Cheap Easy Deer Fence For Garden that WORKS (3D Deer Fence, NOT Fishing Line)

Don't waste your time on a fishing line deer fence like we did. Deer walked right through like it wasn't there and ate our garden up. We installed another cheap deer fence option, the 3D Deer Fence, and it's worked perfectly.

We have also tried a Fishing line fence to protect our urban garden.... Deer are hoofed footed Squirrels! The simply stuck their heads through, then walked until the lower wire brushed their chests and stepped through. You have to remember that deer are experts at navigating very thick woods and thickets and if motivated enough by food they can find a way through almost anything.

I put up a 3-d electric deer fence very similar to yours 3 years ago and It works 100% keeping the deer out of my Northern Wisconsin garden. Mine is about 300' x 250" square. The only thing that has managed to get in the garden besides rabbits and such was a bear last July. Easy to construct, cheap, and easy to change around if need be. Wish I could post a picture.

The chipmunks, squirrels, rodents, possums, rabbits, raccoons, along with the deer that hop my neighbor's 4 ft fence into my yard routimely will not be able to get to my container garden to be placed on tarps in the new fenced area. I will finally regain my backyard.

I use this method when planting fruit trees. The line does not have to be electrified. The deer get confused when they hit that first line. Don't laugh but I actually encouraged deer to come in to eat apples from a couple of mature apple trees.

I decided last year that it was cheaper to grow a sacrificial food plot for deer to attract them and feed them far away from where the garden is, than to try to fence my large garden. It worked really well... For the deer! Instead, my sweet corn was decimated by raccoons, who weren't so thrilled with the cheap field corn that the deer enjoyed 😂 This year, I'm building an electric fence!

FYI based on my own research for this design--it seems recommended to get a fence charger (technically they say above 1J) output but at least close to that. I have no hands-on experience but if you're finding success with a 0.15J output charger that's very exciting. I found one for $160 with 0.8J output.

Thanks for your note! Personally, I wouldn't risk it for the $110 or so for the charger. Too many hours invested to put it to chance. You could always have it 'ready to go' and at the first sign of intrusion, you could electrify it if need be. If you do try it, let us know if it works for you!

Thanks for posting this excellent video! We recently moved from the city the countryside here in central Ohio and the first thing we did was build a large vegetable garden. We are currently using the 3D fence design in your video with non-electrofied white nylon cord. So far, it's been working but we have decided to upgrade to electrofied conductors for added safety. We live on the edge of a nature preserve and have lots of deer crossing our property day and night. Our question is: Have you made any 'refinements' to your design since posting this video 2 years ago? For instance, do you still recommend the same hight and spacing? We also have a big rabbit population but so far the 24" chickenwire pinned at the bottom with sod stakes has been keeping them out. Thanks Again, Bill and Monica

  • @dooleyhomestead

Thanks for your comment and question! We ran it as three separate strands, then ran a 'jumper' strand from the charge box to the outside line, then from the bottom line to the top line. As long as the strands are touching each other and have continuity they will work. You can see how we connected the three wires to the charger around 0:55 We also used three more short sections for the 'gate' so that we weren't pulling or worrying about the long wire. If you want to use them year after year (if you take them down for tilling or another reason), I recommend rolling them on an old paper towel roll or similar spool. They get tangled very easily. Best of luck!

  • @dooleyhomestead

    @dooleyhomestead

    3 жыл бұрын

For Rabbits, you probably want to go at least a couple of feet for raised beds. If you have other creatures, like raccoons, you may consider adding fencing - as they can crawl up almost anything. I would consider adding 2-foot tall chicken-wire (or similar) around the inner fence. That way, a raccoon would have to crawl over it (and get shocked at the ~24inch inside line), and 2-feet of protection is usually enough to deter rabbits.

  • @dooleyhomestead

We usually don't have mice unless we have a tarp or some sort of cover in the garden. It's also far enough away from a hiding spot that groundhogs aren't an issue. For groundhogs, I would consider adding 2-foot tall chicken wire (or similar) around the inner fence - close to the electric line so that even a climber would get zapped trying to enter.

Fishing line is best used as a property encirclement.. Small galvanized ring anchor hooks set in your woodline trees at many heights .. Few inches off ground up to 8 or so feet .. Not exactly a fence but its a concept that works when scaled up.. In other words two or three spans of line is waste of time.. If you span intervals of 4 ta 6 inch heights from ground up to 10 feet using heavier line.. It becomes a functional barrier thats cheap... considering you can encircle an acre size area with a few rolls of fishing line and box of ring anchor hooks.. Where that same actual sized fence would be thousands of dollars

Setting up one of these myself. In terms of connecting the electric wire to the charger, is it as simple as wrapping the hot wire around the terminal and the setting some ground stakes? Do you run separate hot wires to each line on the fence or is it all one big wire?

It's the only thing that worked for us! Some people complain about smaller animals that we never had a problem with. Racoons, mainly. You may consider adding one more lower strand on the inside line if you think that could be a problem. We have racoons around but they didn't bother our garden. I believe it's due to an abundance of other tasty foods in our area.

Deer do not have binocular vision (like most prey animals) and therefore are not capable of seeing depth....but it is very hard to sneak up on them. The way a deer’s eyes are positioned on its head is part of this. This animal has a 310 degree field of view, with only 50 degrees of blind spot. Compare that to humans, who have three times as big a blind spot. Try this: Powered with 12v or 120v ac. 2 joules. About $70. Hi, I modeled my fence from this video and used a Gallagher S20 charger, 12 miles, .20 stored joules(similar to yours). I have 4 lines, totaling about 1,200 ft.(u shaped design) I'm only getting 2500 volts directly after where I have it clamped to the polywire on the outside line and less than 1,000 on the inner top 2 lines at furthest point. I can touch 1,500 volts without feeling a jolt. 2,500 is a slight jolt. Have you measured your voltage? I'm wondering if my charger is underpowered, but I don't think it should be. I used the same grounding rod and drove down to about 6" exposed, not a dry area. The only thing I can think of is the unit came with alligator clamps and maybe the connection isn't what it is supposed to be...although Gallagher is a well established and I don't think they would provide inadequate supplies. Anyway, I'm curious what your voltage is.

How do you control smaller animals such as rabbits

Good question! I would consider adding 2-ft-tall chicken wire (or similar) around the inner fence. 2-feet of protection is usually enough to deter rabbits.

I would consider adding 2-foot tall chicken-wire (or similar) around the inner fence. That way, a gopher would have to crawl over it (and get shocked at the ~24inch inside line), and 2-feet of protection is usually enough to deter rabbits.

How does someone think a deer moving at 40 mile per hour would respect fishing line ???? Its like a spider web to a deer ! Where did these people grow up anyway ????? Furthermore... where do these people think an electric fence is going to stop or even slow a deer ????? Build a common woven wire fence about 9 feet tall..... much better results !

It needs to be electrified. You'll have deer test it. Leave one gate wire down or have one of those corner posts arcing to ground and they eat your garden. They're like those velociraptors in Jurrasic Park. They'll test your fence. They love filbert, apple, blueberry etc.
