just switched to pine pellets that I got for $6 for a 40 lb bag from tractor supply. it's been one day and so far I love it. our cat is 2 years old and has big poop and pee, I didn't smell the pee when I sifted through the litter today. the poop stayed on top because he didn't cover it, but once you get the poop out...there's no smell. this is an affordable hidden hack for all cat owners. oh yes, and I'm pregnant so believe me when I say I don't smell cat pee anymore.

“Deep battered their back feet” so relatable! My big boy (we think he’s part Norwegian forest cat so he’s big with furry feet) got sick and I needed to give him his own box and space for awhile. Got clumping litter (I usually use the hard clay reusable pellets) and it was a mess! It gets EVERYWHERE even my roomba couldn’t keep up running every day. Just switched over to pine and wow what a difference from the clay pellets I had before. The pine has kept away the pee smell so well so far! With 3 male cats in the house, that’s a feat. I got the arm & hammer sifting box. You just lift the sifting pan up and inch and shake the box so the sawdust falls through. Repeat as necessary. Dump the sawdust when it gets full and keep topping off.

My hubby got a 9 US gallon mortar mixing tab from Lowe's (it cost only $7 plus tax). They are big, stirdy and work great! Excited to see how this compares to the paper pellets. I didn't like Yesterday's News as it seemed to have no odor control whatsoever, like it smelled *bad* almost immediately. I had been using a small animal paper crumble bedding called Fresh World (tried some other brands to no avail) that actually seemed to work for a little bit. Not the 14 days it promised, but eh, cats are a lot bigger than ferrets. Then Exquisicat started to package what seems to be, from all appearances and function, exactly the same thing in a bigger, cheaper bag for cats. Odor control still wasn't great, so I switched over to their paper pellets since it's better than Yesterday's News and easier to tell when they're soggy as compared to crumbles. Most of the paper pellets won't sift through a sifting box, though. Like, they smell terrible before they actually break down to be sifted. This is a pretty longwinded comment, but I can relate to everyone's litter troubles. I stopped using clay litter when I lived in a household with, at its height, 7 cats, 3 of which stayed in my room 24/7, using 2 boxes (I couldn't fit a third). Clay litter was always everywhere in the house, and my parents wouldn't clean it up, so it was just... horrid. Paper stuff was at least easier to contain. But if this will actually break down and sift before it smells gross, it's an absolute win. Grabbed a bag of Exquisicat brand pellets for now, but will definitely go after some kiln fired horse pellets if it works and my cat doesn't mind it.

Yep, this is what I use for my 5 cats, and it is amazing how there is no urine odor, as long as you clean the boxes frequently, which is what I do, and refresh with new pellets. It is the most affordable cat 'litter' I've ever used, at just $6 a sack, which lasts a couple of months. I have 5 cats and 4 litter boxes. I don't like to leave the urine-sawdust in there, even if it dries out for the most part, I like to remove it daily, so I have a scoop to remove the wetter looking sawdust, then add a handful of new pellets. This way the litter boxes stay really clean.

Tried to switch to pine pellets because one of my cats has asthma, but neither one likes the wood pellets. Both of them who are 6 years old, are use to either crystals, or clay litter (both have a significant amount of dust). But neither one wanted to use wood pellets even though I took it real slow in introducing the wood pellets. I mixed it slow with their existing litter, but any attempt to go 100% pellets were greeted with them finding other places to pee. They started using a closet that door was slight ajar, and would go into it at night and pee all over the plastic bags that I had stored in there. Took me several days to figure out what they were doing and I had a big smelly mess to pick up. Wish I could have made the change.

Perla Medina you’re thinking of the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. So long as your cat is indoor only and not ill, there’s not really any issue for water treatment. The bigger concern is doing this when there’s clumping litter stuck to the feces, as it hardens into cement in your pipes and can become a very expensive fix later on.

The demo in the video I’ve linked starts at 5 minutes, 13 seconds. 1) Get the poop out 2) Dump one litter box into the other (so you have an empty box to put the sifted whole pellets into) / Or if you only have one litter box, have a second container you can put the sifted pellets in as you go 3) Dump a little at a time into the sifter/bucket straight from the litter box 4) Dump the whole pellets from the sifter into the empty litter box 5) When you’re finished, divvy the remaining whole pellets between the two boxes and add a little more to fill the bottom to about 1.5-2 inches 6) Either dump the bucket into the trash or outside or just put the lid on and keeping filling it until you need to dump it. Wash the bucket as needed. And the beauty of the sawdust is you can put the poop in there too and cover it with the sawdust as you’re sifting and between that and it having a lid, you won’t smell it 😁 Of all the ways I’ve seen people do it, this is the best (in my opinion), especially if you already have litter boxes. Most sifting litter boxes are designed for clay litter, not pine pellets. And any that ARE designed for pine pellets are like $50+. This sifter is only $15 on Amazon (get the 1/8” mesh) and it’s really good quality so it’ll last a long time. And a five gallon bucket with a lid is like $3. debra parker i have a 9 month old maine coon and he’s already about 13 lbs and bigger in size than most other cats. you have to be prepared for the behaviors of a kitten in a large cat body which can be stressful. try to get any bad behaviors beat before they get around 6 months as it’ll be easier to control them then. my boy was a rescue community cat for his first few months so he’s still trying to learn how to interact with humans so i have a steep curve but it should be a bit easier if you aren’t rescuing.

I've had my I have a MaineCoon Kitty from the moment he was born, watched his birth. He's now an 8 year old and 25 pounds :) I also have four other kitties; three American Shorthairs and one Bombay. My MC is very docile unless one of the three pick on his Bombay, at which point he is vocal and shields her...lol.. he also has to bath her every night before we go to bed. As a kitten, she was NOT happy about that but now she's four and deals with affectionate cleaning..lol..MC's have a very distinctive meow, and mine will meow when he wants attention. What I will caution you about is picking them up, they are big and heavy... if you pick them up as you would a ten pound kitty you can hurt them - be sure to pick them up with your arms to give them some security under their front and back part of their body.... mine is too big to sit on my lap, its uncomfortable for him but he likes snuggling on the couch or if I'm sitting in a wooden chair at the computer, I'll place another one next to me so he too can enjoy himself... while the other kitties take turns sitting in my lap... hope this helps :)

A few people are saying that only kiln dried pine is safe. Does anyone know if most pine is heat treated? A local company that makes table legs gives away their pine shavings. It is fine, soft and doesn't have added chemicals. Is this safe to use? I've mixed in a small amount to my cat's clay litter over a few weeks and she doesn't have any negative reactions.

It's working out for me since seeing these videos. One of my 3 house cats poops next to the box in the bathroom but that's the only issue I have with it, and it's something I decided to deal with. I thought of using clumping litter in the bathroom box alone but was afraid the cats would favor that box and ignore the other 3 boxes with pine pellets in them. I love the clean, pine smell of using this. No more ammonia odor, much less dust, and no more stepping on sharp pieces of clay litter or clumping litter on the bathroom floor when I get up to pee in the night. I sift out the peed on sawdust 2x a day using a colander I bought at Dollar Tree for $1. But what do you do with the sawdust? I own a 1/3 acre lot.

They're great, but not meant to be used "raw." Watch the horse stall videos. You're supposed to pour water on them, and they puff into dry, fluffy, super absorbent shavings. Don't make your cat jump on gravelly rocks or sit on them to pee! These pellets are compressed at 700F, so are extremely dry and need water. Pour about 2 quarts water on a 40 lb bag, and watch them puff into 3 times the volume. You have to keep pulling them up from the bottom, though, as they really suck moisture down. Using them raw is a huge waste of wood.

@@DiyRick66 So have any of your cats passed away particularly young or had any suspicious illnesses over your 18 years using the pellets? Guessing not or you'd have stopped using them? I've been using my bag for about 5 days and I'm already in love and forever grateful that I found out about it. Buying supermarket litter for 3 cats is just horrendously expensive and messy/smelly to boot. There are literally no pros to using that overpriced crap. The pellets clean so nicely and the dust doesn't even smell bad! Just a nice, consistent woody smell. So of course I'm praying not to just find out its dangerous. Then again, like you said, is the supermarket stuff really any better? For a while we were trialing the most expensive litter they offered which was corn litter. Turned out even that could become toxic if left wet too long.

I tried the pine but I find it extremely dusty and I have to wear a mask. But when I take the mask off I tell the dust is still in the air and I keep thinking that all that dust cannot be healthy for the lungs of humans and animals alike. I do have to say it's good for odor tho..

I've been using pine pellets for years. Love it! Smells better, cheaper. A bit dusty though after kitties have used it. Then I found this vid that shows how to use a screen so that the used sawdust falls through, kzread.info/dash/bejne/enucs8VmcpbLpbA.html.
