Cheap Ebay 18650 Li-ion batteries (test and autopsy)

Ғылым және технология

Today I tested another 2 dirt cheap 18650 size Li-ion cells from Ebay, donated to me by a viewer (thanks!!!). This test includes capacity measurement using my DIY battery analyzer and, of course, an autopsy. Can those super cheap batteries be real, or just another fakes?
List of all 18650 Li-ion cells I've tested:

In my favourite top3 You Tubers. (Esp. after looking at his clocks and his cat) - and with so much that made me laugh. DiodeGW is certainly a force among the best of the electronic engineers here on YT. Make no mistake - he has an excellent foundation of knowledge and experience that he shares with great style, quality and humor. Brilliant. I have written a few praising comments recently. I think the effort and time involved and the generosity of the content makers in bringing this new form of media to life, is quite a remarkable thing - thanks to people like DiodeGW. Respect from Martin, a fellow engineer.

The problem with unknown "recycled" cell is that you don't know what happened before. Often they were overdischarged, meaning they've build copper shunt inside the cell leading to internal short circuit and explosion. I discovered this, the hard way. Some of them also don't hold full charge for long and they definitely have much less capacity than before.

Good video. I'm starting to dabble in solar and battery tech as a hobby. Will build some battery bundles from lithium cells. Knowing how to spot fakes and used batteries is key. The price variance is huge. As such, a cheap, low capacity, but solid cell might be more economical, maybe? Will do some math after taking some samples. I bought a programmable load that will measure a battery's capacity automatically. Thanks.

The liquid in the battery is the electrolyte. It is needed for the battery to work. It doesn't need to flow out like in the green battery, but the whole system must feel moist. The low performance of the yellow battery is most likely (partly?) due to loss of electrolyte. If you rapidly charge or discharge the battery, it gets hot, which increases the pressure in the cell, and some electrolyte might vent off through the safety pressure release in the positive contact. Also the seal can go bad over time, causing electrolyte to diffuse out even if there is no overpressure in the cell.

Actually, En means Energy :). The next screen after voltage measurenemt is energy measurement (energy in watthours). When I long press the mode button to activate the discharge, the meter prepares to show the energy value, but then it realizes that a long press of the button is what happened, and it goes back to voltage display. But En could also mean something like "discharge Enabled", so I left the program this way :).

The rolls may be hand-rolled by poorly paid starving workers in China. Then it, of course, needs more electrolyte. The layers are not pressed together enough. There's also a lot of empty space, so the roll can loosen over time or because of the shipping vibrations.

So the reason why the 1800mAh one was so poor (1100mAh) was because it was specifically made/designed to be low capacity, there was not enough material inside to be of decent quality or capacity. The inside was hollow... And the reason why the 2400mAh battery performed so badly was because it was a recycled cell, probably from e-waste, where they take the battery pack, disassemble it for the 18650s, and then they just re-wrap it, shove new contacts on, and sell it to you. Under those circumstances it really is pot luck as to what capacity you will get (the previous UltraFire recycled cell was 1500mAh).

Práve rozoberám baterky z HP notebookov a už mám vyše 100 článkov Samsung ICR 18650-28A. V praxi ich chcem nabíjať do 4,2 V a vybíjať do 3,0 V. To by mi mohlo dať kapacitu okolo 2300 mAh.

Ak uvidím že jeden z desiatich modulov stráca napätie rýchlejšie, môžem ho otvoriť a skontrolovať jednotlivé články, nájsť problémový a ten vymeniť. Celá batéria je bez zvárania alebo letovania, čo je super konštrukcia.

The spot welding marks are probably not that easy to hide. They could sand a hole through it :). Sanding would also make a noticeable pattern. Putting a piece of metal over it is probably faster and more simple. They always do things the fastest, simplest and cheapest way ;).

You missed to measure the length and the surface of this piecees of 'copperpaper'. Also their individuell weights would have been interesting. Maybe you should consider to repeat this test in some future. Maybe we find out even more and new things today. And they say, that lots of different prescious metalls are in this copperblend. Maybe it's as well possible to measure and calculate the specific weight. We know the surface, so we only have to measure the thickness as well properly. Maybe it would be of some interest anyway to know the thickness of all such samples, they may not all be the same?

The realistic capacity rating makes those fakes and recycled cells harder to identify, unfortunately. They should stick to 9900mAh ratigns :D.

I am currently sticking with Molicel for the foreseeable future, the P26A and P28A are amazing for the price. 2600-2800 mah and high discharge ratings too. About $6 online too and grade A un used fresh cells always.
