Nice video. What I got from this was that while there are better options, ps2 to hdmi sure is very good bang for buck and a great option if you're on a budget. I don't really see myself playing that much on my old ps2 anymore (I use emulators mostly these days), so that's what I got to play around and have some fun. Mostly I want to see Gran Turismo 4 in 1080i for once hehe :D

Decent componate cable then. and a ntsc console or modded one

I found the PS2 TO HDMI adaptor fantastic to use on a PS3 if like me you have a damaged HDMI port, plug one of these in the multi AV and set to component 1080p and bingo!... back in action through HDMI. Trying to get a new replacement hdmi port for a fat ps3 isnt easy soldering one in is tricky so this little adaptor has been a perfect fix for me.

@@rightspritegaming yep id much rather use hdmi over component but tbh theres not much in it for me. I picked up the PS3 for £7 and apart from the broken HDMI port its all gravy, so cant complain :)

I just got it delivered today and my ps2 slim it’s on it’s way can’t wait to see what this bad boy is made of.

Hey man, my levelhike came today. Really pleased with it. The image, to me is fantastic. Very smooth and clean. The tv I'm using is still too big for it really, but I'll get a smaller tv or a monitor down the line. Nevertheless, thank you, thank you. Really enjoying my ps2 and collecting for it and this has just made me appreciate it more.

Your video is informative. Thank you soooo much. Truly appreciate it! I am looking to play my PS2 and WII on an Oled TV and came across your video. Years ago I connected the PS2 to my 1080p TV using component cables but the results were horrible cause of the lack in anti-aliasing. Now am looking for one again, hopefully under 50 euros. One thing still surprises me is that my original Xbox looks really good with the composite cables on my 1080p TV.

@@rightspritegaming I’m having the same problem. My 4K TV loses signal after the PS1 logo screen. From a bit of Googling it seems that it doesn’t support 240p. Which is the best to resolve this please? And what settings would I need to use?

I just got a Level Hike adapter, using a 4K monitor, hooked it up, powered it via the PS2 USB port, changed the video settings to RGB. But, there are some moving, horizontal static lines that pass over the video consistently. I tried a basic PS2 to HDMI adapter that outputs 480 and that works fine. I know the monitor isn't the issue as I've used 720 resolution on other consoles like PS3.

Don't really have the equipment to really find out that bit through experience there was nothing that stood out at all

I`ve got an adapter that looks and acts just like the one from Kaico (It`s branded as Bitfunx). On my experience with my PS2, it works great, and it doesn`t show any simulated bars on the sides of the screen

@@jaymonster81 any component cable will output better picture quality than levelhike, or any RGB adapter. Levelhike can only do 480i. Component cables can do 480p, progressive scan, etc. My 4K Tv doesn't have component outputs, thus why I'm here:(

Keep it simple and affordable with the level hike

I bought a linkfor ps2 hdmi adapter. It was awful mate. It was too sharp, and any time a game went from loading screens, it went to a blue screen. It was really jarring. I returned it and just stuck composite cables straight into my hdtv. Looked so much smoother. But I just want something easy and that will make my games look slightly nicer. The levekhike has peaked my curiousty, thanks.

Yes a HDmi adaptor will work great and games supported with a progressive image will work better but the video out on the console has the worst out put on that generation on console unfortunately,

Your monitor may be using an RGB connection, that’s most common. If your ps2 isn’t set to RGB too, it will be pitch balck

Does the Levelhike show any small black/gray border arround the mane picture? or does it fill the game picture top to bottom on the TV with those black borders

The borders will be present regardless what cable, because I'd how the ps2 natively out puts it out that way, the 16:9 ration switch dies help quite a bit though when going widescreen

@@rightspritegaming I have understood that Levelhike actually uses composite video, which is the lowest quality signal and therefore not recommended. It cannot do 480p just 480i. The difference is huge tho. Think about it this way, using Levelhike is just like using the PS2 composite cable, which is inferior to the component cable.

@@medalgearsalad1419 when you personal test a level hike cable after using a a compatible HD sceen with composite, you will see a nice step up in picture much like what you see in the video . The cable does not tap into to the component signal as it would then not be compatible with the ps1. And only a hand of titles are compatible with 480p any way, unless you head down the modding side of things.

What's the picture quality like if your tv has component cable input and you just plug the component cable directly into it? Better than AV? But less than HDMI?

Depends on the quality of built woth the cable aswell, your getting a 480i output, if its a smaller tv it works fine, but hdmi handles the darker areas slightly better

nice video man i got a porta component too hdmi it sucks on my ps2 the quality sucks on my 1440p monitor oh lord i want too record on official hardware for lets plays . i got one for 42$ the dvd could not read games just look for a broken for parts but working consoles could not read games but i might just use pcsx2 instead my quality looks like shit i am using a 3rd party component cable 3 in 1 i need offical ps2 but those are hard over priced at 60$ for component cables

Just bought the levelhike recently and honestly the I think the picture is worse than my other ps2 to hdmi adapter (made by kaico) Maybe the levelhike cable i got is defective because it does not look as clean as your showing in this video imo

So.... The level like with the M classic will give it the best up scaling without spending an actual ball of money?

I got the level hike and managed to get it working which was a huge improvement on RGB composite but then I recently got an M Classic but im getting the same distored image you had when you put the mclassic in to the cheapo ps2 hdmi adapter. I was wondering if you could help me understand if the mclassic is fautly or if i need to go another route. I just want to play ps2 on my tv and the level hike on its own is ok but there are a lot of jagged edges

@@bfitz111 the mclassic works best with a progressive 480p video output the PS2 and has a over 90% computability native 480i output , some USA titles can get a few more with 480p , the level hike hdmi adapter only works in RGB 480i so that the cable can also work with the ps1 games on the PS2 aswell .unfortunately the PS2 is not the best console to work with the m classic because of its native video output, with some modding and a different cable set you can get slightly better results.

Its just i have the same unplayable distortions with those two combined and with the level hike on its own i have image but its got rough jagged edges kinda fuzzy like

Yes the game is designed by 4:3 but this a 16:9 patched game and the ps2 out pit does nativly crop the image due to its video out put

The "PS2 to HDMI" (on Amazon Germany branded as "Mcbazel PS2 to HDMI Converter") one is the best and cheapest solution imo. It outputs a signal that is comparable to a real proper RGB cable that you attach to your CRT, and those that ever used one of those know that's the best and clearest picture you can get on a CRT, too. You will notice a slight flicker though (interlace bob), however that is also present on a CRT with a real RGB cable. On top of that the "PS2 to HDMI" can output both 50Hz and 60Hz, as long as your monitor/TV can support 50Hz too you will get a smooth and not stuttery output. If your monitor can only output 60Hz, a 50Hz game will appear stuttery overall. (i.e. my old "2007" 1080p Monitor can do 50Hz no problem while using the 640p/i or 575i resolution, but my current 1440p 75Hz monitor only defaults to 60Hz but not lower while staying on 1440p) And the biggest plus are the accurate colours compared to other cheap solutions! The games look just as vibrant and colourful as it does on a CRT! One downside is: You cannot play 240p games aka PS1 with it but there is a workaround: If you play them on your PS2 and use "Free McBoot" you can enter the menu "GSM" and then press "X" to choose "640p 60Hz" or "576p 50Hz" for PS1 games (this also allows playing PAL games in 60Hz mode), you might want to adjust the X- and Y-axis though, on PAL games I've found +4 Y-Axist and -96 X-Axis to work well. Not everything will work perfectly (i.e. Star Ocean 2 intro FMVs and Main Menu) but other than small hiccups, this also lets you enjoy PS1 games with an amazing output quality on an HDMI monitor. --- Then I also have the "Kaico HDMI Adapter for Sony Playstation 1 & 2". Upside: Works natively on PS1 consoles as well as PS2 consoles with PS1 and PS2 games. You also get the choice to swap between "RGB" and "YPbPr". It also supports the most input resolutions of all models: 240p, 288p, 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i. Downside: Horrendously expensive, about $40€. Output is ALWAYS 1080p 60Hz! Meaning 50Hz games that do not have a 60Hz selector ingame will always STUTTER visually. Colours are also washed out and have a pale/grey-ish tone to them. And because the output is 1080p, the entire picture will look blurred overall. The USB Charger slot can easily break. It is too deep in for the cable, which can cause the small slim stick to be pushed down and then break. Be very careful when you insert the USB cable, as the adapter it not servicable at all. It is an alright allrounder, especially if you want to play PS1 games but do not own a PS2 with Free McBoot. But if you do, skip this one and get the "PS2 to HDMI" one. --- Then there is also the "HDMI Adapter for P1/P2" (again branded "Mcbazel" on Amazon Germany) as it says on the package but on the adapter itself it says "HDMI ADAPTER FOR PS1/PS2". Upside: Cheap and works with PS1 and PS2. Has a 4/3 and 16/9 button. Has a swap between 720p and 640p output button. (640p will look slightly better) Downside: 60Hz output ONLY. 50Hz games will look stuttery. Video quality is horrendously bad. Like using the lowest quality cables to connect your real PS2 to an old CRT, but even there it would look nicer than this solution. Colours are washed out and dark. Absolutely skip this one.

I opted for the OSSC after messing about with such cables for a while and never really finding any of them satisfactory - having said that, I play retro games a lot so it makes sense for me to invest that money, if however like many people, you are just dabbling in a bit of retro nostalgia I wouldn't recommend such an investment.

99% of the PS2 library play at 480i. The best option for lag-free gaming on modern displays for the PS2 is the OSSC, or the cheaper Retrotink 2x Multiformat. None of these converters you have shown other than the OSSC handle 480i correctly.

Good comment would like to get my hands on a retro tink, one day, as mentioned through the video this is looking at budget simple plug and play, quite popular adapters out there, the ossc is great but does require a few additional steps and certain setuping up requirements, ossc I reviewed did managed to flat out brake on me but only as i was caputing a lot of content. unfortunately.

Is funny how many videos online regarding video adapters to play PS2 on an LED 16:9 screen when in fact those retro machines were not meant for those displays at all. CRT TV and monitor wins all the time against this other alternatives

The PS2 does have the worst video output to manipulate to a digital signal , when comparing it to the rest of the consoles in that generation. There are some titles that can use a progressive signal which will come across better on a HDTV, and people out there do like a setup to utilise just the TV for their collective systems and not have the room for a crt , but I can agree a crt is of course great to use for the PS2.

I play on a moniter, will that make a difference?

there is a benefit with a progressive image it more visible on the tv , but the ps2 video out put it low natively and the progressive support on ps2 titles is very low , i can see when the level hike is the go the to

Now that I own both the PS2 TO HDMI and the LevelHike, I've sorted out a relatively good setup on the cheap. The PS2 TO HDMI is fantastic for playing PS2 games, but I'm really bad at figuring out GSM settings so I've pretty much stayed away from trying to force 480p and such as my screen always ends up a mess, no matter what values I enter on the x and y axis. Using Tekken 4 as a test - as it prompts Progressive Scan to start - the signal is so crisp and clear on Progressive. Even on basic 50/60hz modes, the image clarity is fantastic and much better than the LevelHike. Character models, versus screens and the like all pop with detail and fidelity that is just blurred away on the LevelHike. Plus, when played normally with no GSM fiddling, the resolution fits perfectly on my 4K monitor, with slim black bars on the top and bottom to prevent overscan while maintaining a solid 4:3 ratio. The only problem? PS1 games. Testing Tomb Raider and Silent Hill resulted in a horribly squished output that rendered the games unplayable. Also, Silent Hill suffered from the resolution switching black screen/signal drop, something which WILL get you killed and ruin the game. On an older TV, I could fix this through GSM, but that workaround doesn't work on my new monitor. The LevelHike is exclusively used for my PS1. As it can only do RGB, the LevelHike just cannot compare to the PS2 TO HDMI. It's an acceptable image, but it lacks any fidelity or detail, plus it locks you out of any progressive modes. The difference on Tekken 4 was night and day. For my PS1 however - it's perfect. It keeps everything in the correct resolution (despite slight overscan on the top and bottom of the image, but nothing that hurts any game I tested) and the quality is very good for an RGB output. Dithering is captured well and, when testing on a texture intensive game like WWF SmackDown! 2, everything looked great. Sadly, the Silent Hill resolution switching still messes this cable up, so I currently have no safe way of playing SH without drops (I have a PS3, but the game is glitched on there). So yes, in conclusion, I use the PS2 TO HDMI for my PS2 and the LevelHike for my PS1. Both adapter plays to the strengths of one console over another, so I've incorporated them into my setup accordingly!

Can I suggest something that I think will improve your video? As was great overall but was kinda annoying to watch due to some Nick bits. You should write a script with what you’re going to say and re-record the bits that need redoing. There’s so many times where you say the wrong word or mumble way too much, just kinda irritating as doesn’t seem polished like a final version video should feel like.
