Cheap PlayStation 2 HDMI solution with comparison | PS2 TO HDMI vs. AV2HDMI

Ойындар

It's always hard to hook up an old game console to a modern TV. This is especially true with older 3D game consoles such as the PS2. Over the years there have been many mods that most of the time provide HDMI. These are expensive and often require the user to solder them in themselves.
The only remaining option remaining then (besides emulation ofc.) is to use the existing AV out port. This often leads to products such as these AV2HDMI boxes one can plug the AV cables into and the result is ok, however a while ago I got my hands on a so called "PS2 TO HDMI". It might not be the best, but for the cheap price it delivers above expectations. Watch this comparison to see a common AV2HDMI box compared to the PS2 TO HDMI dongle!

Great video! For the av2hdmi the digital output for audio should've been mentioned as it would rectify the issue of audio delay.

Could you elaborate upon this? My AV2HDMI only has the composite connection. Or do you mean something else?

@@dyXurChannel You can connect the TOSLINK output or the red and white RCA connectors directly to your receiver or speakers/headphones, bypassing the AV2HDMI's audio entirely. Also note that there are a lot of different versions of the AV2HDMI, but there's now way to know which one you've got without opening it.

@@nastysdsi This would work if the audio was delayed, but the problem was the video sadly. But yeah, there are way to many of these AV2HDMI boxes. I used to have one before this one until I lost it. That one was even worse. There might be one out there that stands above the rest, but even then it is still simple composite.

The PS2toHDMI uses the component output of the PS2, it's the best the PS2 can look on a regular modern TV, if you use GSM you can force progressive scan for a cleaner image on many games, AVtoHDMI is mostly useless if your tv has composite ports just use that.

2:44 The mClassic can only upscale progressive sources. I.e. 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080p. Only a handful of PS2 games supported 480p resolutions, with most being interlaced. The mClassic simply passes through 480i and 576i signals without any upscaling or image processing.

The AV2HDMi does output either 720p or 1080p, but I'm not sure about the PS2TOHDMI. Perhaps it just passes the 576i signal to HDMI. Your comment would then explain the lack of effect it had.

@@dyXurChannel The PS2 to HDMI is literally just an analog to digital converter. For the mClassic to have any effect, you'll either need a 480p compatible game or use a Free McBoot memory card with GSM to force the resolution to 480p or higher.

@@WhiteJarrah The PS2 to HDMI is just an adapter that uses the component output of the PS2, The AV2 to HDMI is the same composite output but just in HDMI form, that's why it works with PS2, Also there's plenty of PS2 progressive games, less in the EU, and with GSM you can force many games to output a progressive image.

AV to HDMI is blurry . I think it is same as if you plugged the composite cable directly to the tv . But what is the difference between PS2 to HDMI and with Mclassic ? I can’t see the difference!

TBH the MClassic had almost no effect and KZreads compression doesn't help. I mostly tested with it to see if I can get some improvements, but I guess if the res isn't at least 720 or higher it won't do much.

Kinda... For consoles like the SNES the OSSC will look just like an emulator, but once you enter 3D graphics it gets a little tricky. It will look like you emulate a PS2 game at native resolution and then upscale it. The problem there is that early 3D consoles were very weak and used low resolution graphics that were upscaled with some filter applied to look good on CRTs. So it can look very blurry and jagged. Modern PS2 (and other consoles) emulators can however provide the extra power to render everything at much higher resolutions and even properly upscale textures (or provide HD Texture packs in some cases). So all in all it depends on what kind of PS2 emulation you expect. The one most people use these days, or one accurate to the original video output the PS2 would've provided.
