Learn how to play Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers as performed by ZZ Top (specifically the guitar played by Billy Gibbons).
The energy in this song is incredible, the sound that Billy gets on his lead tone sounds like the tubes are literally cooking and he is maxing out whatever amp he was using paired with his Les Paul. And did you catch
the "early days fingerboard tapping" technique here? I know Eddie Van Halen must have, right?

Thank god someone did a competent lesson on this. Thanks man!
100% my favorite ZZ Top song. Thank you so much for this!
Down here in southwest coastal Florida drinking AndyGator beer and learnin' some ZZ licks -- thank you sir.
Sir you totally nailed this. This is so on the money thank you very much. First Billy gibbons lesson that actually sounds like Billy gibbons. You picked up so well on the nuances of Billy gibbons, that's the secret to his tone and vibe. Cheers
Billy G had his fingers layed down across fret board a lot always allowing muted strings everywhere. Which attributed to his iconic style layed back chill left hand. Tells ya. Relax 😂
Love that LP. Great Lesson Great Song. Keep'em Coming!!
Always wondered about some of those phrases, outstanding job!
Thanks so much! You make this simple ( the rhythm, anyway ) for me to play, even with my handicap! What a blast it is….. to play it correctly!
Great to see more Billy - thanks :)
Keep up the great lessons man. 🎉❤
Another great one. Thanks!
I've played along with this song hundreds of times wrongly . Thanks for showing the correct way to play it . Billy Gibbons is a guitar Great , that's for sure .

great job
Great job on this! Love that Les Paul, and I've been thinking about getting that Tone Master Deluxe Reverb, sounds killer.
Nice guitar 🎸🤘
Thank you for clarification of the songs.
Thank You
Hey! great lesson. I like the way you deliver it, good format. I used to play this in the 70's and 16 year old me couldn't do the tapping thing very well. EVH probably had no issue which is why i went back to school. I did see an interview with Eddie where he said the first tapping thing he learned was LZ Heartbreaker. And pinch harmonics was Leslie West. Billy did both and I'm sure Eddie knew it.
Yes!
Awesome video! I would love to see a tutorial for Dear Angie by Badfinger!
Thanks, I will be hitting you up sooner than later!
Got Xmas lights already🎉
Excellent Lesson, Thumbs 🆙. I got question on the picking is it all down strokes on each note and chord to?
@12footchain
Жыл бұрын
Good question, I'm assuming you mean on the chords? Difficult to explain, I should have devoted some time to it. I play it with [a] the first 3 hits on the chord are downstrokes (last one emphasized), followed by [b] quick alternating muted triplet (down up down), followed by an emphasized downstroke. The pattern then repeats from [b] two more times to complete the strum pattern. Hope that made sense, difficult to describe here
I’ll drink to that!!
I usually use C9 and D9 chords but play a Gm7 for the first chord.
These lessons are gold, thanks man.
Billy Gibbons uses some really interesting licks like on Chevolet so anything from older ZZ Top interests me .There is a shortened live version on tube here .I think it's new years eve and he says welcome to Washington DC ? those chords and leads are or seem really unique .

Charles, ZZ Top played with Alvin Lee & Ten Years After at Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia, Maryland (suburban Washington/Baltimore) in the winter of '73/74. That may be the show you're talking about. Alvin Lee was great but ZZ Top stole the show. They were just breaking on alternative radio at the time.
I find it interesting The Reverend Billy Gibbons plays on 7, 9, 11, 20, 30, 38 strings. I usually play on 9's. Top Shelf again 12ft ♪♫♪♫♪

Very good! And what attentuator setting do you have the Fender set at? Not the full 22 watts, I take it...

I pulled all the way down to the 1/2 watt on that
It was a 62/63 delux fender amp.

Waz up chains. 🎉
Live in 1980, in Germany they play this and many other great zz top songs, although the thing is you can tell they are in E flat or d standard. The riffs are played differently than all the covers I see online and their tone is a lot heavier than the record. I'm thinking the standard tuning versions of most of their tunes don't sound right because they acctually play a half step down . Very confusing stuff for a guitar player lol
What I understand about this era Gibbons is he used a brownface deluxe.
I bet they wrote that song about Samuel Bvld in Dallas (I prefer the Van halen version),
Great lesson!!!
always learn the live version
Are most top songs in g?

Not bad man, but the opening lick to the solo doesn't sound right. I been all over youtube trying to find somone play it like the record and so far no good.

I did a video last year demonstrating that lick in a way that sounds indentical to the record. Check it out!

Shed Guy, Billy never really played it exactly the same way twice. The important thing is the feeling when trying to sound like him, not attempting to hit everything note-for-note. If you do, you're losing the freedom of expression and urgency. Playing the blues is about how you feel right now. You have a framework, you build improvisationally within it but it's ok to f--k up or wander off the path a little. If you land wrong, the right note is always one fret away and how you get there is your sound and style for blues, boogie, rockabilly, etc. He just rolls with it and lets the guitar do some of the work for him. If you've seen ZZ Top live a few times, you've heard Billy kinda suck one night and then do stuff from another world on another. It's all good because it's real.

@@markpell8979 I dont disagree at all, but if one is making the claim to teach it "like the record" then one should be able at least play it like the record. Seems like false advertising to me. Beside, as I try to learn to play i want to know how these sounds were made so i can do it too. I can already wank around but thats not enough for me.

@@someshedguy399 I hear you man. He did capture some of Billy's tricks ok. But like you probably, I would've liked a little more structure and rehearsal behind the lesson.
Great teacher here !!!
