I bought some harbor freight palm gouges for super cheap but had to completely fix them for them to actually work. Then I found a detail gouge set from woodcrafts wood river brand for only $35 and they were amazing right out the box. For carving knives I recommend beaver craft sets. They run about the price of one flex cut knife and are pretty decent quality. Other KZreadrs I've shared this with and that have reviewed them are very impressed with the cost per quality of the brand.

Thank you for your comments. Yes I’ve looked at Harbor Freight’s carving tools too and seems to be the same issues with all cheap tools. You really have to rework them to make them usable and that takes some time, skill and proper sharpening equipment. Even expensive quality tools that come super sharp out of the package get dull and eventually will need resharpening. Professional quality tools usually don’t need to be reworked, they hold an edge better and feel well balanced in the hand. Happy carving!
