Deer In Our Garden - Fishing Line vs. Welded Wire
Deer have been ravaging our summer garden, so we tried a few things to keep them out. First, 30lb test fishing line, 8 feet up, every 6 inches for the first 4 feet, then every foot above that. After that, 6 ft tall welded wire with the top two strands of fishing line still up at 7 and 8 feet up.

I find that effective repellents/deterrents are 1) row or bed covers if feasible; also place unstable objects around your plants as deer don't like walk on such. 2) strong scented perennial plants such as fast growing mints, lavenders, sages, etc. sprinkled throughout the garden. 3) time. Animals are creatures of habit. They tend to follow and repeat what works. As they learn that your space is undesirable, they will stop, and teach their young the lesson.
I have never tried fishing line for deer. I know for a fact that it works for birds. I had a horrible problem with bluebirds and crows eating my bean sprouts, entire rows 40+ plants gone. Dug up as soon as they start to peek out. Connect each pole to each other pole at the top with fishing line creating a web over the top of the entire garden. At just the right angle it glistened in the setting sun. Like lazers protecting a bank vault in the movies, a 3D aerobatic maze. It was a sight to behold. For a few years the garden was a no fly zone. The major problem with fishing line is durability (turkeys are bigger than bluebirds), winter/snow (maybe the contraction in cold or the snow load, I don't know, it actually snapped most of the 1.5 X 1.5 inch wooden poles we where using). And don't forget about cleanup, that almost invisible broken line WILL get tangled in the lawn mower. I have some more ideas for version 3.
I have found that the best deer deterrent is a Winchester, even if you are not too skilled with your Winchester it sure makes a point like no other deer deterrent and the bigger the better, Remington will also work. Lead poisoning is a terrible thing. Since I live near others, I use only chicken wire, barb wire, and my latest fishing line fence, and I have no landscaping left and will not reinvest in that again! The deer love my cucumber leaves, and Iam not too happy about that ether.
You can't keep them from jumping over you need to make them not want to . If they can't land without getting injured they won't jump as a broken leg means they will be eaten alive. So make it difficult to land.
I hate Deer with all my heart. 🤣🤣 I have been fighting these guys for 6 years and I gave up.
I pin down my fences with garden staples because the little terrors will go under fences in a heartbeat to gain entry... I like the 3-D fence with heavy twine that causes them to be unable to get to the fence like they did before - about 2 to 3 feet from the garden fence - Just this simple addition put the incursions to an end... I put my fence up with bamboo risers on the t-posts up to 9 feet and that put a stop to the insanity as well - They simply cannot make the jump...
I appreciate this so much! I recently moved to a house where deer love the yard. I've been gardening since childhood but never had deer issues. It was discouraging to see them chomp tomatoes and pumpkins, which I have found on "deer resistant" lists. I'm planning a Tsun Tsu approach before I even till the ground - it's an all-fronts war against these grifters!
Just go to your local farm store and get a few cattle fence panels, they come in various lengths and strengths. They will be able to advise you on what to get, you can also string barb wire or electric strains along the stop if you want to keep them from jumping over…
Olaf seems to be doing better? And he picked up the scent of that deer that came through an hour prior to your watering!
The fishing line didn't work for me either.
I used fishing line criss crossed across my back yard. it let me know where the pest traffic, both deer and human, were going though. it didn't stop them, but I could see where they snapped the line, what their preferred paths were.
Visual blocking works too, with a breathable lawn fabric. They won't try to eat what they can't see.
Thanks for making the video. It's been 3 years since you've put up what looks like 6 foot welded wire and it looks like you kept the fishing line in place above that. In all that time, have ANY deer made their way back into your garden? Thanks.
I like the song will you guys put up the chicken wire you should use it more.😁
How’s it all working out so far? Looking at possibly doing the same thing.
What's the minimum distance between posts? T-posts have got really expensive thanks to inflation.
New dog doesn’t chase the deer away? Dock his pay!
tried electric fence up to 6 strands 6 ft high, then electronic barking dogs, then motion activated sprinklers. One night a deer was standing out there inside the electric fence, dog barking taking a shower. That was my limit so I ate him. Working on an eight foot fence now. Anyone know where I casn get land mines if that don't work.
6 ' fence isn't high enough it takes an 8 footer
