use great muting and dampen the strings the minute each portion of the riff is complete you're not going to be playing in the pocket the way Billy gibbons plays it secondly when he goes into the solo and he's playing the C minor 7th to the b-flat major and then the D Minor 7th to the D major, he's using hybrid picking for the chords that underlie the solo if you don't play that portion with the right groove and you can do it with the pic as well but you just have to be very disciplined and really damp in those strings and use a lot of strokes, if you play that part correctly, the solos so easy and sound so cool the key is to obviously have the right equipment as far as a guitar with humbucking pickups and to have a great amp with the right amount of saturation and power tube distortion. Anything that is based off that Fender Tweed bassmsn circuit like a high-powered Tweed twin or a marshall plexi or even a good matchless or a bad cat etcetera, the power tubes have to be loud enough and warmed up enough you can get those great pinch harmonics and you also have to play on the right portion of the string so that you're playing what would effectively be 12 frets above the pinch harmonic note to really get that note to squeal and get the harmonic content. It's a kind of song that once you learn it and practice it for a few hours everything will make sense and you will be able to play it live and sound authentic I'm not suggesting it's easy to sing and play perfectly in the pocket like that, because gibbons was so underrated when it comes to being a great rhythm lead and singing blues player lots of people assume his stuff it's so simple but that's because they are not playing it correctly when you are using the hybrid picking and playing it up to speed with the notes properly dampened while singing and doing that in a three-piece band with great syncopated rhythm section with the bass and the drums having a perfect symbiotic relationship with the guitar and vocals , you end up with the untouchable Blues i Rock power trio that is ZZ top. Everything they did from Zz top, Rio Grande Mud, Tres Hombres, Fandango and Deguello is their best shit by far. The 80s were ok but it was extremely commercial and over produced. Still great but I like the heavy Texas blues like blue jean blues, fool for your stockings, waiting for the bus which is more of a boogie into Jesus Just Left Chicago which is a great kind of gospel Blues, and their boogies like La Grange, Rush, Just Got Paid, their interpretation of Sam & Dave with the soul on I thank you, the boss cheats sunglasses, The Rock and Roll Lucy shuffle of I'm bad I'm Nationwide. I believe that 71 through 79 was the band at their best as far as recordings.better than their straight ahead rock. like Sharp dressed Man in the legs I did like give me all your love and I thought that was a pretty ballsy blues rock sort of boogie with a little 80s twist. I just think it's a shame that unless you're in your 60s or 70s or you are a blues guitar and blues rock guitar fan also you've heard all the cool ZZ top shag carpeting guitars, silly videos and songs like Sharp dressed Man song still as a cool riff but who gives a s*** they can do better than that

Super cool lesson, thanks. One to consider would be “Hear me calling” by Ten Years After, although I personally like the energy of Slade cover on their live album, Alvin Lee does some great blues on the original. Keep up the good work, you have a really good teaching style and you really pay attention to the details. Cheers

Gotta say, You're the absolute best @ figuring out songs and showing how to play them. However on this song, although you have all the notes exactly correct, It's my contention that Billy did this in open G.
